Franchy Cordero, Albert Abreu Sign With NPB's Seibu Lions
Free agent outfielder Franchy Cordero and free agent reliever Albert Abreu have both signed in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league with the Seibu Lions. Cordero slugged eight home runs in just 24 games for the Yankees in the 2023 season but also hit just .188 with a 35.2% K% across 71 trips to the plate in the majors a season ago. He is the owner of a career .217 average with 27 HR and 13 stolen bases across 797 trips to the plate in parts of seven seasons between the Padres, Royals, Red Sox, and Yankees. Abreu, 28, also spent the 2023 season with the Yankees, working to a 4.73 ERA across 45 relief outings. The right-hander owns a 4.58 ERA across 108 MLB appearances between the Yankees, Rangers, and Royals.
Jake Bauers Goes On Injured List, Franchy Cordero Called Up
The New York Yankees placed outfielder Jake Bauers (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 6) on Friday with a left rotator-cuff contusion and recalled infielder/outfielder Franchy Cordero from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move. It's unknown how long Bauers will be out after injuring his left shoulder while diving for a ball in the outfield on Wednesday. The 27-year-old was seeing regular playing time in right field with Aaron Judge (toe) out and was hitting .224 with seven homers in 134 at-bats. Cordero could now see decent playing time in right for the Yanks until Judge is able to return. He's starting in right and batting ninth on Friday against Chicago Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon.
New York Yankees outfielder Franchy Cordero was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, according to MLB.com. The move comes amid the return of three Yankees from the injured list on Friday; Josh Donaldson (hamstring), Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring), and Tommy Kahnle (biceps). The 28-year-old has appeared in 19 games this season, hitting just .148 with four home runs, six runs, and 11 RBI. If fantasy managers were rostering Cordero, now is the time to drop him in all leagues.
Franchy Cordero Agrees To Big-League Deal With Yankees
Free-agent outfielder Franchy Cordero and the New York Yankees agreed on a split major-league deal on Wednesday, according to sources. The deal will pay him $1 million in the big leagues and $180,000 in the minors in 2023. Barring another move, Cordero would be on the team's Opening Day roster. Cordero hit over .400 in Grapefruit League action for the Baltimore Orioles, but he was released on Monday and now latches on with the Yankees. The 28-year-old left-handed-hitting Dominican spent last year with the Boston Red Sox, slashing .219/.300/.397 with a career-high eight home runs, 29 RBI, 36 runs scored and four steals in 84 games played. He has a career .221/.290/.386 slash line in six big-league seasons and will represent outfield depth for the Yanks this year. Cordero is probably only worth grabbing in AL-only affairs.
Boston Red Sox outfielder Franchy Cordero (ankle) jammed his right leg into the left field wall in the fifth inning of Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays and had to be carted off the field. The official diagnosis was a right ankle sprain. Skipper Alex Cora said Cordero will undergo an MRI exam on Tuesday to see if there's ligament damage. "In the beginning, it felt really bad, but as I was coming to the clubhouse it was feeling better," said Cordero. "At first, I felt it was something worse than it was." The 28-year-old went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts before departing, so it was a rough day for Cordero. He's unlikely to play on Tuesday, but it remains to be seen if he'll miss the rest of the season. With Triston Casas now on the major league roster, Cordero is unlikely to see regular playing time in Boston's outfield.
Boston Red Sox outfielder Franchy Cordero is starting in right field and is hitting leadoff for the first time this year on Wednesday against Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene. Cordero has gone 11-for-38 (.290) with two home runs and nine RBI in the last 14 days, and he's earned a look a top Boston's batting order. His slash line on the year is up to .260/.322/.442 with two homers, 12 RBI and 16 runs scored in 87 plate appearances. The 27-year-old Dominican has a tough matchup with the flame-throwing Greene on tap on Wednesday, but his fantasy stock is certainly rising, and he's in the midst of a six-game stretch that has seen him go 6-for-18 with a homer, two doubles and three RBI.
Boston Red Sox outfielder Franchy Cordero was the hero in the team's 8-4 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. Coming up to bat with two outs and the bases loaded in the 10th inning of a 4-4 tie, Cordero launched his first home run of the year. It was a walk-off grand slam, completing the team's four-game sweep of the Mariners. The homer was Cordero's only hit of the day as he went 1-for-5. He is now slashing .231/.305/.404 with four RBI and 11 runs over 18 games on the year.
Travis Shaw DFA'd, Franchy Cordero Joining Red Sox
Boston Red Sox designated infielder Travis Shaw for assignment on Friday and are calling up Franchy Cordero to take his place on the roster, according to multiple sources. The team is also expected to activate pitchers Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford from the restricted list. Shaw made the roster on a minor league deal, but has struggled since then. He is 0-for-19 with seven strikeouts this season, so it's not shocking to see the team deciding to make a change. Cordero willplay outfield and possibly some first base when Bobby Dalbec needs a break.
Boston Red Sox outfielder Franchy Cordero has played first base in two straight games for Triple-A Worcester. The 27-year-old is typically accustomed to playing left field, but the move to first base suggests that he could be called up to give the team an alternative to the struggling Bobby Dalbec. Cordero has been swinging a hot bat at Triple-A, slashing .296/.378/.535 with three home runs, eight doubles, 24 RBI and 13 runs over 19 games. Dalbec, meanwhile, has an ugly .154/.211/.246 slash line with just one home run over 18 games for the Red Sox this year.
Franchy Cordero Designated For Assignment On Thursday
The Boston Red Sox designated outfielder Franchy Cordero for assignment on Thursday. Boston needed the roster space to reinstate right-handed pitcher Phillips Valdez from the COVID-19 Related Injured List. Cordero was traded to Boston in February as part of the three-team trade that sent Andrew Benintendi to the Kansas City Royals. The former Kansas City outfielder hit .189 with a .237 on-base percentage, a home run, and a stolen base in 136 plate appearances for the Red Sox this past season.
