Jets Pick Up Ryan Griffin's Option

The New York Jets exercised the 2020 option on tight end Ryan Griffin on Saturday, according to a source. Griffin signed an extension with the team last November after making a strong impression and starting in all 13 games that he played. It helped that Chris Herndon couldn't get on the field much because of injuries, but Griffin took advantage of the opportunity to catch 34 passes for 320 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. The 30-year-old former sixth-round pick of the Texans in 2013 will have to earn his playing time over Herndon in 2020, though, so he can likely be avoided in standard-sized fantasy leagues.

Ryan Griffin Underwent Ankle Surgery

New York Jets tight end Ryan Griffin (ankle) said he had surgery a week ago to repair ligament damage in his ankle. He's looking at a six-month rehab, so Griffin could miss organized team activities. Griffin had 34 receptions (41 targets) for 320 yards and a career-high five touchdowns in 13 games in his first season with Gang Green. Most of his production came as a result of Chris Herndon IV being injured, however, so there's no guarantee that Griffin will be as involved in the offense in 2020. Missed time next spring and into the summer after his surgery could also be an issue.

Jets Put Ryan Griffin On Injured Reserve

The New York Jets placed tight end Ryan Griffin on Injured Reserve on Thursday and activated offensive lineman Brent Qvale in a corresponding move. Griffin became a streaming TE2 option at fantasy's thinnest position in 2019, mainly because Chris Herndon IV was injured all year. The 29-year-old finishes with 34 catches on 41 targets for 320 yards and five touchdowns. He's unlikely to be attractive, even as a backup tight end, in 2020 fantasy drafts. In the final three games, expect Daniel Brown to be Gang Green's primary tight end, although he's not worth your time in fantasy at all.
