Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said wide receiver Griff Whalen (toe) is dealing with turf toe and could miss a couple of weeks. He's not expected to be ready for Week 1 against the Rams and is a candidate for an injury settlement. Whalen's emergence may have made Ryan Switzer (traded to the Steelers) expendable. However, even if healthy, Whalen would be no better than fifth on the depth chart behind Amari Cooper, Jordy Nelson, Martavis Bryant and Seth Roberts.
Griff Whalen Catches Touchdown In Preseason Action
Oakland Raiders wide receiver Griff Whalen came away with one touchdown in Saturday's preseason loss versus the Rams. Whalen ended with two receptions for 13 yards and one touchdown, on a team-high four targets. Whalen had been working with the first two offensive units this past week at practice and will continue to compete for a roster spot. The in-game success and practice with the top offenses are encouraging signs for Whalen, who also has some potential in their special teams return game.
Griff Whalen Impressing, But Fighting For Roster Spot
Oakland Raiders wide receiver Griff Whalen had a positive preseason opener versus the Lions and is looking to build on that Saturday against the Rams. Whalen played on 14 offensive snaps against the Lions, with both the first and second units. He followed that up with a strong week of practice where he again worked with the first unit, ahead of Ryan Switzer. Whalen also had a bit of work in the return game, further showing his value in what is a tight competition after the top two receivers for the Raiders.
Both Oakland Raiders wide receivers Griff Whalen and Ryan Switzer have been working out of the slot, but Whalen has worked ahead of Switzer in practices. The two are both undersized slot men with experience in the return game. Its neck-and-neck with those guys. When Seth Roberts gets back, its a very competitive position at the slot," head coach Jon Gruden said. Keon Hatcher, Johnny Holton and Dwayne Harris could also make cases for the final roster. The Raiders are expected to keep no fewer than six wideouts heading into Week 1. This is a battle for the No. 4 receiving job behind Amari Cooper, Jordy Nelson and Martavis Bryant. Whalen and Switzer are unlikely to come into fantasy relevance unless an injury occurs ahead of them.
