Free-agent cornerback Michael Davis is signing with the Washington Commanders, according to Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team. The former 2017 undrafted free agent spent seven seasons with the Chargers, racking up 348 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, eight interceptions, and 69 passes defended in 107 games (74 starts). The Commanders have now signed or agreed to terms with four defensive backs this offseason, so it's clear the franchise is looking to vastly improve in the backend under new head coach Dan Quinn. Washington gave up a league-worst 262.2 passing yards per game in 2023.
The Los Angeles Chargers re-signed cornerback Michael Davis to a three-year deal worth $25.2 million on Monday. The deal includes $15 million in guaranteed money. The team also declined to tender restricted free-agent defensive end Isaac Rochell despite the fact that he started six games in 2020. Davis started his career as an undrafted free agent in 2017, but he has developed into a dependable starter in the secondary. He's made 35 starts in the last three seasons and led the team in passes defensed (14) and interceptions (three) last year. The 26-year-old will enter the 2021 season as the longest-tenured member of the team's secondary and will not be fighting for a starting spot like he has in years past.
Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Michael Davis provided the third interception of the afternoon against vaunted quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but Davis' was the first one to count after the refs got involved. Two early interceptions of Mahomes were overturned due to rule infractions, so when Davis caught the pass that hit him square in the chest on the second play of the third quarter, it was a huge change in the game. Davis' interception would lead to a go-ahead touchdown, but the lead was short-lived. The Chargers Defense was immediately hamstrung by the special teams unit when the ensuing kickoff was returned for 104 yards and a touchdown. The Chargers defense has some seriously good pieces, but improvement will be needed if they're to be a regular fantasy force next season.
