The Carolina Panthers re-signed cornerback Rashaan Melvin to an undisclosed one-year deal on Wednesday. In his first year with the Panthers in 2021, Melvin played in just 10 games (two starts) and recorded 16 tackles (12 solo). The 32-year-old didn't play at all in 2020 after opting out due to COVID-19, and he's expected to once again provide valuable depth to Carolina's secondary in 2022. Melvin has played for six different NFL teams in his seven seasons and has a total of 260 tackles (223 solo), five tackles for loss, four interceptions, 41 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in 74 games (42 starts). He won't be on the IDP radar.
The Carolina Panthers are signing cornerback Rashaan Melvin to their active roster from the practice squad on Monday, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Melvin played 29 defensive snaps and had four tackles (three solo) in the Thursday night win over the Houston Texans in Week 3. The Panthers are in need of cornerback depth with first-rounder Jaycee Horn (foot) expected to miss several months, and Carolina also traded for former first-rounder C.J. Henderson on Monday. Melvin has six tackles (four solo) in two games played for the Panthers this year and should continue to provide depth for the Panthers secondary with Horn sidelined.
The Carolina Panthers signed veteran free-agent cornerback Rashaan Melvin to an undisclosed one-year deal on Thursday, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. The Panthers will be Melvin's 10th team. He opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 after signing a one-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Melvin played in 13 games for the Detroit Lions in 2019 and has been an NFL journeyman over the course of his career. In addition to Melvin, the Panthers defense has added Haason Reddick, Denzel Perryman and Morgan Fox as they look to rebuild on that side of the ball. The 31-year-old Melvin has 244 combined tackles (211 solo), four interceptions, 41 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 64 career games (40 starts).
The Detroit Lions signed free-agent cornerback Rashaan Melvin to a one-year, $3.5 million deal on Friday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Melvin played for the Patriots in 2015 when head coach Matt Patricia was the defensive coordinator. The 29-year-old has been mostly a starter the last three seasons with the Colts and Raiders and had a career-high three interceptions with the Colts in 2017. He could be the replacement for Nevin Lawson, who signed with the Raiders earlier this week.
The Oakland Raiders are expected to sign free-agent cornerback Rashaan Melvin, according to a source. Melvin was regarded as the best cornerback left on the market, and he'll help improve an Oakland secondary that lost T.J. Carrie and Sean Smith. Melvin was having a great year in 2017 before suffering an injury. He had 36 tackles and three interceptions in just 10 games for the Colts last season.
Free-agent cornerback Rashaan Melvin could fill a need for the Oakland Raiders, and ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Raiders are "in discussions" with Melvin. The Raiders are running low on corners after letting each of T.J. Carrie, Sean Smith and David Amerson walk, and Melvin is one of the best players remaining in the picked-over corner market. A late-bloomer, 28-year-old Melvin is coming off a strong year in Indianapolis, though he missed six games with injury.
Green Bay and Oakland Show Interest in Rashaan Melvin
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, both the Green Bay Packers and the Oakland Raiders have expressed interest in free-agent cornerback Rashaan Melvin. Melvin played for Indianapolis for the last two seasons and is one of the many standout cornerbacks who became free agents this offseason. After a flurry of deals announced recently, he is one of the only remaining top cornerbacks on the market. The 28-year-old cornerback is a tall player who uses his physicality well. Green Bay has been in need of a cornerback for several seasons. After the contract expiration of cornerback Davon House and the trading away of cornerback Damarius Randall, the position is the largest need for Green Bay this offseason. Oakland similarly is in need of a cornerback. They recently released Sean Smith and lost T.J. Carrie to Cleveland in free agency. Melvin would be a huge difference maker for both teams and would foreseeably raise the profile of each teams defense considerably.
Rashaan Melvin "Wouldn't Mind Going Back" to Indianapolis
In an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Indianapolis Colts impending free-agent cornerback Rashaan Melvin stated that he "wouldn't mind" re-signing with the team for the upcoming season. "I'm waiting to see exactly where we stand," said Melvin, "I know it's all positive... They told me they want me to be back." Melvin was a cornerstone of Indianapolis' defense in 2017, leading the Colts in interceptions and allowing a 60.3 passer rating in coverage before his season was cut short in December. With the departure of veteran cornerback Vontae Davis and the third highest salary cap space in the NFL, the Colts need to focus on building their young secondary around a talented player like Melvin.
The Indianapolis Colts placed cornerback Reshaan Melvin (hand) on Injured Reserve on Wednesday, per Colts.com. Melvin has been an integral part of the Colts pass defense, ranking as Pro Football Focus' No. 24 cover corner out of 121 qualifiers and displaying exceptional tackling ability as a run defender in his fourth NFL season. With him heading into the 2018 offseason as an unrestricted free agent, a big payday is all but certain and Indianapolis will surely vie for his services in the future as part of their rebuilding efforts. The Colts passing defense is likely to be even more exploitable in Week 17 if the Houston Texans choose to run with their starters.
