Victor Vodnik Allows Five Runs in Save Situation, Remains High-Risk Option for Saves

Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever Victor Vodnik was blown up by the San Diego Padres on Thursday at Coors Field in the ninth inning in an eventual 10-8 loss in the series finale. Vodnik had a rough day at the office, allowing five earned runs on four hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out two in two-thirds of an inning for his second loss of the season and his second blown save for the Rockies. After the rough outing, the 26-year-old former 14th-rounder by the Atlanta Braves in 2018 has an 0-2 record, 7.59 ERA (6.05 FIP), 2.16 WHIP, three saves, eight strikeouts, and six walks in 10 2/3 relief innings in 2026. He entered the contest in the ninth inning on Thursday with a three-run lead, but that cushion wasn't enough for Vodnik on this day. Fantasy managers were reminded that Vodnik is a high-risk option for saves on a bad team, and his struggles this year could lead to more save chances for both Seth Halvorsen and Jaden Hill in the near future. He's rostered in just 9% of Yahoo leagues at the moment.

Victor Vodnik a Name to Consider for Saves

Colorado Rockies closer Victor Vodnik has been solid so far this season and is a name to consider when searching the waiver wire for saves. The right-hander blew his first save opportunity of the season back on March 29, but made seven straight scoreless appearances after that, during which time he tallied three saves. His last outing did not go so well, allowing two earned runs on three hits, a walk, and a wild pitch, but thankfully, it was a non-save situation, and his job appears to be secure. With the Rockies showing some fight lately, including taking two of four from the mighty Dodgers, they certainly appear to be capable of winning more games than they did a season ago (.375 winning percentage compared to .265), which should mean more save chances for their closer. The 26-year-old is the owner of a 3.60 ERA, and while a WHIP of 1.80 and K-BB% of 2.1 percent are not fantasy-friendly, he does not appear to have competition for the role at the moment, and the 6-foot hurler can be found in over 90 percent of Yahoo! leagues.

Victor Vodnik the Favorite for Saves in Colorado?

Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever Victor Vodnik struck out the only batter he faced and nailed down the save in Monday night's Cactus League win over the Detroit Tigers, and manager Warren Schaefer hinted that it's something we could see more of going into the 2026 regular season, according to Steve Stockmar of MLB.com. "Also, Victor, we're gonna see a lot of that this year late in the game," Schaeffer said. It helps that last year's saves leader for the Rockies, Seth Halvoresen, isn't expected to make the Opening Day roster. In addition to Vodnik, Juan Mejia and Jimmy Herget could be options to see save chances for the Rockies in 2026. Even though Vodnik, 26, has struggled in spring training with a 15.43 ERA, five walks, and five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings pitched, he should have a leg up on save chances after recording 10 saves, a 3.02 ERA, and a 49:26 K:BB in 50 2/3 innings in 2025. Only fantasy managers desperate for saves in deeper leagues should seriously consider Vodnik or any other reliever in Colorado's bullpen.

Can Victor Vodnik Be a Late-Round Saves Source?

Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Victor Vodnik finished 2025 with 10 saves in his 52 appearances last season and is expected to start the year as the team's primary closer. He earned eight of those saves over his last 17 games, stretching from Aug. 12 through the end of the year. During that run, he had a 1.06 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 2.37 FIP with 14 strikeouts in 17 innings. Despite that promising finish, Vodnik has had a rough spring so far and has an ugly 27.00 ERA in his three games. He showed the potential to be a solid source of cheap saves, but he could be on a short leash if his struggles continue into the season. The Rockies also may not give him a ton of save opportunities after losing 119 games last season. If you're desperate for saves late in your draft, he is a viable option, but he is a high-risk pick as the No. 89 relief pitcher in RotoBaller's rankings.

Victor Vodnik Picks Up Another Save on Friday

Colorado Rockies reliever Victor Vodnik logged his fifth save of the year in a 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. The 25-year-old right-hander threw a perfect, 12-pitch ninth inning with two strikeouts to lock up his third save since Tuesday. Interim manager Warren Schaeffer said Vodnik and Juan Mejia would share closing duties when Seth Halvorsen went on the 15-day injured list Aug. 3, but Vodnik has recorded all of the Rockies' saves since then. Vodnik owns a respectable 3.62 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings, but he also carries a high WHIP (1.54) and an inflated walk rate (5.06 per nine).

Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia Will Share the Closer Role in Colorado

Colorado Rockies relief pitchers Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia will share closing opportunities while Seth Halvorsen (elbow) is on the 15-day injured list, according to interim manager Warren Schaeffer. Both are 25-year-old righties, so there isn't an obvious split to target one over the other based on matchup. Vodnik has a 3.55 ERA and 4.05 FIP in 33 innings over his 34 appearances this season with 34 strikeouts. He had nine saves last year for the Rockies and has seven holds this year. Mejia has also appeared in 34 games this year and has a 4.05 ERA, 3.38 FIP, and 43 strikeouts in 40 innings. He does not have any saves in his major league career or even in Triple-A. However, he also has seven holds this season and had six saves in Double-A last year. Vodnik has slightly more experience, but Schaeffer could go to either option when the Rockies get a rare save situation.

Rockies Willing to Listen to Offers for Victor Vodnik, Seth Halvorsen

The Colorado Rockies are willing to listen to trade offers for relievers Victor Vodnik and Seth Halvorsen, but the team has "high" asking prices for the two hard-throwing right-handers, according to Katie Woo and Will Sammon of The Athletic. Both Vodnik and Halvorsen are under affordable control for the next handful of years, which explains why the Rockies want to keep them and also why there's interest from elsewhere. Vodnik isn't due to reach free agency until after the 2029 campaign. The 25-year-old has put up a 3.00 ERA with 30 strikeouts and six holds over 30 innings this season, though he has succeeded despite issuing 17 walks. Halvorsen, also 25, is under wraps through 2030. Serving as the Rockies' primary closer this season, Halvorsen picked up his 10th save of the year on Friday with a 1-2-3 ninth inning in a 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Despite possessing elite velocity (his fastball averages 100.1 mph), Halvorsen has only managed a 4.89 ERA with 35:18 K:BB across 38 2/3 frames.

Victor Vodnik Earns Save on Friday

Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever Victor Vodnik notched his second save of the year in a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. Vodnik gave up a ninth-inning leadoff double to Santiago Espinal before settling down and striking out both TJ Friedl and Matt McLain swinging. After intentionally walking Elly De La Cruz to put the winning run on first base, Vodnik fanned Austin Hays to clinch a Colorado victory. The hard-throwing 25-year-old has now gone 11 straight appearances without allowing an earned run. Vodnik's ERA has fallen to 2.30 with 29 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings, though he has also issued a lofty 16 walks. The Rockies have given the majority of save opportunities to Seth Halvorsen, but he melted down in his previous outing and hasn't been particularly effective this year. Meanwhile, Zach Agnos hasn't done enough to take the job from Halvorsen. If he continues pitching well, Vodnik could be worth monitoring for fantasy managers in desperate need of saves.

Victor Vodnik Rejoins Rockies Bullpen

The Colorado Rockies reinstated right-handed reliever Victor Vodnik (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday and optioned right-handed reliever Angel Chivilli to Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move. Vodnik did not appear in Tuesday's contest against the Chicago Cubs and has been out over a month with inflammation in his right shoulder. The 25-year-old former 14th-round pick by the Atlanta Braves in 2018 returns to a 4.50 ERA (6.57 FIP) and 1.62 WHIP with eight strikeouts, one save and six walks in eight innings pitched. He is unlikely to be in the mix for saves on a historically bad Rockies team but should continue to serve in a high-leverage setup role in front of Zach Agnos and Seth Halvorsen. Vodnik has a career 4.68 ERA and 1.55 WHIP with 10 saves in just 90 1/3 innings pitched since debuting in 2023.

Victor Vodnik Throws Successful Live Batting Practice Session

Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever Victor Vodnik (shoulder) threw a successful live batting practice session on Monday and should progress to the next step in his rehab from inflammation in his right shoulder that landed him on the 15-day injured list on April 20, according to interim manager Warren Schaeffer. Barring a setback as the 25-year-old builds up his arm, he could return to Colorado's major-league bullpen later this month. His next step will likely be being cleared to start a minor-league rehab assignment. Before his shoulder injury, Vodnik had appeared in nine games in relief for the Rockies early in the 2025 season and had allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits (two homers) while walking six and striking out eight in eight innings pitched with one save. Vodnik had nine saves a year ago and will be a late-inning option for Colorado when he's back from the IL.
