Free-agent wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald never officially retired, but he said on a SiriusXM podcast that he's not considering a return to the NFL despite the fact that Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins (knee) probably won't return until at least the NFC Championship, if the Cardinals even make it that deep into the postseason. "Nothing's changed on that front, Jim, for me," Fitzgerald said. The 11-time Pro Bowler spent his entire 17-year career with the Cardinals, but it looks like Fitz has unofficially hung up his cleats for good. In 13 games for the Cardinals in 2020, he caught 54 of his 72 targets for 409 yards and one touchdown, and he was no longer the focal point of the offense after putting up nine 1,000-yard receiving seasons.
Larry Fitzgerald Doesn’t Have The Urge To Return
Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald hasn't ruled out retirement, at least in an official capacity. However, the veteran also didn't appear too enthusiastic about a potential return, recently commenting during an interview on Sirius XM that he doesn't "have the urge to play right now." Nonetheless, even if he does come back for his 18th season, it's unlikely he would make much of a difference on the fantasy front, primarily with the Cardinals having plenty of options on the offensive end. While the former 2004 No. 3 overall pick could always suit up for another team, he would likely spend another season in Arizona, although he probably wouldn't have much purpose outside of a leadership role.
When asked by Jim Gray on SiriusXM Radio if he will play football this year, free-agent wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald sounds more like he's leaning toward a soft retirement than anything. "For now I'll be a radio broadcaster. Jim, to be honest with you, I just don't have the urge to play right now. I don't know how I'll feel in September, October, November moving forward but I just, today, I just don't have the urge," Fitzgerald said. If the 37-year-old future Hall of Famer does decide to return, it'll probably only be with the Arizona Cardinals, where he'd likely have a much smaller role than he did in his first two seasons in Arizona with head coach Kliff Kingsbury when he averaged 6.2 targets per game. If this is truly it for Fitz, he'll finish with an amazing 1,432 receptions for 17,492 yards and 121 touchdowns in 263 career games over 17 seasons, all with the Cardinals.
Larry Fitzgerald Trending In Wrong Direction For Sunday
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (groin) is not expected to play in Week 17 against the Rams. Fitzgerald wasn't able to take the practice field all week, though perhaps the absence of Christian Kirk (COVID) will force the team to re-evaluate the former's availability. If he doesn't go, it will be receivers KeeSean Johnson and Andy Isabella alongside DeAndre Hopkins. Despite the tough matchup, Hopkins could be in line for a massive target share.
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (groin) has been forced to sit out practice this week while dealing with a groin injury. He is currently questionable for Week 17 against the Los Angeles Rams. If he's able to go, he is not someone worth considering in fantasy lineups for Week 17. The Rams have the league's top pass defenses and Fitzgerald has had a quiet season overall. DeAndre Hopkins (hip), who is also questionable for the game but looking more probable than Fitzgerald, is the team's only reliable fantasy wide receiver at this point.
DeAndre Hopkins, Larry Fitzgerald Miss Practice Wednesday
Arizona Cardinals wide receivers DeAndre Hopkins (hip) and Larry Fitzgerald (groin) and linebacker Haason Reddick (hip) did not take part in practice on Wednesday. Both receivers are likely just being rested early in the week ahead of a must-win Week 17 matchup with the division-rival Rams and their tough defense. Hopkins is likely to draw All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey in a rematch from Week 13 when Hopkins caught eight passes on 13 targets for 52 yards and a touchdown. Nuk has had some ups and downs in the second half of the season with quarterback Kyler Murray (leg) batting injuries, but he remains a must-start WR1 for the regular season finale. The 37-year-old Fitzgerald caught six passes and played on 86 percent of the offensive snaps last week, but he had only 28 yards in the loss to San Fran. Fitz has been a rarely used safety blanket for Murray in 2020.
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald caught six of his eight targets for 28 yards in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers. The target share was inspiring for Fitzgerald, but the yardage output was extremely underwhelming, even by Fitzgerald's typical standards. Fitzgerald entered the game averaging 7.9 yards per reception over the year. This week, he managed just 4.7 yards per reception. He's flashed some low-end PPR value here and there over the year, but he's scored only one touchdown this year and he's only topped 50 yards on three occasions.
Chase Edmonds, Larry Fitzgerald Questionable For Saturday
Arizona Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds (ankle, knee), wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (groin), linebacker Haason Reddick (shoulder) and tight end Maxx Williams (ankle) are questionable for Week 16 against the 49ers on Saturday. Edmonds was limited in practice on Thursday after sitting out Tuesday and Wednesday. He was questionable last week before out-touching and out-producing Kenyan Drake against the Eagles. The Niners are more vulnerable through the air than on the ground against RBs, too, so Edmonds will have RB3/flex appeal if he suits up. Drake would be a strong RB2 if Edmonds were to be inactive. Fitz also got in a limited practice Thursday. He had a touchdown last week but just three catches for 35 yards. With his snaps declining after a bout with COVID-19, the veteran wideout should be avoided in starting lineups this weekend. Reddick should play after being limited the last two days in practice. He ranks as the No. 17 fantasy linebacker in IDP leagues in 2020 with 39 tackles, 11 sacks, four pass breakups and five forced fumbles.
Arizona Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds (ankle, knee) and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (groin) did not practice on Wednesday. Edmonds was questionable to play in Week 15 but ended up with his best performance of the season, totaling 14 touches, 66 yards and a touchdown with more touches than Kenyan Drake. We can't expect to see that two weeks in a row, but Edmonds has RB3/flex standalone value in PPR leagues as he continues to split the touches with Drake. Make sure Edmonds gets in at least a limited practice later this week before locking him into your lineups. Fitzgerald is likely just being rested after a bout with COVID-19. The 37-year-old veteran had three catches for 35 yards and a touchdown last week, but his snaps have been on the decline and he is an unreliable, touchdown-dependent WR4/5 in deeper leagues.
Larry Fitzgerald Not A Starting Option In Championship Week
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (groin) is currently questionable for Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers as he is dealing with a groin injury. Fitzgerald made his return to the field after a two-game absence in Week 15 and went on to catch his first touchdown of the year, totaling three catches for 35 yards in the game. It's been a quiet year overall for Fitzgerald and the Cardinals passing game as a whole has struggled quite a bit lately. The 49ers have one of the league's top pass defenses and it's unlikely that any Cardinals pass-catcher, apart from DeAndre Hopkins, will be able to make much of a dent in the stat sheet. Fitzgerald can be left on waivers in all leagues going into Week 16.
