49ers Sign Dazz Newsome, Tay Martin To Futures Deals
The San Francisco 49ers signed wide receivers Dazz Newsome and Tay Martin, defensive lineman Alex Barrett, offensive linemen Alfredo Gutierrez, Keith Ismael, Jason Poe and Leroy Watson, safety Tayler Hawkins, defensive back Qwuantrezz Knight and linebacker Curtis Robinson to Reserve/Futures deals on Tuesday. Newsome, 23, joined the team's practice squad in November after he was taken by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round in 2021. He was not active at all for San Fran in 2022 after playing in three games for the Bears in his rookie season. Martin, 25, was active in Week 8 and Week 17 but played only one offensive snap for the 49ers in 2022.
Free-agent wide receiver Dazz Newsome had a workout with the Tennessee Titans on Friday. The former sixth-round pick wasn't able to make much noise last season. He suffered a broken collarbone and ended up only playing in three games for the Chicago Bears. The 23-year-old does have some potential, so it wouldn't be shocking to see some team give him a shot. Newsome is likely to be buried on the depth chart or end up on the practice squad, assuming he lands a spot on an NFL roster. He's not expected to have fantasy value right away, but could be an interesting development project for a team.
Chicago Bears wide receiver Dazz Newsome was waived by the team on Tuesday. The sixth-round rookie not making the Week 1 roster is a surprise despite reports that the team will try and sign him to the practice roster. Newsome enjoyed a solid offseason but broke his collarbone at the end of mini-camp and was behind schedule during training camp. Newsome must clear waivers before the Bears can bring him back and questions remain on the Bears special teams as to who will be returning punts against the Rams on September 12.
Chicago Bears wide receiver Dazz Newsome fielded punts and caught one pass for seven yards in the team's preseason loss to the Bills. The 2021 sixth-round pick made his professional debut and handled punt return duties. Newsome missed the start of training camp after breaking his collarbone during the team's offseason training program. He may be behind in the playbook, but his speed on the field should certainly help him catch up quickly. Newsome may not have an immediate impact but should see some early season chances to make some plays for the Bears.
Chicago Bears wide receiver Dazz Newsome struggled in Thursday's practice session with the team. Newsome committed some costly drops in 11-on-11 drills and has struggled to make an impact in camp. The rookie is behind schedule after breaking his collarbone during the team's offseason program and missed the first portion of training camp. Newsome was drafted to bring more explosion to the Bears wide receivers room but will need to clean up the details before he can get that chance. Newsome may also see some looks on special teams this Saturday in the Bears second preseason game against the Bills.
Chicago Bears wide receiver Dazz Newsome was removed from the team's PUP list and was limited in practice on Monday. The 221st overall pick in this year's NFL draft broke his collarbone during rookie minicamp and thus far has missed four practices of training camp. These first practices can be crucial for rookie's to make a name for themselves in hopes of playing a role during the regular season. Newsome flashes downfield speed that brings a different element to a Bears offense that struggled last season. The more likely scenario could be Newsome carving out a role for himself on special teams first before getting any real game action that would garner fantasy attention.
With the 221st pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears have selected North Carolina wide receiver Dazz Newsome. A 1,000 yard receiver in 2019, Newsome has 16 receiving touchdowns over the past two seasons. He's undersized, but has appeal as a slot project at the next level. Chicago could use some help at receiver, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Newsome's contributions this season mainly come on special teams.
