The Jacksonville Jaguars waived running back Mekhi Sargent on Monday. The Jaguars recently signed Sargent to a futures deal in January, but now he'll head to waivers. The 25-year-old former undrafted free agent did not play in an NFL game last year after spending time with the Jaguars, Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Rams in 2021. In seven games that year, he saw only five carries for 11 yards. Sargent was buried on the running back depth chart in Jacksonville behind Travis Etienne Jr., JaMycal Hasty, D'Ernest Johnson, Snooper Conner and Qadree Ollison. He'll now look for another opportunity with another team heading into the 2023 campaign.
The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed running back Mekhi Sargent and linebacker Jamir Jones off waivers from the Los Angeles Rams on Monday. The Jaguars need more running back depth after James Robison tore his Achilles in Week 16. Dare Ogunbowale is the favorite to take over lead-back duties for the final two games of the regular season, but Sargent could join the active roster at some point. Behind Ogunbowale, the Jags also have Ryquell Armstead and Nathan Cottrell on their active roster. Sargent has played four offensive snaps in six games with the Tennessee Titans and Rams this year, seeing a combined four carries for nine yards.
The Los Angeles Rams signed running back Mekhi Sargent to their active roster on Wednesday. Sargent was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster in Week 13 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and saw two carries for five yards. Darrell Henderson Jr. (thigh) was officially active, but he didn't play a single offensive snap. The fact that the Rams have already added Sargent back to the active roster for Week 14 against the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night doesn't bode well for Henderson returning to the lead-back role. We'll keep a close eye on Henderson's practice status this week. Sony Michel filled in nicely against the Jags, carrying the rock 24 times for a season-high 121 yards and a touchdown and adding three catches for eight yards. Michel would once again be in RB2 consideration if Henderson is out or relegated to backup duties.
Tennessee Titans running back Mekhi Sargent is expected to be the backup behind undisputed starter Derrick Henry. "He was a decisive runner, he hit the hole, he tried to run through contact when somebody tried to tackle him," said general manager Jon Robinson. The Titans placed RB Darrynton Evans (knee) on the injured reserve earlier in the week, and he won't be eligible to return until Week 4. Sargent, who had an impressive preseason, will be the backup running back to star Derrick Henry. He led the Titans in rushing in the preseason and earned his spot on the 53-man roster; logging 49 carries for 187 yards and a touchdown over three games. Henry, Sargent, and Jeremy McNichols are currently the Titans' top running backs on the depth chart. The undrafted free agent is Henry's backup running back fantasy managers should target in upcoming fantasy drafts in the short term until Evans is activated from the injured reserve.
Tennessee Titans running back Mekhi Sargent rushed for 78 yards on 16 attempts and hauled in one reception for five yards and a touchdown during Saturday's 34-3 preseason win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is competing for a backup RB spot behind undisputed starter Derrick Henry with Brian Hill, Darrynton Evans (knee), and Jeremy McNichols. Sargent is averaging 4.9 YPC this preseason and has led the Titans in rushing in both games. Evans remains day-to-day with a knee injury but has seen a significant workload in camp. McNichols looked awful on Saturday by rushing for -9 yards on five attempts. Fantasy managers of Henry should continue to monitor the training camp battle for his backup throughout the preseason but expect Evans to emerge as the top option once he returns to action.
Mekhi Sargent Making Case For No. 3 Running Back Role
Tennessee Titans running back Mekhi Sargent had an impressive preseason debut on Friday against the Falcons, rushing 16 times for 58 yards. He also brought in his only target for a six-yard reception. Sargent is trying to leap Jeremy McNichols and Brian Hill on the depth chart in an attempt to make Tennessee's final roster, but The Athletic's Joe Rexrode seems to think that Sargent has a chance to do so. According to Rexrode, "Hill is still the favorite to be No. 3 running back after Henry and Evans. But Sargent looks to be closing that gap." Sargent doesn't need to be on your fantasy radar outside of deep dynasty leagues, but he should probably be on your watch list in that league format.
