Kawann Short Cleared For Football Activities

Former Carolina Panthers two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kawann Short (shoulder), who had shoulder surgery last season, has been cleared for football activities and is already in talks with a handful of teams. The 32-year-old eight-year veteran was cut by the Panthers in February, which gave the team $8.6 million in salary cap space while generating $11 million in dead money. He was able to play in just three games in 2020 because of his shoulder injury, but he's generating more interest as a potential interior run-stopper on early downs now that he's healthy again.

Kawann Short Drawing Interest On Open Market

Free-agent defensive tackle Kawann Short said that he's receiving interest after he was released by the Carolina Panthers last week. "We had a few teams reach out, but none set in stone," Short said. "We're really trying to narrow it down to see what's the best fit for me, the best fit for my family." The eight-year veteran said that the Panthers would be interested in re-signing him to a short-term deal if he doesn't find anything to his liking elsewhere. The second-rounder was a Pro Bowler twice and racked up 32.5 sacks in his first six seasons with Carolina, but he's played in just five games since 2018 due to injuries and had just 10 tackles and no sacks in that span. The 32-year-old will likely have to sign a prove-it deal on the open market.

Panthers Releasing Kawann Short

The Carolina Panthers are releasing two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kawann Short on Tuesday after eight years with the team, according to a source. Short was a second-round selection back in 2013 and earned a five-year contract extension in 2017, but he's been mostly an afterthought on the defensive line for most of the four seasons since his extension. He has played in just five games due to recurring shoulder issues after making his second Pro Bowl in 2018. Sixth-rounder Bravvion Roy filled in for Short in 2020. The Panthers will take on $11 million in dead salary cap space with the move but will save $8.6 million of the $19.6 remaining on Short's cap number. The 32-year-old will have to take less money on the open market and prove that he's healthy with a new club.

Kawann Short To Have Season-Ending Surgery

Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Kawann Short (shoulder) will have season-ending shoulder surgery for the second year in a row. Short only appeared in two games in 2019 after suffering a partially torn rotator cuff and had only played in three of five games in 2020, recording just six tackles (three solo). For a Panthers Defense that was one of the worst against the run last season, losing Short for a second straight year is more bad news. Through five games, Carolina has allowed 133.4 rushing yards per game, the eighth-most in the NFL. Consider them a very shaky streaming option in Week 6 against the Bears, with Chicago running back David Montgomery being a solid RB2 choice for fantasy managers.

Panthers Defense Without Kawann Short, Yetur Gross-Matos

The Carolina Panthers Defense has ruled out defensive tackle Kawann Short (foot) and rookie defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (concussion) for Week 2 against the Buccaneers. A shaky Panthers defense that allowed over 30 points to the Raiders in Week 1 will be hoping that rookie defensive tackle Derrick Brown can step up against their division rivals on Sunday. Already at the bottom of the pile for fantasy defenses, Carolina should be avoided like the plague this weekend against Tom Brady and the Bucs, who are looking for their first win of the season.

Panthers Defense Loses Kawann Short For Season

The Carolina Panthers placed defensive lineman Kawann Short (shoulder) on season-ending Injured Reserve on Tuesday with a partially torn rotator cuff that he suffered in Week 2 against the Buccaneers. In a corresponding move, the team signed defensive lineman Bryan Cox from the practice squad. Short is a two-time Pro Bowler and had four tackles in two games this year. Losing the second-round pick is surely a blow to this Panthers Defense moving forward. Still, they'll be a low-end streaming option in Week 5 against a run-first Jaguars offense at home.

Kawann Short Signed To Extension

Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Kawann Short signed a five-year, $80 million contract extension Monday, according to sources. After his career-high 11 sacks in 2015, Short had six sacks last season and remains one of the top defensive tackles in the league. He'll continue to help solidify Carolina's defensive interior in 2017.

Kawann Short Expected To Sign Tender Soon

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent defensive tackle Kawann Short is likely to sign his franchise tender in the next few days, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. If he signs the tender, he'll receive $13.386 million for the 2017 season after making just over $1 million last year. Short has played in every game in each of his four seasons in the NFL, and he racked up 55 combined tackles, six sacks and one forced fumble in 2016.

Kawann Short Hit With Franchise Tag In Carolina

The Carolina Panthers placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on defensive tackle Kawann Short Monday. The two sides have until July 15 to work out a long-term extension, but other clubs can make Short a contract offer once the new league starts, and Carolina can match the offer or receive two first-round picks if they choose not to match. Short followed up his All-Pro season in 2015 with six sacks, the second highest total on the team.
