Victor Vodnik Picks Up Another Save on Friday

Colorado Rockies reliever Victor Vodnik logged his fifth save of the year in a 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. The 25-year-old right-hander threw a perfect, 12-pitch ninth inning with two strikeouts to lock up his third save since Tuesday. Interim manager Warren Schaeffer said Vodnik and Juan Mejia would share closing duties when Seth Halvorsen went on the 15-day injured list Aug. 3, but Vodnik has recorded all of the Rockies' saves since then. Vodnik owns a respectable 3.62 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings, but he also carries a high WHIP (1.54) and an inflated walk rate (5.06 per nine).

Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia Will Share the Closer Role in Colorado

Colorado Rockies relief pitchers Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia will share closing opportunities while Seth Halvorsen (elbow) is on the 15-day injured list, according to interim manager Warren Schaeffer. Both are 25-year-old righties, so there isn't an obvious split to target one over the other based on matchup. Vodnik has a 3.55 ERA and 4.05 FIP in 33 innings over his 34 appearances this season with 34 strikeouts. He had nine saves last year for the Rockies and has seven holds this year. Mejia has also appeared in 34 games this year and has a 4.05 ERA, 3.38 FIP, and 43 strikeouts in 40 innings. He does not have any saves in his major league career or even in Triple-A. However, he also has seven holds this season and had six saves in Double-A last year. Vodnik has slightly more experience, but Schaeffer could go to either option when the Rockies get a rare save situation.

Rockies Willing to Listen to Offers for Victor Vodnik, Seth Halvorsen

The Colorado Rockies are willing to listen to trade offers for relievers Victor Vodnik and Seth Halvorsen, but the team has "high" asking prices for the two hard-throwing right-handers, according to Katie Woo and Will Sammon of The Athletic. Both Vodnik and Halvorsen are under affordable control for the next handful of years, which explains why the Rockies want to keep them and also why there's interest from elsewhere. Vodnik isn't due to reach free agency until after the 2029 campaign. The 25-year-old has put up a 3.00 ERA with 30 strikeouts and six holds over 30 innings this season, though he has succeeded despite issuing 17 walks. Halvorsen, also 25, is under wraps through 2030. Serving as the Rockies' primary closer this season, Halvorsen picked up his 10th save of the year on Friday with a 1-2-3 ninth inning in a 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Despite possessing elite velocity (his fastball averages 100.1 mph), Halvorsen has only managed a 4.89 ERA with 35:18 K:BB across 38 2/3 frames.

Victor Vodnik Earns Save on Friday

Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever Victor Vodnik notched his second save of the year in a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. Vodnik gave up a ninth-inning leadoff double to Santiago Espinal before settling down and striking out both TJ Friedl and Matt McLain swinging. After intentionally walking Elly De La Cruz to put the winning run on first base, Vodnik fanned Austin Hays to clinch a Colorado victory. The hard-throwing 25-year-old has now gone 11 straight appearances without allowing an earned run. Vodnik's ERA has fallen to 2.30 with 29 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings, though he has also issued a lofty 16 walks. The Rockies have given the majority of save opportunities to Seth Halvorsen, but he melted down in his previous outing and hasn't been particularly effective this year. Meanwhile, Zach Agnos hasn't done enough to take the job from Halvorsen. If he continues pitching well, Vodnik could be worth monitoring for fantasy managers in desperate need of saves.

Victor Vodnik Rejoins Rockies Bullpen

The Colorado Rockies reinstated right-handed reliever Victor Vodnik (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday and optioned right-handed reliever Angel Chivilli to Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move. Vodnik did not appear in Tuesday's contest against the Chicago Cubs and has been out over a month with inflammation in his right shoulder. The 25-year-old former 14th-round pick by the Atlanta Braves in 2018 returns to a 4.50 ERA (6.57 FIP) and 1.62 WHIP with eight strikeouts, one save and six walks in eight innings pitched. He is unlikely to be in the mix for saves on a historically bad Rockies team but should continue to serve in a high-leverage setup role in front of Zach Agnos and Seth Halvorsen. Vodnik has a career 4.68 ERA and 1.55 WHIP with 10 saves in just 90 1/3 innings pitched since debuting in 2023.

Victor Vodnik Throws Successful Live Batting Practice Session

Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever Victor Vodnik (shoulder) threw a successful live batting practice session on Monday and should progress to the next step in his rehab from inflammation in his right shoulder that landed him on the 15-day injured list on April 20, according to interim manager Warren Schaeffer. Barring a setback as the 25-year-old builds up his arm, he could return to Colorado's major-league bullpen later this month. His next step will likely be being cleared to start a minor-league rehab assignment. Before his shoulder injury, Vodnik had appeared in nine games in relief for the Rockies early in the 2025 season and had allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits (two homers) while walking six and striking out eight in eight innings pitched with one save. Vodnik had nine saves a year ago and will be a late-inning option for Colorado when he's back from the IL.

Victor Vodnik Resumes Playing Catch

Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever Victor Vodnik (shoulder) resumed playing catch on Saturday and said the inflammation in his right shoulder has calmed. Vodnik was placed on the injured list on April 20 with right-shoulder inflammation but is making progress and is expected to return to the major-league bullpen on May 5. Between now and then, the 25-year-old should be expected to go on a short minor-league rehab assignment to get back up to speed. The former 14th-round pick by the Atlanta Braves in 2018 appeared in nine games out of the bullpen for Colorado before his injury and allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking six and striking out eight in eight innings. Vodnik also recorded a save and also picked up nine saves in 15 chances a year ago. Given his lack of strikeout stuff and his inability to miss bats in 2024, Vodnik isn't a great option for fantasy managers speculating on saves.

Victor Vodnik Placed On 15-Day Injured List

The Colorado Rockies have placed right-handed pitcher Victor Vodnik (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list retroactive to April 17 due to right shoulder inflammation. Vodnik last appeared in a contest on April 16. Through the early part of the campaign, Vodnik has been deployed as a high-leverage arm in the Colorado bullpen. Across eight innings of work, the right-hander has held a 4.50 ERA with a 1.63 WHIP. Vodnik has tallied one save and held an 8:6 K:BB. He has generated a hefty 7.26 xERA with a .282 xBA, which suggests he should face some significant regression when he returns to the bump. In a corresponding move, the Rockies promoted right-handed pitching prospect Zach Agnos from Triple-A. While Vodnik is out, Seth Halvorsen should see most of the save opportunities.

Seth Halvorsen, Victor Vodnik Competing For Closer Role

Colorado Rockies relief pitchers Seth Halvorsen and Victor Vodnik are currently competing for the closer role during spring training. The bullpen was a big reason why the Rockies lost over 100 games last season. The organization is hopeful that some of their younger arms can take big steps forward in 2025. Vodnik might be the favorite for the closer role considering he took over the role for part of the season last year. He registered a 4.28 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 65/37 K/BB ratio across 64 games last season. He notched nine saves as well, which is decent considering the Rockies weren't winning a ton of games. Halvorsen has less MLB experience, but posted a 1.46 ERA and 0.81 WHIP across 12 games with the Rockies last season. Honestly, neither player will probably offer a ton of fantasy value unless the Rockies are able to find more success as a team in 2025.

Victor Vodnik Making Progress

Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever Victor Vodnik (biceps), who was placed on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 21 (retroactive to Aug. 19), threw a side session on Aug. 30. Manager Bud Black said Vodnik is scheduled for an "aggressive" side session on Tuesday in Atlanta. Depending on how that session goes, Black said the Rockies will either activate Vodnik from the IL or send him on a short minor-league rehab assignment. The 24-year-old's return to the back end of Colorado's bullpen could happen soon, barring any setbacks. When he does return, he could at least be sharing closing duties with Tyler Kinley, who has taken over as Colorado's closer with Vodnik injured. In his second year in the big leagues, Vodnik has an ERA above 4.00 but has also picked up his first nine career saves for a bad Rockies team. Fantasy managers looking for saves down the stretch in deeper leagues shouldn't forget about him.
