Scott Tolzien and Jacoby Brissett To Split First-Team Reps
According to Zak Keefer of the Indy Star, the Indianapolis Colts plan on splitting first-team quarterback reps between quarterbacks Scott Tolzien and Jacoby Brissett in team practices this week. Following Tolzien's abhorrent performance against Los Angeles, the Colts are desperately looking for someone to prevent the team from being winless when Andrew Luck returns from his shoulder injury. If Brissett gets an opportunity to start, you can be certain that there will be more upside for T.Y. Hilton and the rest of the receiving core in Week 2 against Arizona. His willingness to throw the deep ball is something that Tolzien simply doesn't have, meaning the fantasy value for skill position players will ultimately be there in a shootout-style matchup.
Scott Tolzien Throws Two Pick-Sixes In Loss to Rams
Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Scott Tolzien put forth an anemic performance in the team's season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, completing 50 percent of his passes for 128 yards and throwing two interceptions returned for touchdowns. He was benched in the middle of the third quarter in favor of the newly acquired Jacoby Brissett, who proceeded to throw a 50-yard completion to wide receiver Donte Moncrief on the ensuing drive. The Luck-less Colts' offense was expected to sputter, but the real story of this game was how porous the defense looked. Tolzien simply isn't capable of surmounting huge deficits where the game script leans toward the pass and has made clear that even when forced to throw, there is little fantasy value in the skill position players around him.
Scott Tolzien To Debut On Sunday, Won’t Be Fantasy Relevant
Indianapolis Colts' general manager Chris Ballard stated on Thursday that quarterback Scott Tolzien will be the starter when the team heads to Los Angeles on Sunday, a move that surprises no one given that former-Patriot Jacoby Brissett was acquired quite recently and hasn't had a chance to acclimate to the offense. Despite the Rams missing Aaron Donald, their defense contains plenty of solid talent including Robert Quinn on the line and Mark Barron patrolling the middle. Tolzien will also be without stalwart center Ryan Kelly, meaning he will face plenty of pressure from the opposing pass rush. Expect very little out of the Colts' offense as a whole with Tolzien leading the way, especially the skill position players.
Colts Sticking With Scott Tolzien as Starting Quarterback
Despite being inconsistent throughout training camp and preseason games, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Scott Tolzien will remain the team's starting quarterback, per Mike Wells of ESPN. "Scotty didn't play bad," head coach Chuck Pagano said about Tolzien's performance against Dallas last weekend. "It takes 11 guys hitting on all cylinders offensively." Although the Colts' first-team offense has been mostly inept so far, the team has shown a firm commitment to Tolzien as the guy to lead it. That commitment may be relaxing, however, as Tolzien showed how limited his ceiling is when he threw solely to checkdowns and safe routes over the middle against the Cowboys. Third-year quarterback Stephen Morris is climbing the depth chart after a strong showing in the same game, meaning it's only a matter of time before he gets some time with the ones. Neither offers a lot of upside for any fantasy assets in the Colts' offense, meaning knowing when Andrew Luck is slated to return will be critical.
Scott Tolzien Has Lackluster Performance Against Cowboys
It was a rough night for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Scott Tolzien during the team's preseason tilt with the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday. The first-string offense went three-and-out on three of the team's first four offensive possessions, with Tolzien looking hesitant and indecisive during extensive playing time. Ultimately, he finished with 10 completions on 14 attempts for 70 yards despite playing a full half of football. Tolzien's name should inspire fear in the hearts of fantasy owners looking for any kind of good news on the Colts' offense. It's no surprise that he connected with short yardage weapons in Jack Doyle and Robert Turbin for six of his completions, as he appears to lack both the accuracy and confidence to hit targets greater than ten yards downfield. The reality should be setting in for Colts' management that they either need to look to third year quarterback Stephen Morris or find a serviceable free agent option to ignite some kind of spark in the offense. If not, several highly ranked fantasy assets on the Colts have to take a significant hit to their draft stock should ambiguity still exist around Andrew Luck's timetable to return.
Colts' Offense Struggles With Scott Tolzien at the Helm
Although plenty of first-team starters were absent for the Indianapolis Colts first preseason game, quarterback Scott Tolzien looked abhorrent in limited action. He only completed two-of-five passes for 24 yards, all the while displaying accuracy issues and a tendency to throw erratically under pressure. Tolzien has plenty of time to improve before the team's Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, but wide receivers T.Y. Hilton and Donte Moncrief's draft rankings should clearly take a hit if Andrew Luck (shoulder) isn't able to start at some point in 2017. On the other hand, tight end Jack Doyle may be a notable beneficiary in PPR scoring of Tolzien's need to throw to a consistent, big-bodied target.
