The Carolina Panthers agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million deal with linebacker Tahir Whitehead on Monday, according to a source. The deal contains $1.45 million in guarantees. Whitehead spent the last two seasons with the Raiders, and he had 108 tackles (79 solo), six tackles for loss, one QB hit and one pass defensed in a full 16 games. The soon-to-be 30-year-old has played a full season in each of the last three years and has over 100 combined tackles in each of the last four years with Oakland and Detroit. He's not the best coverage linebacker in the passing game, but he should help Carolina improve on their run defense, which was one of the worst in the league in 2019.
The Oakland Raiders signed free-agent linebacker Tahir Whitehead on Thursday. The soon-to-be 28-year-old had a great year in Detroit in 2017, posting 110 tackles, one sack, four fumble recoveries and an interception, and that came after a career-high 132 tackles in 2016. He's a fine acquisition for new head coach Jon Gruden's defense, and Whitehead should be a three-down linebacker in the middle of the defense. Keep his name in mind for IDP leagues.
Free-agent cornerback Tahir Whitehead is visiting with the Oakland Raiders, according to a source. Whitehead would figure to be a three-down linebacker in Oakland after back-to-back seasons with over 100 tackles for the Detroit Lions. The 27-year-old had 110 tackles, one sack, four fumble recoveries and one interception in 2017.
