Alek Thomas, Jake McCarthy Could be Traded

Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte has been rumored as a trade candidate this offseason, but The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro thinks it's more likely that the team's trade options involve outfielders Alek Thomas and Jake McCarthy, who are both arbitration-eligible. If the D-backs trade one of Thomas or McCarthy away, they have options to replace them with the likes of Jorge Barrosa, Tim Tawa, Blaze Alexander, and potentially even Jordan Lawlar. For fantasy baseball purposes, McCarthy is the more attractive player, although he played in only 67 games in 2025 and hit .204 (42-for-206) with four home runs, 20 RBI, 18 runs scored, and six stolen bases in his fifth year in the league. If McCarthy were ever to win a full-time job in Arizona or elsewhere, though, his speed would make him interesting in fantasy. McCarthy had three straight 20-steal seasons from 2022-24.

Alek Thomas Goes on Bereavement List

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Friday that they placed outfielder Alek Thomas on the bereavement list and recalled outfielder Jorge Barrosa from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Thomas will most likely miss the entire weekend series in Pittsburgh at PNC Park against the Pirates. Jake McCarthy is making the start in center field and will hit seventh in Friday's series opener against Pirates right-hander Mike Burrows. The 25-year-old Thomas is most useful for his range and glove on defense in center field. In his fourth year with the D-backs, he's hit a middling .246/.294/.366 with a career-best .660 OPS, five home runs, 26 RBI, 33 runs scored and five stolen bases in 292 trips to the plate over 90 games. Although McCarthy has gone just 13-for-93 (.140) on the year, he has more offensive upside in fantasy than Thomas.

Pavin Smith, Alek Thomas Sitting Against Lefty

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielders Pavin Smith and Alek Thomas are both out on Wednesday against the hosting Toronto Blue Jays with a left-handed pitcher on the mound. Randal Grichuk is serving as the designated hitter and will bat sixth, while rookie Tim Tawa is starting in center field and batting eighth against Blue Jays left-hander Eric Lauer. Smith will grab some pine after starting each of the team's last nine games. In those nine contests, the 29-year-old lefty hitter went 5-for-25 (.200) with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored. Smith is hitting a solid .271 (48-for-177) but has contributed only five home runs, 18 RBI and 26 runs scored in 2025. Grichuk actually has reverse splits so far in 2025 and has gone just 16-for-73 (.219) with two of his three home runs and 19 strikeouts in 80 plate appearances against lefties. He has a hit and one RBI in four career at-bats against Lauer.

Alek Thomas Goes Yard and Swipes a Bag

Arizona Diamondbacks speedy outfielder Alek Thomas went 3-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk, a stolen base, and four total runs scored in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Mariners. It was quite the evening for Thomas, as he was active on the basepaths and blasted his third home run of the season. The home run came in the eighth inning with the Diamondbacks already up 9-3 in the contest. Thomas is enjoying a nice 2025 campaign, slashing .273/.315/.395 with 21 runs scored, 19 RBI, and four stolen bases. He has taken off in June, slashing .370/.393/.593. He seems to have an everyday role with the Diamondbacks, perhaps occasionally sitting against a left-handed pitcher, but the 25-year-old provides a lot of speed and good defense, making him an interesting player if he can continue to stay hot and get the opportunities. For now, he can remain on the waiver wire in most formats.

Alek Thomas Out on Monday Against Dodgers

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas will take the day off for Monday's series opener against the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Rookie Tim Tawa is manning center field and is batting seventh versus Dodgers right-hander Landon Knack. Thomas has become Arizona's regular center fielder so far in 2025, but he'll take a rest day to begin the week. The 25-year-old left-handed hitter is batting a solid .276 (34-for-123), but he lacks a lot of fantasy appeal with limited power and speed while posting only one home run, 15 RBI, 12 runs scored and three stolen bases for the Snakes. Tawa, a former 11th-rounder in 2021 out of Stanford, has supplied some power (five homers) with four stolen bases in 79 at-bats in NL-only leagues as a bench player for the Snake. He has never faced Knack in his young MLB career.

Alek Thomas Making The Start Over Jake McCarthy On Friday

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alex Thomas will make the start in center field over Jake McCarthy on Friday in the second game of the season against the visiting Chicago Cubs and right-hander Jameson Taillon at Chase Field. Thomas will bat seventh in the lineup. Thomas comes into 2025 looking to bounce back after a very disappointing 2024 campaign in which he played in only 39 games at the big-league level due to injuries and poor performance. In 103 plate appearances for Arizona, the 24-year-old left-handed hitter went just 18-for-95 (.189) with three home runs, 17 RBI and four stolen bases. Defense has been his calling card so far early in his career, but with a likely platoon role in Arizona's outfield this year, it's hard to get excited about him as anything more than outfield depth in NL-only leagues. Thomas is hitless in only two career at-bats against Taillon.

Alek Thomas Back From Minor-League Injured List

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas (oblique) was reinstated from the seven-day minor-league injured list at Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. In his return to the field with the Aces on Tuesday, Thomas went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. The 24-year-old has been out of action for the past month with a strained right oblique but is working his way back and could be able to rejoin the big-league roster before the end of the regular season at the end of September. If Thomas does rejoin the D-backs and they make the postseason, he'll likely be a bench player and potential late-game replacement for his defense in center field. Thomas has played in a career-low 37 games in Arizona in 2024 in his third year in the majors and has hit just .191 (18-for-94) with three homers, 17 RBI and four steals. Jake McCarthy has essentially taken over for Thomas at the big-league level.

Alek Thomas Sent To Triple-A

The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned outfielder Alek Thomas to Triple-A Reno following Tuesday night's game against the Colorado Rockies and recalled rookie infielder Blaze Alexander from Reno in a corresponding move on Wednesday. Thomas has missed a big chunk of this season due to injury and wasn't swinging the bat well enough upon his return to warrant a roster spot at the big-league level, despite his excellent glove work. The 24-year-old left-handed hitter has batted just .191 (18-for-94) this year with three home runs, 17 RBI and four stolen bases in 37 games played in his third year in Arizona. Thomas' demotion is good news for Jake McCarthy, who has become a lineup regular for the Snakes in a breakout year. Alexander, meanwhile could see some starts at second base, including on Wednesday, with Ketel Marte nursing a low-grade ankle sprain.

Joc Pederson, Alek Thomas Out On Monday

With a left-hander on the mound for Monday's contest against the hosting Cleveland Guardians, Arizona Diamondbacks outfielders Joc Pederson and Alek Thomas will both get the day off. Ketel Marte will serve as the designated hitter and will bat leadoff, while Jake McCarthy will start in center field and will hit sixth versus Guardians lefty Logan Allen. Kevin Newman draws into the lineup at the keystone and will hit eighth for the Snakes. Pederson only has seen 25 plate appearances against lefties in 2024, so fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised that he's not starting on Monday. Against righties, though, he's been solid, hitting .289 (69-for-239) with 16 of his 17 home runs on the year. Thomas has only been afforded 81 at-bats this year due to injuries and is hitting a lowly .210 (17-for-81) with three homers, 17 RBI and three steals. He's not an option for fantasy managers in mixed leagues.

Alek Thomas On The Bench Saturday

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's contest against the hosting Pittsburgh Pirates. The 24-year-old singled, walked, and drove in two runs during Friday's 9-8 win but will give way to Jake McCarthy for Saturday's contest. It has been another difficult season at the plate for Thomas as he has not only dealt with a hamstring injury but has also struggled at the plate. He is hitting just .208 with three homers, three stolen bases, and a .672 OPS across 83 trips to the plate. However, his .347 xwOBA is well beyond his .288 wOBA at the moment. While he hasn't provided much to fantasy managers this season, there is likely some positive regression to be had down the stretch.
