Brian Robinson Plays Starter for Falcons in Preseason Opener

Atlanta Falcons running back Brian Robinson was the team's starting running back in Friday's 27-7 preseason loss to the Broncos, playing on the team's first two drives in the first quarter, recording two carries for six yards. While it wasn't a stat-stuffing performance, the former third-rounder came out of the game unscathed and solidified his status as the team's RB2 behind Bijan Robinson, who did not play in the contest. That RB2 role was filled by the now-departed Tyler Allgeier last season, but Allgeier was able to rack up 143 carries for 514 yards and eight scores last year behind Bijan. If Robinson Jr. can garner anywhere near those numbers, especially at the goal line, then he'll certainly have fantasy relevance. The 27-year-old is currently ranked as the RB48 in RotoBaller's rankings, coincidentally, right behind the aforementioned Allgeier.

Brian Robinson Jr. Back With Second-Team Offense in Camp

After Atlanta Falcons superstar running back Bijan Robinson ended his holdout and signed a three-year, $75 million contract, Brian Robinson Jr. has returned to the second team in training camp. The former Commanders and 49ers running back has totaled 3,341 yards and 22 touchdowns in 58 NFL games. Robinson Jr. is coming off the worst statistical season of his career with San Francisco, finishing with just 425 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns despite playing all 17 games. Now in Atlanta, most speculate that he'll replace Tyler Allgeier, who was the Falcons' RB1B from 2023-2025. However, Allgeier's production has been far better than Robinson Jr.'s, and it's a whole new scheme with Kevin Stefanski in town. Fantasy managers should view Robinson Jr. as a handcuff in this offense and not expect much standalone value behind Bijan.

Brian Robinson Jr. Could Hold Standalone Value in Addition to Insurance Upside

Atlanta Falcons running back Brian Robinson Jr. failed to reach 100 carries for the first time in his career in his lone season with the 49ers in 2025. With injuries hitting the team hard, four-time All-Pro Christian McCaffrey was one of the few players to stay healthy wire-to-wire, limiting Robinson's opportunities in what has long been viewed as one of fantasy's most valuable insurance roles. In signing a one-year deal with the Falcons, Robinson again finds himself as a high-value handcuff, this time to two-time Pro Bowler Bijan Robinson, who has not missed a start through his first three seasons in the league. While the incumbent Robinson has seen heavier usage year after year, there has still been enough remaining opportunity for his primary backup to see some standalone fantasy value, with Tyler Allgeier averaging 117.9 fantasy points across their three seasons together. A new coaching staff in Atlanta could ultimately prove to make any past workload splits moot, but as RotoBaller's RB46, Robinson Jr. is projected to have some flex appeal in 2026 with obvious week-winning upside should an unfortunate injury force him to take on a larger role.

Brian Robinson Jr. Still One of the Most Important Insurance Backs in the League

For Atlanta Falcons running back Brian Robinson Jr., 2025 marked the first time in his four-year career that he was able to suit up for all 17 games, but it was in a seldom-used change-of-pace role behind Christian McCaffrey in San Francisco. In one of the stranger careers in recent history, Robinson has yet to top the 205 carries of his rookie season despite playing in only 12 games that year after being shot twice during an attempted robbery and carjacking. Clearly playing at less than full strength, he has since seen better efficiency in each subsequent season, but has never been given a full workload, first ceding carries to veterans Antonio Gibson and Austin Ekeler in Washington before landing as McCaffrey's primary backup in a year when the then-29-year-old led the league in touches. In signing a one-year deal with the Falcons, he finds himself backing up another bell cow running back in Bijan Robinson, who has not missed a game in his three-year career. While the incumbent Robinson has spent enough time split out wide to allow for his previous backup, Tyler Allgeier, to regularly see the field and maintain fantasy relevance, a new coaching regime in Atlanta could turn the backfield over to him entirely. Still, for the second year in a row, Robinson Jr. comes into the season as one of the NFL's most valuable insurance backs, draftable in 2026 leagues for that reason alone, while any standalone value he's able to provide in a new home and a new system should be seen as a bonus. He is currently RotoBaller's RB47.

Brian Robinson Jr. Remains a Valuable Dynasty Handcuff Option Entering 2026

After recording 92 carries for 400 yards and two touchdowns across 17 games with the San Francisco 49ers in 2025, veteran running back Brian Robinson Jr. is entering his first season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2026. Robinson Jr. offered little standalone appeal to fantasy managers last season, as he spent the year in a backup role behind 49ers superstar Christian McCaffrey. Ironically, Robinson Jr. finds himself in a very similar situation in Atlanta behind Falcons back Bijan Robinson. There may be slightly more opportunity available to Robinson Jr. this season, as former Falcons back Tyler Allgeier collected eight touchdowns while playing alongside Bijan in 2025. Still, his greatest value to fantasy managers is as a handcuff option. Should Robinson suffer an injury, Robinson Jr. would profile as the clear lead back in Atlanta. He remains stash-worthy in dynasty formats entering 2026.

Brian Robinson Jr. a Must-Have Handcuff in Dynasty Leagues?

Running back Brian Robinson Jr. went from backing up San Francisco 49ers All-Pro RB Christian McCaffrey in 2025 to backing up All-Pro RB Bijan Robinson in Atlanta after signing a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Falcons in free agency in March. The 27-year-old former third-round selection by the Washington Commanders in 2022 out of Alabama saw a career-low workload behind CMC last year, seeing only 92 carries for 400 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and adding eight catches for 25 yards through the air through 17 regular-season games. In Atlanta, he'll have the opportunity for a much larger workload if the Falcons remain a run-heavy offensive unit under new head coach Kevin Stefanski -- backup Tyler Allgeier had 143 carries and eight touchdowns behind Bijan Robinson in 2025. B-Rob has averaged just over 4.0 yards per carry in his four-year career and is a capable all-around back as depth for the Falcons. Long-term, he doesn't have a ton of fantasy appeal in dynasty leagues, but for those who have Bijan rostered, B-Rob will be a valuable handcuff to have in 2026. He's currently ranked as the No. 58 RB at RotoBaller in dynasty/keeper formats.

Brian Robinson Jr. a Dynasty Target as Handcuff with Standalone Upside

Atlanta Falcons running back Brian Robinson Jr. represents an intriguing dynasty target this offseason. Not only is he a top handcuff running back behind Brian Robinson, but he could also have some standalone value given the Falcons' tendency to use multiple running backs. Atlanta brought in Robinson to replace Tyler Allgeier. While we don't typically think of Robinson as a big pass-catching threat, he is averaging more than 1.25 receptions per game throughout his career, and he had 36 catches across 15 games in 2023 alone. He won't necessarily steal a ton of receiving work from Bijan Robinson, who is an incredible receiver, too. However, Brian Robinson Jr.'s versatility at least gives him a chance to rotate in on a wide variety of downs, not just third. Whatever his role ends up being, it's far more appealing than last season in San Francisco, where he barely touched the ball behind Christian McCaffrey. Robinson remains a top handcuff, and he could even have some standalone RB3/flex value if he vultures some of Bijan Robinson's touches early in the season.

Brian Robinson Jr. Could Have Standalone Flex Value as High-Level Insurance Back

Atlanta Falcons running back Brian Robinson Jr. spent his 2025 season in San Francisco as the primary backup to Christian McCaffrey. While it didn't work out for Robinson's fantasy managers, NFL fans in general were fortunate to see McCaffrey play a full 17-game slate, and Robinson ended the year with career lows of 400 yards and two touchdowns on only 92 carries. He has now signed a one-year deal with Atlanta to back up another of the league's premier backs in Bijan Robinson. While the latter Robinson has not missed a start through his first three seasons in the league, his versatility has allowed for a unique opportunity to have two backs on the field at once. Twice in his career, he has lined up for more than 150 snaps at wide receiver, and his previous backup, Tyler Allgeier, averaged more than 10 touches per game across their three seasons together. The Falcons do welcome a new staff, with head coach Kevin Stefanski and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees leaving behind a Cleveland team that tended to lean heavily on one back when given the opportunity. However, neither has ever coached a player with Robinson's skillset, and they would be wise to take advantage, leading to a safe enough floor for Robinson Jr. to hold standalone value on top of being a must-roster insurance back.

Falcons to Sign Brian Robinson Jr.

The Atlanta Falcons are expected to sign former San Francisco 49ers running back Brian Robinson Jr. to an undisclosed deal, sources told Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports. Robinson has over 2,700 rushing yards, 612 receiving yards, and 22 total touchdowns in his four NFL seasons with the 49ers and Washington Commanders. The 27-year-old former third-round pick by Washington in 2022 out of Alabama had a career-low 92 rushing attempts for 400 yards and two touchdowns in 17 regular-season games in 2025 as the primary backup behind workhorse Christian McCaffrey. In his three years with the Commanders, Robinson had over 700 rushing yards each season and also totaled 15 rushing touchdowns while averaging 4.1 yards per carry. He will effectively replace Tyler Allgeier as the No. 2 in Atlanta behind Bijan Robinson, although fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to be quite as productive as Allgeier was in a No. 2 role. The Falcons are expected to give Bijan the lion's share of the backfield touches in 2026.

49ers Have Interest in Re-Signing Brian Robinson Jr.

The San Francisco 49ers have interest in re-signing running back Brian Robinson Jr., according to Vic Tafur and Matt Barrows of The Athletic. Robinson had a solid season in the Bay Area as the backup behind Christian McCaffrey in his first year with the team in 2025, even though he had a career-low 400 rushing yards and only two touchdowns on 92 carries over 17 regular-season games. In his first three NFL campaigns with the Washington Commanders, the 26-year-old former third-round pick out of Alabama had at least 733 rushing yards out of the backfield. B-Rob's best chance for a rebound in fantasy would be to sign elsewhere, but another injury to CMC would also thrust Robinson into a significant backfield role in one of the better offenses in the league if he re-signs. Robinson didn't have over 10 carries in a single game last year with McCaffrey staying healthy all year.
