Carolina Panthers running back Fozzy Whittaker (knee) was placed on Injured Reserve on Thursday after tearing the ACL in his knee during organized team activities this week, according to a source. Whittaker had seven carries and just five receptions in 12 games last season and was set to serve as running back depth on third downs in 2018.
Fozzy Whittaker was carted off the field Thursday night with an ankle injury. Whittaker carried the ball once for negative three yards against the Eagles and did not return in the game. Whittaker caught a 28-yard touchdown pass two weeks ago but for the most part has been an afterthought in the Panthers offense. The extent of Whittaker's injury is unknown but appeared to be serious.
Carolina Panthers running back Fozzy Whittaker agreed to a two-year, $2.5 million deal to return to the team Tuesday. Whittaker should return as the team's third or fourth running back in 2017. He put up his best numbers in his four-year career in 2016, running 57 times for 265 yards and no touchdowns. That tells you pretty much all you need to know about Whittaker for fantasy purposes.
Fozzy Whittaker Gets Nine Catches and 92 All-Purpose Yards; Is A Viable Flex Play in PPR Leagues
Though it appears at this point that the Carolina Panthers' running back corps remains shrouded in mystery. Never fear, last week's contest sheds more light on this Game of Touches, as Cameron Artis-Payne, Fozzy Whittaker, Mike Tolbert, and even Cam Newton are all seemingly vying for a small number of backfield touches. Sunday's game versus the Falcon's was no different. Whittaker, ever the pass-catching back, caught nine passes for 86 yards, but only rushed three times for six yards. His backfield mate, Artis-Payne was no better, rushing only 12 yards on six carries. After this performance, the more valuable back is clearly Whittaker, who figures to continue seeing work with the passing game, both now and when Jonathan Stewart returns from injury. The same can't currently be said for Artis-Payne. In PPR leagues, Whittaker has solid value as a flex play for next week's matchup versus the Buccaneers.
