Jake McCarthy Offers Speed Off the Waiver Wire in Colorado

Colorado Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy missed some time recently due to an illness, but he has picked up where he left off at the plate and is starting to become a staple in the Rockies' lineup. The 28-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder has gone 5-for-13 with two runs scored in four games since returning from his illness, and he's slashing .289/.333/.444 with a .777 OPS, four home runs, 27 RBI, 11 stolen bases, and 24 runs scored across 60 games and 207 plate appearances in his first year in Denver in 2026. McCarthy has seen more regular playing time in Colorado in the last month with both Mickey Moniak (ankle) and Brenton Doyle (oblique) on the injured list, but even when they both return, it might be hard for manager Warren Schaefer to keep him out of the lineup with the way he's been swinging the bat. He has never had much power -- career high of eight home runs in 2024 with the Arizona Diamondbacks -- but if you need speed, McCarthy is your man off the waiver wire. He's rostered in only 11% of Yahoo leagues.

Jake McCarthy Returns From Illness on Monday

Colorado Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy (knee) is making the start in left field and will bat seventh for the Rockies in Monday's series opener at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs and left-hander Shota Imanaga, according to MLB.com. McCarthy missed the last five games while being under the weather, but he's feeling better now and is back in the starting nine to begin the week. The 28-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder has looked good so far in his first year with the Rockies, slashing .282/.326/.448, but fantasy managers setting DFS lineups will want to avoid him against a tough lefty. McCarthy doesn't have much pop (just four homers in 174 at-bats), but he has plenty of speed (11) for those in need of the stat in deeper mixed leagues. McCarthy has also produced 27 RBI and 22 runs scored in 2026. He has gone 12-for-37 (.324) with none of his four homers against lefties on the year, and he's hitless in just six career at-bats against Imanaga.

Jake McCarthy Remains Absent With Illness on Friday

Colorado Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy (illness) is still under the weather and is sitting out of the lineup for Friday's series opener in Las Vegas against the hosting Athletics, according to MLB.com. Troy Johnston is getting another start in right field and will hit fifth for the Rockies against rookie left-hander Gage Jump. McCarthy remains day-to-day with an illness and is missing his third straight game. Hopefully, he'll be feeling good enough to return to the starting nine for Game 2 of the series in Vegas on Saturday against the A's. The 28-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder has played well this year in his first season with the Rockies, slashing .282/.326/.448 with a .775 OPS, four home runs, 27 RBI, 22 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases in his 174 at-bats. McCarthy doesn't have much pop (even at Coors Field), but his speed on the base paths makes him useful as outfield depth in deeper leagues, especially while both Mickey Moniak (ankle) and Brenton Doyle (oblique) are on the injured list. He has gone 9-for-32 (.281) with a homer, three doubles, three RBI, four runs, and a steal in seven games so far in June.

Jake McCarthy Still Under the Weather on Thursday

Colorado Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy (illness) remains under the weather and is out of the starting lineup on Thursday in the series finale at Coors Field against the visiting Chicago Cubs, according to MLB.com. Troy Johnston is making another start in right field and will bat fifth against Cubs right-hander Edward Cabrera. McCarthy was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to illness and will miss a second straight contest. Fantasy managers will want to check back on Friday to see if he's feeling good enough to return to action for the series opener in Sacramento against the Athletics. The 28-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder has taken advantage of more playing time in the last month in Denver with both Mickey Moniak (ankle) and Brenton Doyle (oblique) on the injured list. The speedy outfielder is currently slashing .282/.326/.448 with four home runs, 27 RBI, 22 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases in his 174 at-bats in his first year in Colorado.

Jake McCarthy Scratched on Wednesday With Illness

Colorado Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy (illness) was scratched from the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the visiting Chicago Cubs at Coors Field due to an illness, according to the team. Troy Johnson will make the start in right field for the Rockies and will bat seventh against Cubs left-hander Shota Imanaga. McCarthy is under the weather, but he could be back in the lineup as soon as Thursday's series finale in Denver against Chicago. The 28-year-old speedy left-handed hitter has seen an increase in playing time in the past month with both Mickey Moniak (ankle) and Brenton Doyle (oblique) on the injured list, and he's taken advantage, hitting .282 (49-for-174) with four home runs, 27 RBI, 22 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases in 56 games in his first year with the Rockies. McCarthy has been especially hot recently, going 18-for-59 (.305) with two homers, four doubles, eight RBI, 10 runs, and two steals in 14 games since May 24. If you need speed in deeper leagues, McCarthy is worth a look off the waiver wire.

Jake McCarthy Emerging as a Deep-League Waiver-Wire Target

Across 110 plate appearances so far in 2026, Colorado Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy is hitting .289/.346/.464 with two home runs, 18 RBI, 10 runs scored, and eight stolen bases. With a 4.9% barrel rate and a 19.8% hard-hit rate, McCarthy is highly unlikely to provide fantasy managers with much power. The lefty swinger has also largely been utilized in a platoon role in Colorado, as he's logged just 14 plate appearances this season against same-handed pitching. However, Rockies outfielder Brenton Doyle (side) was forced to exit early from the team's game on Tuesday after an attempt to make a diving catch. Should Doyle require a trip to the injured list, McCarthy could shift into a true everyday role. Between his elite speed and the Rockies' hitter-friendly home environment at Coors Field, McCarthy profiles as a solid source of both batting average and stolen bases for fantasy managers. In deeper leagues, McCarthy could be a worthy under-the-radar outfielder to target on the waiver wire.

Jake McCarthy Could Start in Right Field for Rockies

The Denver Post's Kyle Newman writes that new Colorado Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy "could very well end up starting in right field" to begin the 2026 season over Mickey Moniak. McCarthy can play all three outfield spots and will be the fastest Rockies player with a sprint speed in the 99th percentile. The 28-year-old finished fourth in the National League Rookie of the Year voting back in 2022 and played in a career-high 142 games in 2024, but he dealt with injuries and slumped to the tune of a .204/.247/.345 slash line with a career-worst .591 OPS in 67 games (222 plate appearances) last year. McCarthy faces significant competition in Colorado's outfield, but if he bounces back, he could make the left-handed-hitting Moniak expendable. Speed is McCarthy's greatest asset, and although he doesn't have much power, he's a more intriguing bench stash in deeper fantasy leagues now that he's in Colorado.

Jake McCarthy Gets Traded to Rockies

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Jake McCarthy was traded to the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. In exchange, the D-Backs will receive right-handed pitcher Josh Grosz from Colorado. On paper, this seems like an ideal landing spot for the speedy outfielder. He figures to get a chance to play regularly and should be a strong fit in the outfield at Coors Field. McCarthy is looking to rebound after posting disappointing numbers with the D-Backs last season. In 2024, McCarthy slashed .285/.349/.400 with eight home runs, 56 RBI, and 25 steals in 142 games. He offers interesting late-round appeal with his above-average speed, and his power could see an uptick in Colorado. As for Grosz, he was traded to Colorado in the deal that sent Ryan McMahon to the New York Yankees. He only pitched in seven games for the Rockies' Single-A team last season. The walk numbers are concerning, but 135 strikeouts in 23 games (22 starts) is promising. He won't see the big leagues for a few years, but he offers decent upside.

Alek Thomas, Jake McCarthy Could be Traded

Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte has been rumored as a trade candidate this offseason, but The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro thinks it's more likely that the team's trade options involve outfielders Alek Thomas and Jake McCarthy, who are both arbitration-eligible. If the D-backs trade one of Thomas or McCarthy away, they have options to replace them with the likes of Jorge Barrosa, Tim Tawa, Blaze Alexander, and potentially even Jordan Lawlar. For fantasy baseball purposes, McCarthy is the more attractive player, although he played in only 67 games in 2025 and hit .204 (42-for-206) with four home runs, 20 RBI, 18 runs scored, and six stolen bases in his fifth year in the league. If McCarthy were ever to win a full-time job in Arizona or elsewhere, though, his speed would make him interesting in fantasy. McCarthy had three straight 20-steal seasons from 2022-24.

Jake McCarthy Sent To Triple-A

The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned center fielder Jake McCarthy to Triple-A Reno during their day off on Monday. Due to McCarthy's slow start to the 2025 season at the plate, Alek Thomas is now the team's go-to option in center field. The 27-year-old former first-rounder will surely be back up with the D-backs this year, but for now he'll head to the farm to work on his hitting after going 3-for-41 (.073) with a double, three RBI, one stolen base, two runs scored, four walks and six strikeouts in his first 14 games played for Arizona. Meanwhile, Thomas, who played in only 39 games in his third big-league season in 2024 due to injuries, has hit .283/.350/.415 with a career-best .765 OPS, three doubles, two triples, 10 RBI, three steals and seven runs scored in 17 games over his first 60 plate appearances. Thomas' stock in deep-mixed and NL-only leagues is certainly on the rise.
