The New Orleans Saints are expected to sign veteran cornerback Desmond Trufant after they worked him out on Monday, according to a source. Trufant suffered a groin injury early in training camp with the Chicago Bears and was released last week. The 30-year-old also took some time away from football after the death of his father. Trufant still has talent, but injuries have caused him to miss 17 of 32 games over the last two seasons. At the very least, he'll provide the New Orleans secondary with plenty of experience and depth to begin the 2021 regular season. The Saints defense as a whole should be considered a low-end starting unit early on, but we'd recommend using a different defense in Week 1 when they face the Green Bay Packers.
Former Detroit Lions cornerback Desmond Trufant is signing an undisclosed one-year deal with the Chicago Bears on Friday, according to a source. The Lions released Trufant at the beginning of March after he struggled through injuries the last two seasons. His addition will help offset the loss of Pro Bowl cornerback Kyle Fuller, whose official release should go through on Friday. The 30-year-old played in just 15 games the last two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and Lions, recording 29 solo tackles (two for loss), five interceptions, 11 passes defensed and one sack. He played in just six games for Detroit in his lone season in 2020. The 2015 Pro Bowler will provide a veteran presence in Chicago's secondary if he can stay on the field.
The Detroit Lions informed starting cornerback Desmond Trufant that he will be released at the start of the new league year on March 17, according to a source. Detroit signed the former first-round pick last year to try and replace Darius Slay, who was traded to the Eagles. But Trufant wound up playing in just six games and had one interception, four passes defensed and one sack on 20 tackles. He was one of the better cornerbacks in the league in his early days with Atlanta, but Trufant has missed a total of 17 games due to injuries in the last two seasons. The 30-year-old was due a base salary of $9.5 million in 2021, with $3.5 million guaranteed. Cutting him will save the Lions $6.187 million on the salary cap with $6 million in dead money.
Desmond Trufant, Danny Shelton Placed On Injured Reserve
The Detroit Lions placed cornerback Desmond Trufant (hamstring) and defensive tackle Danny Shelton (knee) on Injured Reserve on Wednesday, which could potentially end their season. They'll be forced to miss at least the next three games, with only five games remaining in the 2020 season. Only Romeo Okwara played more defensive snaps this year than Shelton, so it's a big loss for Detroit's defensive line, especially in regards to run defense. Trufant previously missed five games this year with a similar injury. With rookie Jeff Okudah also dealing with an injury, the Lions are short-handed at cornerback. Rookie tight end Hunter Bryant has been activated from IR and defensive lineman Kevin Strong has been promoted to the active roster. Detroit's defense hasn't been fantasy relevant all year long and is now short-handed due to injuries. However, they could be on the streaming radar in 16-team leagues in Week 13 against a Bears offense that continues to flounder.
Lions Defense Will Have Desmond Trufant Back Sunday
Detroit Lions cornerback Desmond Trufant (hamstring) is expected back on the field for Sundays contest against New Orleans. Having been without Trufant for the past two weeks due to a hamstring ailment, Detroits defense should simultaneously get a boost from his return, while also not having to worry about covering All-Pro receiver Michael Thomas (ankle). Trufant was brought aboard this off-season from Atlanta, having become extremely familiar with quarterback Drew Brees and many of his pass-catching options. Despite that, the Lions defense holds little fantasy intrigue this week with Alvin Kamara running wild out of the backfield. A strong performance Sunday would give the team appeal for when they return in Week 6 against Jacksonville.
Detroit Lions cornerback Desmond Trufant (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. Trufant was able to get in a couple limited sessions after not participating in Wednesday's practice, though it appears he is not quite ready yet. It's a blow to a Lions' pass defense that has surrendered five passing touchdowns in two games. Cardinals wideout DeAndre Hopkins will now likely go toe-to-toe with rookie cornerback Jeff Okudah, which is a boost to Hopkins' already elite fantasy value this week.
The Detroit Lions are signing cornerback Desmond Trufant to a two-year, $21 million deal on Wednesday, according to a source. The deal contains $14 million in guarantees. Trufant is on the back end of his career and will turn 30 this September, but the former first-round pick of the Falcons in 2013 will bring a veteran presence to a Lions secondary. He was a Pro Bowler in 2015 but played in just nine games last season, tallying 18 tackles (13 solo) and four interceptions. Trufant has 13 career interceptions in 97 games played, all with Atlanta.
The Atlanta Falcons plan to release cornerback Desmond Trufant this week, according to a source. Trufant played in just nine games in 2019 and had a career-low 18 tackles (13 solo), although he did intercept four passes and have seven passes defensed in limited action. A Pro Bowler in 2015 with the Falcons, Trufant will become one of the top available free-agent cornerbacks behind Byron Jones and James Bradberry this week.
Atlanta Falcons cornerback Desmond Trufant (toe) will play in Week 11 against the Panthers after missing the last four games with turf toe. It's good news for a Falcons Defense that has pretty much been torched through the air for most of the year outside of last week's surprising win over the Saints. Trufant's return isn't good news for D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel, but the Panthers passing game could still thrive at home against this subpar defense overall. We still wouldn't recommend using the Falcons defense anywhere in fantasy leagues.
Atlanta Falcons cornerback Desmond Trufant will sit out Sunday's contest with the Vikings. This is great news for Stefon Diggs, who would have likely been covered by the league's 10th-ranked corner according to PFF, and makes Diggs a low-end WR1 this week.
