Matt Barkley News
The Buffalo Bills signed free-agent quarterback Matt Barkley to an undisclosed one-year deal on Monday. Barkley was with the Carolina Panthers last year before joining the Atlanta Falcons practice squad in early January. The 31-year-old played for the Bills from 2018-20, playing in eight games (one start) and throwing for 788 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. The Bills recently traded for Case Keenum to be Josh Allen's backup in 2022, so Barkley will presumably serve as Buffalo's No. 3 QB this year. Barkley was initially a fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013 out of USC, and he's started only seven of his 19 career games in six NFL seasons.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Barkley is the latest signal-caller to land on the league's Reserve/COVID-19 list as of Friday. While the move doesn't change Carolina's game plan Sunday against the Bills, it does leave them with just two active QBs in Cam Newton and P.J. Walker, with Sam Darnold (shoulder) still on Injured Reserve. Barkley has yet to appear in a game for the Panthers this season, but he did get into eight games over the past three years with Buffalo. No matter who is under center for Carolina, they face the daunting task of figuring out the Bills defense, likely pushing Newton and/or Walker from any kind of fantasy consideration.
The Carolina Panthers are signing veteran quarterback Matt Barkley, pending a physical, per Joe Person of The Athletic. Barkley, 31, has made seven career starts in six seasons for the Eagles, Bears, and Bills, completing 58.4 percent of his passes for 2,699 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions across six seasons. The veteran signal-caller is likely just quarterback insurance behind P.J. Walker- though it could also mean that Sam Darnold (shoulder), who is day-to-day, could be heading for an absence this Sunday. Walker completed 24 of 34 passes for 258 yards, one score, and two interceptions in a start last year against the Lions. He would likely be under center with Barkley backing him up if Darnold were to miss Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
