Shaun Draughn Exits Saturday's Contest With Concussion
New York Giants running back Shaun Draughn departed Saturday's contest with an apparent concussion. The 29-year-old journeyman was recently activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list on August 15 following an offseason ankle surgery which sidelined him for the majority of training camp. The seriousness of both injuries remains unclear. Draughn is currently competing for a spot on the final 53-man roster, although his inability to stay healthy is jeopardizing his chances substantially. He should be ignored in most fantasy leagues.
New York Giants 29-year-old running back Shaun Draughn was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday. Draughn has been sidelined for the first three weeks of training camp, rehabilitating an offseason ankle injury that required surgery. "The decision to actually do the surgery was hard," Draughn said. "Even during OTA's I didn't want to sit out, so training camp is (more important.) But it was a group decision so I made it happen and hopefully I can get back on the field and do what I can do." Draughn was picked up by the Giants in March, following a two-year stint with the San Francisco 49ers, where he accumulated 450 yards and five touchdowns on 150 carries. He's unlikely to have any fantasy significance in 2017.
Newly-acquired New York Giants running back Shaun Draughn has fallen behind a significant amount in the position battle with Orleans Darkwa following a post-minicamp ankle surgery. Draughn has been sidelined for the first two weeks of camp and likely won't be available until the third or fourth week of the preseason. On the other hand, Draughn's primary competition for a roster spot, Darkwa, has had an impressive camp and showed flashes of promise against the Pittsburgh Steelers in their preseason opener. Assuming Wayne Gallman has a roster spot locked up, Draughn could very well be on the outs if he struggles to make up ground. You can ignore him for fantasy purposes.
Carlos Hyde Owners: Look to Target Shaun Draughn Late
When drafting a top RB, it becomes very important to draft their backup. If not, and he gets injured, and you're unable to grab their backup off waivers, you can be in for a long season trying to plug-and-play new RBs. For those of you who draft Carlos Hyde in hopes that he breaks out in Chip Kelly's offense, you definitely want to be aware of his injury history.
Hyde missed time both in college and the NFL due to ankle injuries. He also missed more than half of last season with a foot injury. These injury issues have combined to force Hyde out of 11 of 32 possible games thus far, which is definitely some cause for alarm. Luckily, Hyde has a pretty clear backup in Shaun Draughn. When Draughn saw opportunities last year, he was able to put up 263 rushing yards and 175 receiving yards in six games. While his total yardage may not have been great, and his one touchdown didn't impress his owners, Draughn did average about four receptions per game, making him a viable PPR option in Hyde's absence. If his rushing numbers can improve in extended action, Draughn would see some solid numbers in Chip Kelly's offense should the head coach turn to him at some point this year.
