Juan Mejia Blows First Save Opportunity, Falling Out of Favor in Rockies Bullpen?

Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever Juan Mejia blew his first save opportunity of the season in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the visiting Texas Rangers at Coors Field, allowing a hit and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning. The two runs that scored were charged to lefty Brennan Bernardino, who started the inning. It wasn't exactly the 25-year-old Dominican's fault, as he entered the contest in Denver with the bases loaded and one out. Mejia hasn't allowed an earned run in his last seven appearances since May 5, a span in which he has thrown 8 1/3 scoreless innings with three hits allowed, four walks, 11 strikeouts, two saves, one blown save, and a hold. Right-hander Antonio Senzatela should remain in the mix for saves in Colorado going forward, but Mejia's first blown save of the year on Tuesday shouldn't negatively impact his save chances in Colorado, and he's probably still the best option for saves with the Rockies for fantasy managers. In his second year with the Rockies, Mejia has a 3.80 ERA (3.36 FIP), 1.48 WHIP, a career-high three saves, 28 strikeouts, and 11 walks in 23 2/3 innings.

Rockies Turn to Juan Mejia for Third Save, Seeing Closer Value Increase?

Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Juan Mejia got the call in the ninth inning of a one-run game on Monday night and shut down the Rangers on one hit and one strikeout to earn his third save of the season. Former closer Victor Vodnik was charged with three runs after starting the eighth inning, but Brennan Bernardino was able to close out the frame with the Rockies still holding a one-run lead. Mejia and Antonio Senzatela will continue to share closing responsibilities in Colorado, although both were available on Monday and Mejia got the call, giving him a slight advantage at this point. Senzatela could also emerge as a trade candidate, giving Mejia more long-term upside as the potential full-time option. For now, Mejia is trending in the right direction and makes a solid addition if you need saves in deeper leagues.

Rockies Turn to Juan Mejia for Second Save, Seeing Value Increase in Deep Leagues

Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Juan Mejia earned his second save of the season on Friday night in Philadelphia, closing out the Phillies in the 11th inning after his team scored two runs in the top of the inning. Mejia allowed one hit and had one strikeout, fanning Kyle Schwarber and getting Bryce Harper to ground out to second to end the game. Mejia has a 4.66 ERA in his 16 games this season, racking up 25 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings. He has allowed zero runs in five of his last six appearances and remains the team's primary setup option in front of usual closer Victor Vodnik. Vodnik pitched two shutout innings in the ninth and 10th frames to earn the win on Friday, and he'll likely remain the team's primary closer. However, Mejia has been effective enough to be a deep-league sleeper and would potentially be the next arm up if Vodnik is unavailable.

Juan Mejia Earns First Career Save

Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Juan Mejia was asked to close down Sunday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It wasn't a pretty outing as Mejia allowed three straight hits to load up the bases. He gave up an earned run on a sacrifice fly, but was able to earn his first career save. Mejia normally doesn't pitch in the ninth inning, but Victor Vodnik was unavailable after pitching in four of the last five games. Mejia holds a 4.20 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and a 49/15 K/BB ratio this season with Colorado. He could be in the mix for saves, but probably isn't someone worth rostering in fantasy formats right now.

Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia Will Share the Closer Role in Colorado

Colorado Rockies relief pitchers Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia will share closing opportunities while Seth Halvorsen (elbow) is on the 15-day injured list, according to interim manager Warren Schaeffer. Both are 25-year-old righties, so there isn't an obvious split to target one over the other based on matchup. Vodnik has a 3.55 ERA and 4.05 FIP in 33 innings over his 34 appearances this season with 34 strikeouts. He had nine saves last year for the Rockies and has seven holds this year. Mejia has also appeared in 34 games this year and has a 4.05 ERA, 3.38 FIP, and 43 strikeouts in 40 innings. He does not have any saves in his major league career or even in Triple-A. However, he also has seven holds this season and had six saves in Double-A last year. Vodnik has slightly more experience, but Schaeffer could go to either option when the Rockies get a rare save situation.
