The New Orleans Saints re-signed safety Johnathan Abram to an undisclosed deal on Wednesday after re-signing defensive back Ugo Amadi on Tuesday. The Saints lost some depth in their secondary this year by releasing safety Marcus Maye and letting cornerbacks Isaac Yiadom and Lonnie Johnson Jr. to move on in free agency, so keeping both Abram and Amadi allows them to keep some of their depth intact. Abram, a 27-year-old former 27th overall pick by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019 out of Mississippi State, played in just nine games (three starts) for the Saints last year and had 26 tackles (14 solo), an interception and a forced fumble. He hasn't lived up to his first-round draft stock in his five NFL seasons, mainly because of injuries.
Packers Claim Johnathan Abram Off Waivers From Raiders
The Green Bay Packers claimed safety Johnathan Abram off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday, according to a source. The Raiders waived the former first-rounder on Tuesday, but he'll quickly latch on with a new team. The 26-year-old is a bruiser and a physical presence in the secondary, but failure to succeed in coverage is ultimately what caused him to be cut by the Raiders. He'll likely be eased into his new environment in Green Bay, but Abram could eventually enter the team's starting lineup in the secondary. The Packers have actually allowed the second-fewest passing yards per game (170.6) this year. In eight games in Vegas before getting cut, Abram had 48 tackles (35 solo) and one pass defensed.
In a surprise move, the Las Vegas Raiders released former first-round safety Johnathan Abram on Tuesday, according to a source. The Raiders shopped Abram at the trade deadline last week but found no takers, so he'll head to waivers. The 26-year-old was benched in Week 8 and has played only 52 defensive sacks in the last two games. The Raiders are moving forward with Duron Harmon and Trevon Moehrig as their starting safeties after moving on from Abram. The former 27th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft is a physical presence and plays with his hair on fire, but he just hasn't proven to be good enough in coverage. Abram will surely latch on with another team, but he's obviously off the fantasy radar in IDP leagues for now.
Las Vegas Raiders safety Johnathan Abram is extremely talented, but mental and fundamental errors and a lack of durability have been his downfall so far in his NFL career. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham requires his safeties to fulfill multiple roles and responsibilities, including playing deep zones, but Abram hasn't shown he's capable of that type of versatility without being a liability in coverage. However, he's impressed the coaching staff in the offseason. Abram might have a tough time holding off Duron Harmon, who can play box safety and slot corner and has a lot of familiarity with the new coaching staff.
Las Vegas Raiders safety Johnathan Abram (shoulder) will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery on Thursday, according to a source. Abram wanted to keep playing through a dislocated shoulder suffered in Monday's win over the Cleveland Browns, but doctors advised him to shut it down for the rest of the season. He should be fully healthy in 2022 and in play as a starting IDP defensive back. The 25-year-old was a top-12 fantasy safety in IDP formats this year, totaling 116 tackles (64 solo), five tackles for loss, three QB hits, one interception, four passes defensed and a fumble recovery in 14 games played. Abram's absence the rest of the way is a big blow to a Raiders secondary that has been pretty solid in 2021.
Las Vegas Raiders safety Johnathan Abram (shoulder) suffered a dislocated shoulder in Monday's win over the Cleveland Browns, after finishing with nine total tackles (six solo). Abram will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury, so the Raiders could potentially be without their 2019 first-rounder. Up until the Week 15 game, Abram didn't miss a snap all season. He is second in tackles on the team, trailing only Denzel Perryman, and is third in tackles for loss. If he is to miss some time, Roderic Teamer would likely start along with Trevon Moehrig.
Las Vegas Raiders safety Johnathan Abram (illness) missed his second straight practice on Thursday with an illness. Abram has not tested positive for COVID-19 or been placed on the COVID-19 list, so he still has a shot at playing in Week 9 against the division-rival Chargers, but he'll need to get in at least a limited practice Friday. The hard-hitting 24-year-old has 32 tackles (25 solo), one interception, three passes defensed and a fumble recovery in six games this year. If Abram is active on Sunday, he'll be a starting option at defensive back in IDP leagues. The Raiders also opened the 21-day window on rookie cornerback Damon Arnette (thumb, wrist), who went on Injured Reserve on Oct. 2.
Las Vegas Raiders safety Johnathan Abram, who is currently isolating on the COVID-19 test after he was deemed a high-risk contact, will not be cleared in time to play in Week 7 against the Buccaneers. The Raiders defense hasn't been fantasy relevant all year, but this is more bad news for them against a Tampa Bay team that just put up 30-plus points on the previously unbeaten Packers in Week 6. Those in IDP leagues will have to look in another direction at the defensive back spot with Abram out this weekend. Las Vegas' defense ranks dead last in the NFL through six weeks with just 2.6 fantasy points per game. Tom Brady could have a field day for the Buccaneers with Abram out.
Las Vegas Raiders safety Johnathan Abram will go on the COVID-19 list on Thursday because he was deemed a high-risk close contact after offensive tackle Trent Brown was placed on the COVID-19 list on Wednesday. It doesn't mean that Abram won't play in Week 7 against the Buccaneers, but he's certainly in danger of missing this weekend's game. The Raiders game for Sunday is still on against Tampa, but their secondary could be short-handed if Abram isn't cleared by then. The 23-year-old hard-hitting safety has 28 tackles (21 solo), one interception, three passes defensed and one fumble recovery in five games so far this season, but he might not be in play for IDP managers this weekend.
Las Vegas Raiders safety Johnathan Abram (shoulder, thumb) and linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski (pectoral) are both questionable for Week 4 against the Bills. Abram was limited in practice all week, while Kwiatkoski put in a full practice on Friday, so both players have a good shot at suiting up this weekend. Abram's reckless style of play makes him one of the best up-and-coming young safeties in the game, but it also puts him at a higher risk for injury. The 23-year-old missed basically his entire rookie season after suffering an injury in Week 1 last year. He has 20 combined tackles (15 solo), an interception and two passes defensed in three games this year and is a strong IDP option at his position if he plays.
