The Jacksonville Jaguars cut running back Ryquell Armstead on Monday, according to a league source. The former fifth-round pick out of Temple had 50 carries for 188 yards (3.8 yards per carry) and no rushing touchdowns in his two seasons with the Jaguars. He also added 17 catches on 28 targets for 160 yards and two touchdowns through the air. The 25-year-old will be looking to latch on with another team before the start of the 2022 regular season in order to provide running back depth. Armstead is well off the fantasy radar for obvious reasons.
The Jacksonville Jaguars signed running back Ryquell Armstead to the 53-man roster on Wednesday. He was cut by the Giants, Saints and recently worked out for the Packers. The 25-year-old returns to Jacksonville, a fifth-round pick by the Jaguars in 2019. Armstead missed the 2020 season due to COVID-19 after rushing for 108 yards on 35 carries for the Jaguars in 2019. Carlos Hyde (concussion) was placed on injured reserve, Armstead was brought on for depth purposes, and won't be on the fantasy radar unless starter James Robinson misses time.
After losing James White (hip) indefinitely with a hip injury, the New England Patriots worked out four free agent running backs. The Patriots brought in Ryquell Armstead, Ito Smith, Artavis Pierce and Dontrell Hilliard. Armstead had a work out with the Washington Football Team prior to Week 3 and was cut by the Giants in the preseason. Smith is most known for his time as a backup running back for the Atlanta Falcons and suited up with the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings this offseason. Pierce spent his rookie season with the Chicago Bears in 2020 and was one of their final cuts this offseason. Hilliard has spent the bulk of his four-year career as a backup running back for the Cleveland Browns and finished his 2020 season with the Houston Texans. Regardless of if any of the four are signed, they can remain on the waiver wire. With White sidelined, Damien Harris will remain the top option in the Patriots backfield with veteran Brandon Bolden and rookies J.J. Taylor and Rhamondre Stevenson also seeing a piece of the backfield. Bolden led the Patriots backfield in snaps in Week 3, but the Patriots have plenty options and tend to change up their running game on a weekly basis. For now, Harris remains the safest Patriots running back to roster.
Ryquell Armstead Gets Workout With Washington Football Team
The Washington Football Team worked out running backs Ryquell Armstead and D'Onta Foreman. Armstead missed the entire 2019 season on the COVID-19/reserve list. Foreman spent training camp with the Atlanta Falcons, but was a part of the team's final cuts. The Washington Football Team has running backs Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic running the show in their backfield and these workouts seem to just be the team freshening up their free agency list. Even if Armstead or Foreman get signed, they can be avoided in all formats at the moment.
Washington Works Out Ryquell Armstead, D'Onta Foreman
The Washington Football Team worked out free-agent running backs Ryquell Armstead and D'Onta Foreman on Monday. Washington currently has Antonio Gibson, J.D. McKissic and rookie Jaret Patterson on the active roster at the running position, so they're just likely updating their emergency list at running back. Armstead sat out in 2020 while with the Jacksonville Jaguars due to COVID-19, and he was claimed off waivers by the New York Giants this offseason before being waived. The 24-year-old had 35 carries for 108 yards with the Jags in his rookie season in 2019. Foreman was released by the Atlanta Falcons earlier this month. A third-round pick in 2017, he had 22 carries for 95 yards in six games with the Tennessee Titans last year.
The New York Giants waived former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Ryquell Armstead on Thursday. Armstead didn't play at all in 2020 while on the Reserve/COVID-19 list with the Jaguars, but he did manage to catch 14 of his 24 targets for 144 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie season in 2019. The 24-year-old former fifth-round pick out of Temple will hope to latch on with another organization as running back depth. Back in New York, Devontae Booker and Elijhaa Penny will be providing depth behind starter Saquon Barkley, who is returning in 2021 after tearing his ACL last season.
The New York Giants claimed former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Ryquell Armstead off waivers on Tuesday, according to a source. The Jaguars waived Armstead on Monday, and he didn't go long without a team. The 24-year-old missed all of last year with an injury while also going on the league's COVID-19 list two separate times. The first-round selection of Clemson running back Travis Etienne sealed Armstead's fate with Jacksonville. Armstead will join a Giants backfield that will be getting Saquon Barkley back from injury in 2021. He'll be competing with the likes of Devontae Booker, Elijhaa Penny and Corey Clement, among others, for a spot on the final roster this summer. After being a fifth-round pick in 2019, Armstead had 35 carries for 108 yards while also catching 14 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games (one start) in his rookie season.
The Jacksonville Jaguars waived running back Ryquell Armstead on Monday after he missed all of the 2020 season because of complications related to COVID-19. The 24-year-old went on the Reserve/COVID-19 list twice last year, spending 19 days on the list the first time. He dealt with a groin injury and another illness before going back on the list. The Jaguars took Armstead in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft, and he ran for 108 yards on 35 carries as a rookie. If not for his injuries and illness last year, he likely would've played a large role in the offense after the team cut Leonard Fournette, but undrafted rookie James Robinson won the starting job and ran for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns. Jacksonville also selected former Clemson running back Travis Etienne 25th overall in the first round of last month's draft.
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Ryquell Armstead hasn't appeared in a game this season as he's been on the NFL's COVID-19 list since training camp. It now appears that Armstead is done for the rest of 2020, as complications from the disease have led him to be hospitalized twice. Armstead's case is a reminder that COVID-19 is a serious illness with long-term health effects for many who get it.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed running back Ryquell Armstead on the COVID-19 list. He won't be allowed to practice or play until he's cleared to return from the list, throwing a big wrench into the "Armstead will be the lead back in Jacksonville" discussion. With Leonard Fournette now in Tampa, an extended absence for Armstead could have some huge implications. Chris Thompson could play a larger role than expected and become a solid PPR flex option. Devine Ozigbo could get early down work and have some deep league appeal. And Armstead could find himself on the outside of the rotation when he returns, making him a negative fantasy asset.
