The Denver Broncos signed veteran free-agent linebacker Joe Schobert to an undisclosed deal on Monday, according to a source. Schobert starred for the Cleveland Browns and was most recently with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year, when he recorded 112 tackles (70 solo), one interception, six passes defensed and one forced fumble in 16 games. He will help fill the void created by an injury to Jonas Griffith (elbow), who will miss at least a month of action. The 28-year-old Schobert is expected to compete for a backup spot with Justin Strnad in Denver. Schobert brings plenty of experience to an already strong Broncos defense, and he's recorded 100-plus tackles in five of his six NFL seasons.
Free-agent linebacker Joe Schobert is visiting with the New Orleans Saints on Friday, according to a source. Schobert had 112 tackles last year for the Pittsburgh Steelers and made the Pro Bowl in 2017 while playing for the Cleveland Browns. He was released by Pittsburgh in March after he tallied 70 solo tackles, one interception, six passes defensed and one forced fumble in 16 games played. If he were to sign with the Saints, Schobert would likely mix in with Demario Davis at inside linebacker. The 28-year-old has 661 career tackles (406 solo), 23 tackles for loss, 26 QB hits, 11 sacks, 10 interceptions (one for a touchdown), 30 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in six NFL seasons.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Pittsburgh Steelers are finalizing a deal to acquire linebacker Joe Schobert from the Jacksonville Jaguars. The terms of the deal are not yet reported but it appears that Schobert will join Pittsburgh just one year into a five-year deal that he signed with the Jaguars last offseason. Schobert spent the first four years of his career with the Cleveland Browns, so he will be familiar with the opposing offenses in the AFC North. He made 141 tackles and had 2.5 sacks as a member of the Jags last season. A lock for at least 100 tackles annually, he remains a starting-caliber linebacker in fantasy IDP leagues.
The Jacksonville Jaguars agreed to a five-year, $53.75 million deal with former Cleveland Browns linebacker Joe Schobert on Tuesday, according to a source. Schobert will receive an average of $10.75 million per season, $12 million to sign and $22.5 million in guarantees. The 26-year-old from Wisconsin had 408 combined tackles (252 solo), 8.5 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, 19 QB hits, six interceptions and 20 passes defensed in his fours with Cleveland. He was a Pro Bowler in 2017 and compiled 133 tackles (89 solo), seven tackles for loss, four QB hits, four interceptions, nine passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 2019. He's an exceptional playmaker in the middle of the field and has had 100-plus combined tackles each of the last three seasons. He's a very solid addition to Jacksonville's defense.
Cleveland Browns linebacker Joe Schobert (hamstring) is week-to-week and "will be down for a little while," according to head coach Hue Jackson. It's a blow to a Cleveland defense that will be facing a strong offense in the Buccaneers in Week 7. Schobert has been a starter in 2018 and has posted 49 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and an interception in six games. Expect James Burgess to fill in at middle linebacker for however long Schobert is out.
