The Atlanta Falcons have officially hired former Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith as the team's new head coach. Smith helped revitalize quarterback Ryan Tannehill and the Falcons passing game over the past two years while also making the run game unstoppable with Derrick Henry. The Falcons don't have a Henry-type, but Matt Ryan could benefit greatly from Smith's guidance, as will whoever enters 2021 as the team's lead running back.
The Atlanta Falcons hired Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith as their new head coach on Friday, according to sources. Smith was the team's top choice all along, so they get their man. The 38-year-old was one of seven coaching candidates for Atlanta after the team fired Dan Quinn on Oct. 11. Smith is expected to pair with New Orleans Saints assistant general manager/vice president of player personnel, who is expect to be Atlanta's next GM. Smith spent the last 10 seasons with the Titans but stood out the last two years as the team's offensive coordinator, helping the Titans reach the playoffs the last two seasons. Tennessee was the only team in the NFL that ranked in the top five in rushing yards per game (153.5) and passer rating (107) since 2019. He'll try to help an Atlanta team that went 4-12 in 2020 and that hasn't made the playoffs the last three years. Smith should be a good fit if quarterback Matt Ryan and veteran receiver Julio Jones stick around.
The Atlanta Falcons have made an offer to Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith to become their next head coach, according to sources. Smith has been the offensive coordinator for the Titans for the last two seasons. Tennessee ranked No. 3 in the league in total yards per game (396.4) and No. 2 overall in rushing yards per game (168.1) in 2020, and they were also fourth in scoring with 30.7 points per game. Smith has held a number of positions with the Titans since 2011, including tight ends coach, offensive line assistant, offensive quality control coach and defensive quality control coach. The Falcons have also interviewed Raheem Morris, Eric Bienemy, Joe Brady, Nathaniel Hackett and Todd Bowles for their head-coaching vacancy.
The Atlanta Falcons have identified New Orleans Saints vice president/assistant general manager Terry Fontenot as the favorite to be their next general manager, according to sources. The Falcons won't finalize a deal until the Saints are out of the playoffs, but all signs point to Fontenot being their choice. Fontenot has spent 16 years with New Orleans, with the past six coming as director of pro scouting. He also interviewed for open GM jobs with the Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos. Atlanta also interviewed Colts director of college scouting Morocco Brown, Rams director of college scouting Brad Holmes, Falcons director of college scouting Anthony Robinson and former Texans GM Rick Smith.
The Atlanta Falcons had a strong interview with Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy on Monday for their head-coaching job, according to a source who was involved in the hours-long interview. Bienemy has interviewed for multiple head-coaching openings and is considered one of the top head-coaching candidates this cycle. The Falcons officials are furious about reports that the 51-year-old didn't interview well and "absolutely refute" those reports. Along with a new head coach, Atlanta is also in the process of interviewing candidates to be their next general manager. The Falcons fired head coach Dan Quinn and GM Thomas Dimitroff during the regular season. Among the new GM's biggest priorities heading into 2021 will be to determine if quarterback Matt Ryan and veteran wide receiver Julio Jones remain part of their future plans.
