Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Zach Banner hasn't returned to the NFL since he was released by the Steelers in the spring of last year. However, he announced on Thursday that he's not ready to retire and that he is still attempting to recover from a "devastating" knee injury that he suffered in 2020. "I also have been missing for a while, and I want everyone to know I've just been working out and training my knee," Banner wrote on Twitter. "I have not retired I'm simply just a bigger man who has needed more time to get past a devastating injury." Banner was originally a fourth-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2017, and he struggled with his weight and conditioning and was eventually released. The 29-year-old has played in 30 career games (two starts) in four NFL seasons.
The Pittsburgh Steelers placed offensive tackle Zach Banner and linebacker Marcus Allen on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday. It's unclear if either player actually tested positive for the virus, but if they did and are vaccinated, they can return to play on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs if they are asymptomatic and return a negative test. Banner has been a backup offensive lineman for Pittsburgh this year since returning from Injured Reserve, while Allen has mostly been a special teams performer for the Steelers, although he's had a sub-package role in the last two games on defense.
The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed offensive tackle Zach Banner to a two-year, $9.5 million deal. The Steelers also announced the release of linebacker Vince Williams. Banner's deal includes a $3.25 million signing bonus. Banner put in a ton of hard work to earn the team's starting tackle spot, but he went down with a season-ending ACL tear in his knee in the first game of the season last year. The Steelers need all the help they can get along the offensive line with Matt Feiler gone and Alejandro Villanueva's status up in the air. The 27-year-old Banner was a fourth-round pick out of USC by the Indianapolis Colts in 2017. He spent his first season with the Cleveland Browns before spending his last two years in Pittsburgh. Banner didn't play at all in 2018.
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has ruled right tackle Zach Banner (knee) out for the Week 2 game against the Broncos, and he's still undergoing tests for what is feared to be a season-ending torn ACL. Offensive guard Stefen Wisniewski's (pectoral) status is more favorable, leaving him a chance to play against Denver. Rookie Kevin Dotson replaced Wisniewski in the fourth quarter on Monday night, while Chuks Okorafor took over for Banner and will start at right tackle against the Broncos this Sunday. David DeCastro (knee) has been out for more than two weeks after aggravating his injury in training camp, so Pittsburgh's offensive line is hurting early in the season.
The initial diagnosis for Pittsburgh Steelers right tackle Zach Banner's knee injury is a torn ACL, according to a source informed of the situation. Banner will undergo an MRI exam to verify the potential season-ending injury. He was injured late in the 26-16 win over the Giants on Monday night. Banner was the starting right tackle and was in his second season with the team. Chukwuma Okorafor is listed as Banner's backup at right tackle on the depth chart. It's bad news for the Steelers offensive line early in the season, especially with running back James Conner (ankle) suffering an injury in the season opener as well.
Zach Banner, Chukwuma Okorafor To Compete At Right Tackle
Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Zach Banner and Chukwuma Okorafor will battle for the right tackle spot in training camp, with Matt Feiler starting camp at left guard, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. However, the Steelers could move Feiler back to right tackle and Stefen Wisniewski to left guard if they aren't comfortable with the combination of Banner and Okorafor at right tackle. Feiler or Wisniewski have big shoes to fill in trying to replace retired All-Pro Ramon Foster at left guard this year. Okorafor, just 22 years old, should have a leg up on the journeyman Banner for the right tackle gig.
