Free-agent defensive end Derek Wolfe has officially announced his retirement from professional football after 10 successful years in the league. Wolfe was originally the 36th overall pick by the Denver Broncos in the 2012 draft out of the University of Cincinnati, and he recorded 40 tackles (nine for loss) and six sacks in his rookie season. In his eight seasons in Denver, Wolfe was a key player along their defensive line during their stretch of Super Bowl contention. He won Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers and was part of one of the best defenses of all time during that season. The 32-year-old never appeared in fewer than 11 games, but he battled injuries towards the end of his Broncos tenure and was on Injured Reserve in 2017 and 2019.
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said the team released defensive end Derek Wolfe (hip) with an injury settlement on Tuesday. Wolfe had another hip surgery on Monday after previously going under the knife in January for an injury that he initially suffered in August of last year. The 32-year-old veteran pass-rusher missed the entire 2021 season as a result. It's unlikely that Wolfe will have a shot to sign with another organization until he can prove he's past the hip injury. In his one and only season in Baltimore, Wolfe had 51 tackles (19 solo), one sack, six tackles for loss, four QB hits and a fumble recovery in 14 games (eight starts) in 2020. The former second-rounder out of Cincinnati in 2012 spent the first eight years of his career with the Denver Broncos.
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said that defensive end Derek Wolfe (back, hip) will not return to play in 2021. The Ravens opened Wolfe's 21-day practice window to return from Injured Reserve late last month, but apparently the 31-year-old pass-rusher just hasn't made any progress and won't play at all in his second season with Baltimore. Wolfe was placed on IR before the team's Week 3 game. He becomes the sixth starter for the Ravens to suffer a season-ending injury in 2021, joining cornerback Marcus Peters, offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley, running backs J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards and safety DeShon Elliott. Justin Madubuike has stepped into a starting role with Wolfe out and has 16 tackles and one sack on the season.
Derek Wolfe Designated To Return From Injured Reserve
The Baltimore Ravens opened up the 21-day practice window for defensive end Derek Wolfe (back) to return from Injured Reserve on Tuesday. Wolfe will be back at practice on Tuesday and has been on IR the first seven weeks of the season. The Ravens are on their bye in Week 8, but it's possible that the 31-year-old pass-rusher could return in Week 9 against the Minnesota Vikings at home. Wolfe had a successful eight-year run with the Denver Broncos before joining Baltimore's D in 2020, when he had 51 tackles (19 solo), four QB hits, one fumble recovery and one sack in 14 games (eight starts). He's never been much of an IDP asset with a career-high of seven sacks in his final year in Denver in 2019, but his return would be a nice boost to the Ravens pass rush.
The Baltimore Ravens have ruled out defensive end Derek Wolfe (back, hip) ahead of Monday night's season opener against the Raiders. Wolfe did not practice on Thursday or Friday, so this decision from the team is not much of a surprise. Through 14 games last season, Wolfe racked up one sack, one fumble recovery, and 51 tackles (including six for loss). Broderick Washington Jr. is expected to start in place of the 31-year-old.
Baltimore Ravens defensive end Derek Wolfe won't practice this week after recently dealing with a bout of pneumonia, according to head coach John Harbaugh. Wolfe also skipped voluntary workouts recently after signing a three-year, $12 million contract extension in March. In his first season with Baltimore after eight seasons with the Denver Broncos to begin his career, Wolfe recorded 51 tackles (six for loss), four QB hits, one fumble recovery and a career-low one sack in 14 games (eight starts) in 2020. The 31-year-old should be fine for training camp last week and will be looking to bounce back in the trenches in his second year with the Ravens. Wolfe should start alongside Calais Campbell on the interior, but he's not a realistic IDP target as more of a run-stopper than pass-rusher.
The Baltimore Ravens re-signed pass-rusher Derek Wolfe to a three-year, $12 million contract extension, according to a source. Wolfe will earn $6.5 million in 2021. The team also re-signed linebacker Tyus Bowser to a four-year, $22 million contract. Bowser's deal could be worth up to $27 million with $12 million in guarantees. The additions are key after Baltimore lost both Matt Judon and Yannick Ngakoue in free agency. The 31-year-old Wolfe played 58 percent of the defensive snaps last year and has 350 career tackles, 34 sacks, 81 QB hits and 17 pass breakups. A second-round pick in 2017, Bowser has emerged as the team's best coverage linebacker after he had three interceptions and five pass breakups and a career-high 34 tackles in 2020.
The Baltimore Ravens agreed to a one-year, $3 million fully guaranteed deal with defensive end Derek Wolfe on Saturday. Wolfe can earn $3 million more in incentives. He chose Baltimore over the Texans. One of the strongest defenses in the league gets even stronger on their defensive line with the Wolfe signing. The 30-year-old was a second-round pick of the Broncos in 2012. Despite playing in just 12 games due to injury in 2019, he racked up a career-high seven sacks while recording 34 tackles (23 solo), eight tackles for loss, 12 QB hits and one forced fumble. Wolfe can be effective in doses for Baltimore, but he isn't all that attractive in IDP leagues, especially at his age.
Denver Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe (elbow) is being placed on season-ending Injured Reserve on Monday after dislocating his elbow in the Week 13 win over the Chargers, according to a source. Wolfe finished with a career-high seven sacks in the final year of his contract with Denver, and he's unlikely to be back with the Broncos next year. With Von Miller (knee) also ailing and missing Week 13, Denver's pass rush could be in a real bad spot in Week 14 on the road against the surging Texans. You'll obviously want to avoid their defense for that matchup.
Denver Broncos defensive tackle Derek Wolfe (elbow) set a new career high in sacks with seven in the Week 13 victory over the Chargers, but he also suffered a dislocated left elbow in the fourth quarter and didn't return. He had a brace on his arm after the game, and trainers were able to pop his arm back into place. If nothing is torn, it will be a couple of weeks (before playing), Wolfe said. If anything is torn, Im (bleeped) and looking at a ruined (bleeping) offseason. Losing Wolfe for any stretch of time will be a loss to Denver's run-stopping abilities and pass rush. You will certainly want to avoid the Denver D in Week 14 on the road against the Texans.
