49ers Have Discussed Extension For Kendrick Bourne

The San Francisco 49ers have discussed a long-term contract extension with wide receiver Kendrick Bourne. The 24-year-old caught 30 passes for 358 yards and five touchdowns last year and has 88 career receptions for 1,102 yards and nine touchdowns (all in the last two years) in his three seasons in the league. Bourne isn't a household name, but he has two things going for him heading into the 2020 season: a potentially bigger role with Deebo Samuel (foot) a candidate to miss the start of the season, and a valuable red-zone connection with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Others in the Niners passing game could step up -- Jalen Hurd, Dante Pettis, Trent Taylor, Richie James -- but Bourne now has some late-round flier appeal in deeper leagues in an offense that values yards after the catch.

Kendrick Bourne Signs Tender

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Kendrick Bourne signed his one-year tender on Monday. Bourne had 30 receptions on 44 targets for 358 yards and a career-high five touchdowns in 16 games (zero starts) for the team in 2019. There is plenty of opportunity for Bourne and others to start in three-receiver sets in 2020 behind Deebo Samuel. With nine touchdowns in his last two seasons with the Niners, the 24-year-old has proven to be a nice red-zone presence for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but it remains to be seen if he can become a consistent starting option. There will be plenty of competition at the receiver position in San Fran, and they're also likely to address the position in the draft.

Matt Breida, Kendrick Bourne Receive Second-Round Tenders

The San Francisco 49ers tendered restricted free-agent running back Matt Breidaand wide receiver Kendrick Bourne at the second-round level, according to a source. Breida is a valuable weapon for the Niners run-heavy approach. He totaled 123 carries for 623 yards (5.1 yards per carry) and one touchdown on the ground in 2019. Breida also added 19 receptions for 120 yards and another touchdown through the air. The 25-year-old has averaged a very healthy 5.0 yards per carry in his three seasons in the NFL, but the problem is the team's crowded backfield with Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman, Jeff Wilson Jr. and Jerick McKinnon. That's a lot of bodies, making the 49ers backfield situation a nightmare for fantasy owners. It will likely take an injury or two for Breida to see the field consistently in 2020. Bourne had 30 catches for 358 yards and five touchdowns in 2019 in his third season. Even with Jalen Hurd and Dante Pettis doing next to nothing, Bourne still underwhelmed behind Deebo Samuel, Emmanuel Sanders and Marquise Goodwin.
