Richie James News
The New York Giants agreed with former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver/returner Richie James on an undisclosed one-year deal on Friday, according to a source. The former seventh-round pick missed last year with a knee injury after recording a career-high 23 catches in 2020. The 26-year-old from Middle Tennessee State will be more valuable to the Giants as a kick returner than a wideout, so fantasy managers can safely ignore him in all formats. In his three NFL seasons (all with the Niners), James has only 38 receptions for 689 yards and three touchdowns on 59 targets in 40 games (10 starts). He'll provide depth behind the likes of Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney, Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton and John Ross.
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver/kick returner Richie James (knee) needs surgery that is expected to keep him out at least six weeks, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. There goes most of James' deep league sleeper appeal as the team's potential slot receiver. The 25-year-old set career-highs in 2020 in offensive snaps (405), catches (23) and receiving yards (394), but he'll have enough time to return after the start of the regular season and carve out a role that could make him relevant in deeper fantasy leagues. Mohamed Sanu, Trent Sherfield, Jalen Hurd, Nsimba Webster, Jauan Jennings and others will look to capitalize behind Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel early in the season.
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Richie James Jr. reeled in his only target, a 29-yard reception, in Week 12 against the Los Angeles Rams. The 49ers weren't able to do much through the air this week when any pass-catcher not named Deebo Samuel was involved. Samuel led the team with 11 catches for 133 yards while no other 49er had more than 35 receiving yards. James is behind Samuel, Kendrick Bourne and tight end Jordan Reed in the pecking order. That's not to mention the team's running backs, who are heavily involved in the passing game, or rookie receiver Brandon Aiyuk (COVID), who should be back next week. James can remain on waivers in all fantasy leagues at this point.
