Veteran free-agent defensive lineman Lawrence Guy is signing to the Cincinnati Bengals' active 53-man roster on Tuesday after working out for the team, according to a source. The Bengals are already dealing with key injuries to their defensive line after two weeks, so Guy, a former standout with the New England Patriots, should have a chance to make an immediate impact with his new team. Cincy is dealing with injuries to Sheldon Rankins (hamstring), B.J. Hill (hamstring) and Kris Jenkins (thumb). The 34-year-old Guy was originally a seventh-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2011 out of Arizona State. He spent the last seven years with the Patriots and had 38 tackles (16 solo) in 17 games (12 starts) in New England in 2023. Guy has never had more than 4.5 sacks in a single season, so he remains off the fantasy radar in IDP leagues.
The Cincinnati Bengals are working out defensive linemen Lawrence Guy and Albert Huggins on Tuesday, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. Injuries are becoming a problem up front for the Bengals, so Guy and Huggins have real opportunities to be signed this week. Guy, a former seventh-round pick in 2011, has played in 174 NFL games and has 507 tackles, 17 sacks, and two forced fumbles in his career. Huggins went undrafted out of Clemson in 2019 and has been with eight organizations in his career. He has tallied 41 tackles in 27 game appearances.
The New England Patriots released veteran starting defensive lineman Lawrence Guy on Monday, according to a source. The Patriots are releasing the two-time Walter Payton Man of the Year early so that he can pursue other opportunities before the new league year opens. The 33-year-old should have a strong market in free agency. He was set to make $2 million in the final year of his contract in 2024 with another $1 million in per-game bonuses. The Patriots will save $3 million against the salary cap with the move. Guy leaves New England after seven years with the team, including a Super Bowl championship. The former seventh-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2011 out of Arizona State had 38 tackles (16 solo) in 17 games (12 starts) in 2023 in his final year with the Pats.
The New England Patriots and defensive tackle Lawrence Guy are working on finalizing an undisclosed four-year deal on Wednesday, according to sources. The nine-year veteran will return to the Patriots in 2021 and beyond. Guy made a visit to the division-rival Miami Dolphins a couple days ago, but the Patriots gave him one last chance to return. He had 57 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery in 14 starts last season. Guy has appeared in 62 games (60 starts) in his four-year run with the Patriots. The 31-year-old was a seventh-round selection out of Arizona State in 2011 by the Green Bay Packers. Guy has 131 solo tackles (16 for loss), 27 QB hits and seven sacks in his 62 games the last four seasons with New England.
