Yoshinobu Yamamoto News
Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto tossed a gem on Thursday, working six shutout innings on four hits and just one walk while punching out seven as part of a narrow 2-1 win over the hosting Washington Nationals. After allowing five earned runs in his MLB debut against the San Diego Padres on March 21, the 25-year-old has now allowed a total of just six earned runs over his last five starts. As a result, he has managed to lower his ERA to 3.54 through six starts with 37 strikeouts against just six walks across 28 innings of work, going 2-1 in that time. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday in Arizona to take on the D-backs in a key NL West clash.
After getting roughed up in his first start during the Seoul Series against the Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto bounced back nicely in Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Cardinals. Yamamoto came out firing, striking out the first batter of the game on three pitches, proceeded to strike out the side, and ended up tossing five innings of scoreless baseball. He allowed just two hits in the outing, didn't walk a batter, and struck out five. Now that's what the Dodgers expected when they signed the 25-year-old in the offseason. His next start lines up with the Chicago Cubs in Wrigley.
Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto only lasted one inning in his regular season debut versus the San Diego Padres on Thursday. Yamamoto was hit hard and allowed four hits, five runs and one walk, but did record two strikeouts. The 25-year-old out of Japan came over with huge expectations after signing a 12-year, $325 million contract this offseason. Although it is still plenty early to write the book on the righty, he also struggled mightily in the Spring Training to the tune of an ugly 8.38 ERA, but had 14 strikeouts over 9 2/3 innings. The strikeouts have been about the only thing going for Yamamoto in his young career, but he was one of the highest touted pitchers to come over from overseas to the MLB and the potential is certainly there for him to turn things around. Despite the unfavorable results early on, he might make for a good buy-low option to acquire from managers that have already hit the panic button.

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto was the best pitcher in the NPB for several years and progressively got better into 2023. In 171 innings last season, Yamamoto posted a 1.16 ERA with 176 strikeouts and just 28 walks. That follows up a 193-inning season in 2022 in which he posted a 1.68 ERA and struck out 205 batters. The dominant performance landed him the largest contract in MLB history for a pitcher (not including Ohtani) as the Dodgers signed him to a 12-year, $325 million contract. The question now is, can he live up to that contract? The results should have no problem translating to Major League Baseball. Yamamoto features a fastball between 93 and 96 mph and has topped at 99. He has stellar command and is an excellent athlete on the mound, which we love to see with pitchers. He mixes in a beautiful curve, a cutter, and a powerful splitter. The splitter is his most used pitch. Yamamoto is one of my favorite arms to invest in, as there is a possibility he comes over and immediately becomes one of the best pitchers in the game, and his ADP does not require you to pay up significantly.
