With Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the league's concussion protocol this week, the team signed free-agent quarterback E.J. Perry to their practice squad on Tuesday, according to his agent. The Jaguars have only C.J. Beathard backing Lawrence up at the position, so Perry will give the Jags a little bit more insurance if Lawrence isn't cleared by doctors before their Week 16 contest versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. The 25-year-old Perry has never appeared in an NFL game, but he has familiarity with Jacksonville's system after serving on their practice squad all of last year.
The Houston Texans waived quarterback E.J. Perry on Thursday. The Texans have decided to move in another direction after claiming Perry off waivers in March. He spent last season on the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad and never made his way into an official game. The 24-year-old played his college ball at Brown University and has yet to play in an NFL game. Perry will look to latch on with another organization before the 2023 season, where he'll likely work on a practice squad yet again.
E.J. Perry Struggles In Preseason Finale Against The Falcons
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback E.J. Perry completed 19 of his 37 passing attempts for 201 yards and one touchdown while throwing two interceptions against the Atlanta Falcons. Perry was the lone quarterback on the Jaguars to take snaps in the team's final preseason contest on Saturday. The undrafted rookie out of Brown is hoping to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, but his chances of being on the active roster appear unlikely. Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard are the top two quarterbacks on Jacksonville's depth chart for the second consecutive season. While Perry is doubtful to carve out a role on the active roster to begin the 2022 season, the Jaguars could certainly sign him to their practice squad.
After initially expected to sign with Philadelphia, former Brown quarterback E.J. Perry will be signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The undrafted 24-year-old received an offer from the Eagles, but the team was waiting to hear back from Nevada alum Carson Strong, who they ultimately agreed to terms with. Strong was expected to be drafted, but medical staffs had pushed back due to his knee issues, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. It makes sense that Philadelphia would opt for Strong and not carry multiple undrafted free-agent quarterbacks on the roster. Perry finished 2021 with 3,034 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, adding 402 yards and an additional seven scores on the ground. He was named the Ivy League's offensive player of the year. He now joins a Jaguars quarterback room with C.J. Beathard and Jake Luton competing to back up starter Trevor Lawrence.
