The Philadelphia Eagles officially released running back Ryan Mathews (neck) on Tuesday. Mathews had long been expected to be released, but the team needed to make sure he could pass a physical so that they would not have to pay him an injury settlement. Old, injury prone, and unemployed over a week into the preseason schedule, Mathews will have a hard time finding an NFL job this season.
Ryan Mathews Arrives In Philadelphia, Resolution Expected Soon
Philadelphia Eagles running back Ryan Mathews (neck) arrived in Philadelphia today. There should be a resolution on his roster status soon. It is almost a certainty that Mathews will be released as soon as he passes a physical. With the offseason addition of LeGarrette Blount, there is no room for the oft-injured Mathews on the Eagles depth chart. Long expected to be released, Mathews should finally receive official word this year. His market once released, if it exists at all, will be incredibly slow. He may have already played his last NFL snap.
Philadelphia Eagles running back Ryan Mathews (neck) was not at practice at mandatory minicamp Tuesday. The team is being cautious with Mathews, and he's still not 100 percent. He's likely to be released when he's fully healthy. Philly is going in another direction with their running game after drafting Donnel Pumphrey, and Mathews is likely to be playing on another team in 2017. Right now, he carries zero fantasy value.
LeGarrette Blount's Role To Be Similar To Ryan Mathews' Last Year
Philadelphia Eagles running back LeGarrette Blount is expected to be red similarly to how running back Ryan Mathews was last season -- he'll be used in more than just short-yardage situations. But with Philadelphia using more of a running-back-by-committee approach, head coach Doug Pederson will need to be creative with how he uses all of his runners. Mathews had 155 attempts in 2016, and PhillyVoice's Jimmy Kempski estimates Blount to see 170 carries this season. Blount, 30, had 299 attempts with New England last year, so he'll obviously be losing a ton of work with his new squad. He also rushed for career highs in yards (1,161) and touchdowns (18), so Blount is due for serious regression. Do not overdraft him. He'll be a touchdown-dependent RB3/flex type for those in standard-scoring formats.
Philadelphia Eagles running back Ryan Mathews is unlikely to be with the team in 2017 after the club signed running back LeGarrette Blount. This has been the expectation all along, so it should come as no surprise. Mathews will turn 30 this season and had just 155 carries for 661 yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games in 2016. He'll likely latch on with another team if he proves his health, but he's currently off the fantasy map.
