Deon Jackson, Devin Asiasi Sign With Browns' Practice Squad
The Cleveland Browns signed running back Deon Jackson and tight end Devin Asiasi to their practice squad on Tuesday. Jackson was released by the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday but did not have to wait long to latch on with another team. He will now bide his time in Cleveland where he could eventually get elevated from the practice squad if the team needs an extra body at the running back position. Jackson has had some big games over his NFL career but struggled in 2023, losing two fumbles and gaining just 14 yards on 13 carries. Asiasi last appeared in a game with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022 and finished the year with two catches for five yards.
Bengals Claim Devin Asiasi Off Waivers From Patriots
The Cincinnati Bengals claimed former New England Patriots tight end Devin Asiasi off waivers on Wednesday. Asiasi was waived by the Patriots on roster cutdown day on Tuesday, but he'll resurface quickly in Cincinnati. The 25-year-old was a third-round pick in 2020 and caught just two passes on seven targets for 39 yards and a touchdown in 10 games for the Patriots in two years. He played in just one game in 2021 and wasn't targeted at all. The Bengals are also signing former Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end O.J. Howard on Wednesday, so Asiasi figures to be buried on the TE depth chart in Cincy behind Hayden Hurst, Howard, Drew Sample and Mitchell Wilcox.
The New England Patriots waived tight end Devin Asiasi (quadriceps) on Tuesday, according to a source. The Patriots also waived former third-rounder Dalton Keene on Tuesday. With both Asiasi and Keene out of the picture in New England, Matt Sokol and Jalen Wydermyer will serve as depth at the position behind starters Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith. Asiasi had just two catches on seven targets for 39 yards and a touchdown in his two seasons with the Pats, while Keene caught three of five passes for 16 yards in his only season in 2020.
New England Patriots tight end Devin Asiasi is not expected to have a significant role in the offense to begin the season. The additions of Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith have killed any momentum for Asiasi in New England. Despite that, he showed that he is capable of making plays during the preseason finale. Asiasi hauled in four receptions for 64 yards in the win over the New York Giants. A nice outing for him, but that won't change his status on the depth chart. It would take an injury to Smith or Henry for Asiasi to have a legitimate role on a weekly basis. That being said, Asiasi should remain on the radar for fantasy managers. Let's be honest, either Henry or Smith are likely going to be sidelined at some point during the regular season, so Asiasi is the next man in line for snaps. He doesn't need to be rostered right now, but managers should continue to monitor him on the waiver wire.
New England Patriots tight end Devin Asiasi is out indefinitely in training camp after testing positive for COVID-19. Since he is fully vaccinated, Asiasi can return when he produces two negative tests 24 hours apart. The good news is that the second-year tight end is experiencing only mild symptoms and is targeting a return to the field as soon as he clear's the league's COVID-19 protocols. David Wells should handle an increase in repetitions in training camp behind Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith until Asiasi returns to the field. The 23-year-old had just two catches on seven targets for 39 yards and a touchdown in nine games (three starts) in his rookie season. Asiasi would likely need one of Henry or Smith to go down with an injury to see a bigger workload, and even then he probably wouldn't be on the fantasy radar in most leagues.
New England Patriots tight end Devin Asiasi has promising upside, but it remains to be seen how the team decides to use him. Currently, Ryan Izzo is listed as the starting tight end for Week 1 versus the Miami Dolphins. However, he's likely there because of his excellent blocking ability. Asiasi should see some passes thrown his way, but it's unclear how much action he'll see during their first game. He won't be a great fantasy option for Week 1, but has low-end TE2 value. Asiasi could have more value down the road, but it really depends on his role in the offense.
The New England Patriots have selected UCLA tight end Devin Asiasi with the No. 91 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Asiasi made a name for himself during his final season at UCLA. He hauled in 44 receptions for 641 receiving yards and four touchdowns through 12 games in 2019. He has great size and speed, but won't help much as a blocker. The Patriots don't have much talent at tight end ever since Rob Gronkowski retired and was then traded to Tampa Bay, so Asiasi might be able to make some noise right away as a pass-catcher. He fits in the Pats system well, so we'll see how head coach Bill Belichick decides to use him. It's still unlikely that Asiasi develops into a fantasy relevant weapon in his rookie season, though, especially with the questions under center in New England in the post-Tom Brady era.
