Colorado Rockies pitching prospect Seth Halvorsen allowed five earned runs on Tuesday afternoon. Halvorsen was only able to get two outs. He allowed three hits and served up two free passes. Halvorsen is competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster. However, this poor showing could put him in danger of opening the season in the minor leagues. Last summer, Halvorsen made his MLB debut and tossed 12 1/3 innings to the tune of a 1.46 ERA with a 0.81 WHIP. He tallied two saves and generated an elite .196 xBA. Earlier in the season, the 25-year-old logged 44 1/3 innings across Double and Triple-A and posted a 4.47 ERA with a 1.47 WHIP. He tallied 56 strikeouts while serving up 23 walks. If he were to open the season in the minor leagues, Victor Vodnik and Tyler Kinley could see more save opportunities.
Seth Halvorsen, Victor Vodnik Competing For Closer Role
Colorado Rockies relief pitchers Seth Halvorsen and Victor Vodnik are currently competing for the closer role during spring training. The bullpen was a big reason why the Rockies lost over 100 games last season. The organization is hopeful that some of their younger arms can take big steps forward in 2025. Vodnik might be the favorite for the closer role considering he took over the role for part of the season last year. He registered a 4.28 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 65/37 K/BB ratio across 64 games last season. He notched nine saves as well, which is decent considering the Rockies weren't winning a ton of games. Halvorsen has less MLB experience, but posted a 1.46 ERA and 0.81 WHIP across 12 games with the Rockies last season. Honestly, neither player will probably offer a ton of fantasy value unless the Rockies are able to find more success as a team in 2025.
The Denver Post's Patrick Saunders writes that Colorado Rockies right-hander Seth Halvorsen is in the mix for saves in 2025. Tyler Kinley is believed to be the favorite for saves in Colorado to open the season because of the experience factor alone, but Halvorsen should be in the mix as well after making his major-league debut last year and pitching to a nice 1.46 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, his first two career saves, 13 strikeouts and two walks in the small sample size of 12 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old struck out 56 batters in 44 1/3 innings at Double-A and Triple-A, too, before getting called up. The former seventh-rounder out of the University of Tennessee in 2023 features a triple-digit fastball, splitter and slider, all of which generate plenty of whiffs. Walks could be an issue, but Halvorsen's upside makes him intriguing for saves speculators in deeper fantasy leagues.
Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Seth Halvorsen picked up his second save of the season on Thursday, shutting down the St. Louis Cardinals and preserving a 10-8 win. Halvorsen allowed a hit and struck out one in his inning of work. The 24-year-old has now gotten the Rockies' last three save opportunities, converting two of them. It appears the team wants to try the youngster out and see what they have headed into next year. Nothing is ever certain with the Rockies, especially with pitchers, but he is probably the favorite for saves heading into 2025. He could be a good late-round flier for those looking for cheap save sources.
