Franchy Cordero, Albert Abreu Sign With NPB's Seibu Lions
Free agent outfielder Franchy Cordero and free agent reliever Albert Abreu have both signed in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league with the Seibu Lions. Cordero slugged eight home runs in just 24 games for the Yankees in the 2023 season but also hit just .188 with a 35.2% K% across 71 trips to the plate in the majors a season ago. He is the owner of a career .217 average with 27 HR and 13 stolen bases across 797 trips to the plate in parts of seven seasons between the Padres, Royals, Red Sox, and Yankees. Abreu, 28, also spent the 2023 season with the Yankees, working to a 4.73 ERA across 45 relief outings. The right-hander owns a 4.58 ERA across 108 MLB appearances between the Yankees, Rangers, and Royals.
The New York Yankees claimed right-hander Albert Abreu off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday, according to sources. Abreu recently had been designated for assignment by the Royals after he allowed two earned runs on six hits while walking four and striking out three in 4 1/3 relief innings for KC. The 26-year-old also allowed three earned runs while walking 12 and striking out nine in 8 2/3 relief innings for the Texas Rangers earlier this season. Abreu will be joining the Yankees for the second time in his career after spending the previous two seasons in the Bronx. In those two seasons, Abreu had a 5.68 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 37 K's and 21 walks in 38 relief innings.
The Kansas City Royals acquired right-hander Albert Abreu from the Texas Rangers on Thursday in exchange for right-hander Yohanse Morel. Abreu will be added to the Royals 40-man roster in a corresponding move announced at a later date. The Rangers designated Abreu for assignment earlier in the week after he allowed three earned runs on four hits while striking out nine and walking 12 in just 8 2/3 relief appearances at the major league level this year. The 26-year-old has walked 15.8% of the hitters he's faced in 46 2/3 relief innings in the majors over the last three seasons, so he might not last with the Royals for long if that continues.
New York Yankees right-hander Albert Abreu has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as part of a corresponding move after both Zack Britton and Wandy Peralta were placed on the injured list. The 25-year-old reliever has a 2.08 ERA, 0.69 WHIP, and 10 strikeouts over 8 2/3 innings of relief with the Yankees this year. He shouldn't see much high-leverage work and can be left on the waiver wire.
The New York Yankees have called up outfielder Estevan Florial and pitcher Albert Abreu from Triple-A. The call-ups are in response to the team placing both Corey Kluber (shoulder) and Luke Voit (oblique) on the 10-day injured list. Abreu will work out of the bullpen for the team, while Florial could see a decent amount of playing time due to the multitude of injuries the team has sustained in the outfield. Florial has a .203/.295/.536 slash line over 17 games split between Double-A and Triple-A this year. He made his MLB debut back in 2020, appearing in just one game and going 1-for-3 with a single and two strikeouts. He's worth keeping an eye on for fantasy managers in deep leagues and AL-only leagues. If he can produce for the Yankees, he may wrestle playing time away from Brett Gardner or Clint Frazier.
New York Yankees relief pitcher Albert Abreu was optioned to the team's alternate site following Wednesday's game, the team announced on Twitter. Abreu has appeared in two games this season, allowing one run on two walks with three strikeouts in two innings of work. Abreu has shown he can be a high-strikeout starting pitcher in the minors, with a career 23.5 percent strikeout rate over six seasons in the Yankees and Astros farm systems.
New York Yankees relief pitcher Albert Abreu pitched well on Sunday, shutting out the Rays over a clean inning with a pair of strikeouts. Although Abreu's command appeared to be shaky, he showcased the high-90s mph fastball and strong slider that made him a top-100 prospect in 2018. As exciting as Abreu's arsenal is when it's at its best, fantasy managers should expect Abreu to return to the alternate site sooner rather than later, and he's likely to be a non-factor in most fantasy leagues this season.
