Jacoby Brissett News
Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich said that quarterback Jacoby Brissett is taking his demotion to the backup role in stride this offseason. "He wants to do what's right for the team. And he knows. He and I have had multiple conversations about that. Jacoby doesn't need me to tell him what to do. He knows what to do," Reich said. The Colts signed veteran QB Philip Rivers in free agency, bumping Brissett down to No. 2 on the depth chart. Rivers hasn't missed a start due to injury in his career after taking over full time for the Chargers in 2006. Brissett showed flashes as the full-time starter last year, but injury issues and a weak receiving unit kept his upside to a minimum. There's a good chance he doesn't see the field much, if at all, in 2020.
The Indianapolis Colts fully intend on keeping quarterback Jacoby Brissett despite signing Philip Rivers, according to sources. Brissett's contract calls for $7 million guaranteed on Sunday and a $6 million salary in 2020, but the team considers him a special player and wants to keep him in the fold. The 27-year-old disappointed in taking over for Andrew Luck in 2019, throwing for 2,942 yards (6.6 yards per completion), 18 touchdowns and six interceptions in 15 games played. But the Colts like his makeup and he'll be a valuable backup in case Rivers continues to decline or gets injured in 2020. He'll obviously be off the fantasy radar in standard-sized leagues to begin the season as the backup, though.
Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni was impressed with quarterback Jacoby Brissett's pocket awareness and ability to extend plays outside the pocket in 2019, but he'd like to see him improve on scanning the field and getting the ball out of his hands faster. "He always knew where to go with the football, and then we just speed that up a little bit," Sirianni said. The 27-year-old is no guarantee to open the 2020 season under center, however, as the Colts are still up in the air as to whether he can be their franchise QB. They'll take a hard look at this year's great free-agent crop of quarterbacks as a result. But even if Brissett is the starter come this fall, he's more of a middling QB2 for fantasy owners without a ton of upside. The Colts receivers must also stay healthy for him to have a chance of reaching his ceiling.
