Matt Ammendola News
New York Jets kicker Matt Ammendola was released on Tuesday, the team announced. The 25-year-old appeared in 11 games last season, connecting on 14 of 15 extra points. However, he went just 13-for-19 on field-goal tries. Much like he was replaced by Eddy Pineiro midseason, Tuesday's release follows the Jets decision to sign both Pineiro and veteran Greg Zuerlein. With Pineiro and Zuerlein set to compete in training camp, Ammendola was the odd man out. Going forward, he should have no trouble finding his own deal that guarantees a depth role and a shot at competition.
New York Jets kicker Matt Ammendola was released on Saturday. He'll be replaced on the active roster by Alex Kessman as the team looks for a change in the kicking game. Through 11 games, Ammendola, a rookie, made 14 of 15 extra points but just 13 of 19 field goals (including zero of three from 50-plus yards out). Kessman, also a rookie, went undrafted out of Pittsburgh. He has never kicked in an NFL game and is not on the fantasy radar.
The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent kicker Matt Ammendola to an undisclosed deal on Wednesday. Ammendola will replace Lirim Hajrullahu, who was waived last week. Ammendola, a former Oklahoma State product, will be brought in to compete with Joey Slye this summer. He connected on 60 of his 78 field-goal attempts (76.9 percent) in college and 179 of his 183 extra points (97.8 percent). Ammendola went undrafted last year and has since been working with former NFL kicker Nick Novak. It remains to be seen if Ammendola can win the starting job for the Panthers, but this signing is less about him and speaks more to Slye's lack of a firm grasp on the team's starting gig heading into the 2021 season.
