Could Carson Beck Sit on the Bench for his Entire Rookie Season?

The Arizona Cardinals took former University of Miami quarterback Carson Beck with the first pick in the third round of this year's draft because of his big-game experience, arm strength, size (6-foot-4, 220 pounds), accuracy, toughness, and intangibles. Beck enters a QB room in Arizona that already includes veterans Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew. New head coach Mike LaFleur said that "it won't be the worst thing" for Beck if he "ends up sitting for part or all of his rookie season." That won't be anything new for the 24-year-old, who was a backup at Georgia for his first three seasons, including sitting behind current Los Angeles Rams backup QB Stetson Bennett in 2022. "It benefits anyone in any position to be able to sit back," LaFleur said. "Sometimes, guys don't have the choice because you have to put your best 22 out on the field there." The Cardinals have some maneuvering to do with Brissett's contract this year, but that should be taken care of, and he's fully expected to start under center in 2026 after a career season in 2025 in Arizona. Beck has plenty of long-term upside as a dynasty target in fantasy, but he won't be on the redraft radar at all.

Carson Beck Selected 65th Overall by Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals selected University of Miami quarterback Carson Beck with the 65th overall pick to kick off the third round of the 2026 NFL draft on Friday night. The Cardinals were fully expected to take a signal-caller at some point in this year's draft, and it ends up coming with the first pick of the third round. The Cardinals released former first-rounder Kyler Murray (foot) after a disappointing and injury-plagued 2025 campaign. Veteran Jacoby Brissett took over for Murray last year and had a career year in a pass-heavy offense. Beck is the heir apparent in the desert under center now, and he could end up playing in 2026 under new head coach Mike LaFleur. There was a time when Beck was considered a potential first-rounder, but that all changed after he suffered a torn UCL in his right elbow in 2024. Beck is often compared to Jared Goff. The 6-foot-4, 233-pounder had questions about his arm strength after elbow surgery and finished his final collegiate season with a 72.4% completion percentage, 3,813 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 16 games played. Beck will most likely head into training camp competing with Gardner Minshew for the backup job, but if Brissett struggles early, there will be plenty of noise for the Cardinals to get the Beck era started.

Could Carson Beck be a First-Round Pick in the NFL Draft?

Miami quarterback Carson Beck has a chance to be selected in the first round of this week's NFL Draft, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com. In a conversation on the Rich Eisen Show, Pelissero said that he "can't 100% rule out" the possibility of Beck being a first-round pick. Even if Beck doesn't hear his name called within the first 32 picks, Pelissero indicated that the quarterback prospect is essentially a lock to be selected higher than most analysts and mock drafts are projecting. Up until recently, Beck was a projected fourth-rounder, according to aggregate data compiled by NFLMockDraftDatabase.com. However, on Wednesday, his projected draft position skyrocketed to #65, placing him just on the fringe of the second and third rounds. It's a shocking turn of events, but perhaps not as surprising as it seems given the thinness of this year's quarterback class. Beck was a three-year starter in college and completed an ACC-high 72.4% of his passes for 3,813 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions at Miami in 2025. Fans should now expect to hear his name called in the middle of Day 2, but we also can't rule out a late first-round pick if a team wants to guarantee an extra year of control in his rookie contract.

Steelers Eyeing Carson Beck in the Draft?

The Pittsburgh Steelers could be targeting Miami quarterback Carson Beck in this week's NFL Draft, according to Mike DeFabo of The Athletic. Beck took a pre-draft visit with the Steelers. The same can be said for Penn State's Drew Allar, but not Alabama's Ty Simpson. DeFabo notes that while Simpson has been heavily linked to the Steelers by the media, the team may be dissuaded by his limited track record in college. That's where Beck makes more sense, as he was a three-year starter in the NCAA and has significant experience playing in big games. DeFabo speculates that Beck checks every box for the Steelers, while the other two do not. Pittsburgh doesn't want to reach for Beck, but it sounds like he'll absolutely be an option for them if he's still available in the middle rounds. The Steelers' draft plans likely don't hinge too much on the status of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is a candidate to re-sign but currently remains a free agent.

Carson Beck's NFL Stock Rising?

Miami quarterback Carson Beck was once viewed as a future top signal-caller prospect for the NFL Draft, but his final season at Georgia put a damper on his outlook. After throwing for 3,941 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just six interceptions in 2023, Beck threw double the interceptions in 2024, and his Bulldogs career ended after suffering an elbow injury in the SEC Championship Game. Now, in Miami, the sixth-year senior has the Canes in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game behind 3,581 passing yards, 31 total touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. The 23-year-old has prototypical NFL size at 6'4", 225 pounds, and we've seen the stock of quarterbacks rise dramatically in the past following great postseason runs. Although he's highly unlikely to be a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, he may be playing himself into the third round after coming into the season as a Day 3 prospect. He's an interesting dynasty quarterback stash option in Superflex leagues.
