Former Chicago Bears tight end Dion Sims, who didn't play at all in 2019, announced on Twitter on Friday that he is retiring from the NFL. The Michigan State product played six seasons in the league with the Bears and Dolphins after being selected in the fourth round by Miami in 2013. Sims caught 91 passes for 888 yards and nine touchdowns in his career, playing his final two seasons with Chicago. The 29-year-old had a career-high 36 receptions for 284 yards and two touchdowns with the Dolphins in 2014 and also had a career-high four touchdowns in his final season in Miami in 2016.
The Chicago Bears are expected to release tight end Dion Sims, according to a source. He was due $6 million in 2019, so he'll become a salary cap casualty. The 28-year-old played in just 22 games in his two years in Chicago and caught only 17 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown over that span. Sims is mainly a blocking tight end and won't have a huge market for his services this offseason.
Chicago Bears tight end Dion Sims (concussion) has been in the concussion protocol the last two weeks. That surely doesn't bode well for Sims' availability for the start of the regular season. It's equally bad news with Adam Shaheen also on the shelf. The 27-year-old Sims is more of a blocking tight end and had only 15 catches for 180 yards and one score in his first year with Chicago in 2017. Trey Burton will be this team's main pass-catching tight end in 2018.
Chicago Bears tight end Dion Sims still has value to the team's offense heading into 2018, according to head coach Matt Nagy. The nice thing with Dion is that hes a guy thats proven to be a solid blocker, Nagy said. He can be in there and be your Y tight end, but yet he still has really good hands. He can make plays on intermediate routes. Hes not going to be anybody thats a downfield threat I think he knows that, we all know that but hes a valuable piece of this puzzle. Chicago had the chance to cut Sims before March 16 and save $5.666 million against the salary cap. He's coming off a bad year with just 15 catches for 180 yards and a touchdown, and the Bears added Trey Burton in free agency and also have promising sophomore Adam Shaheen in the fold. Sims is a better blocker than pass catcher and is unlikely to hold any fantasy value unless Burton is injured.
Chicago Bears tight end Dion Sims, who was signed to an $18 million deal over three years with $10 million guaranteed, could be a candidate for release this offseason after catching just 15 passes for 180 yards and one touchdown in 14 games. The Bears expected Sims to be much more involved in the passing game after he caught a career-high 26 passes for four touchdowns in 2016 with Miami. Sims was targeted only 29 times all year and was targeted three times or more in just three games and had zero targets in seven games. Rookie Adam Shaheen became the team's main pass-catching tight end late in the season, leaving Sims as the main blocking tight end. If Sims returns in 2018, Chicago will certainly expect more production in the passing game, but with Shaheen having more long-term upside, Sims wouldn't be on the fantasy radar. His best bet is likely to be released and latch on with another club, where he could find a more consistent role in the offense.
Chicago Bears wide receiver Dontrelle Inman (groin) and tight end Dion Sims (illness) are both active in Week 12 against the Eagles. Inman has become the team's top receiver after being traded over from the Chargers, but he remains a hit-or-miss fantasy option in a run-first offense. Consider Inman a very shaky WR4/flex play against the Eagles. Sims has missed the last couple of weeks with an undisclosed illness and is more of a blocking tight end. Rookie Adam Shaheen will be the team's main pass-catching tight end for the rest of the season.
Chicago Bears wide receiver Dontrelle Inman (groin) and tight end Dion Sims (illness) are questionable for Week 12 against the Eagles. Inman has been one of Chicago's better receivers since being acquired in a trade, but he had just three catches for 43 yards in Week 11 and remains a WR4/5 on a run-first team. Sims hasn't played in several weeks with an undisclosed illness and is not a fantasy factor, even if active. Rookie Adam Shaheen will be the main pass-catching tight end for the rest of the season and has low-end streaming appeal.
Chicago Bears tight end Dion Sims (illness) is inactive for the second straight week against the Lions. Sims hasn't practiced the last two weeks and is clearly dealing with a pretty serious illness, although not many details have emerged on his condition. With Zach Miller (leg) out for the rest of the year, it looks like rookie Adam Shaheen will continue to roll with top tight end duties in Chicago. He has upside, but not much to close out the year in Chicago's run-first offense with rookie Mitch Trubisky at the helm. Shaheen is more of a risky TE2.
Chicago Bears tight end Dion Sims (illness) missed practice again Friday and is questionable for Week 11 against the Lions. Sims hasn't practiced the last two weeks and is looking highly doubtful again this weekend after being inactive in Week 10. Even if he suits up, Sims is not on the streaming radar as mainly a blocking tight end. Rookie Adam Shaheen should be the team's main pass-catching tight end to close out the year, but his upside is limited with rookie QB Mitch Trubisky learning on the job. Shaheen is a low-end TE2 against Detroit.
Chicago Bears tight end Dion Sims (illness) missed another practice Thursday. Sims didn't practice all last week or play in Week 10 and is trending towards being out again this weekend. While we don't know the full details of his illness, it's likely something serious. When healthy, Sims isn't a fantasy option anyway. Rookie Adam Shaheen should continue to serve as the main pass-catching tight end for the Bears, but he is merely a TE2 option with upside in a run-first offense.
