The Milwaukee Brewers have reportedly signed relief pitcher Alex Claudio to a minor-league deal, per a tweet from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Todd Rosiak on Tuesday. Claudio has pitched to a 3.60 ERA and a 3.79 FIP in 347 2/3 career innings at the major-league level. He appeared in three games for the New York Mets during the 2022 season, allowing a hit and two walks in 3 1/3 innings of work while striking out a pair of batters. The veteran will provide the Brewers with some additional bullpen depth heading into next season.
Texas Rangers relief pitcher Alex Claudio (ankle) has been activated from the disabled list. He ended up just missing the minimum amount of time with a left ankle sprain. Claudio has pitched to a 4.32 ERA and a 23/7 K/BB ratio in 2018. For now, Claudio's fantasy value is limited as a middle reliever. However, there's a chance that current closer Keone Kela is moved prior to the deadline. Claudio held a 2.50 ERA and a 56/15 K/BB ratio with 11 saves in 2017. If he is promoted to closer, he would become an immediate pickup. If trade talks on Kela become stronger, Claudio would be worth a speculative add in all leagues.
Texas Rangers relief pitcher Alex Claudio has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, due to a sprained left ankle. Claudio has been a relatively minor part of the Rangers bullpen this season, and has not had a great deal of success. So far in 38 appearances, Claudio has thrown 41 2/3 innings, with a 4.32 ERA, 23 strikeouts and a save. This move to the DL should not have much effect for fantasy as Claudio did not have a major role within the Rangers bullpen, and he has not provided much upside when he has been on the mound.
Texas Rangers reliever Alex Claudio induced a 10th-inning ground-ball out to seal his first save of 2018. The righty was only asked to handle one batter, Josh Reddick, and came on with men on first and second. Claudio looked sharp and Reddick meekly tapped the ball up the line to a waiting Ronald Guzman, sealing the comeback win for the Rangers. Unfortunately for Claudio owners, this doesn't appear to be indicative of anything other than that he is the clear No. 2 option for the ninth inning behind closer Keone Kela, who pitched a scoreless ninth to keep the game tied. Claudio is worth owning in holds leagues and as a speculative option for saves in the future, but Kela has looked quite good over the first couple of weeks.
Alex Claudio Still Listed Atop Bullpen Depth Chart
With no official announcement and plenty of scuttlebutt to sort through, it's worth noting that the official Texas Rangers MLB.com website currently lists reliever Alex Claudio on top of the bullpen depth chart. Every outlet has their own opinion, and it's not surprising that the 26-year-old isn't atop the wish list. Claudio brings a boring, albeit effective, skill set with little to offer in terms of strikeouts but good control. The guy gets outs, and his spring training performance did little to dispel the notion. He actually struck out nine hitters across nine innings, and with no formal announcement in favor of Keone Kela, Matt Bush or Jose Leclerc, it is best to assume that Claudio will open the season in the ninth inning.
Jose LeClerc Picks Up Save, Unlikely To Supplant Alex Claudio
Jose LeClerc picked up his second save of the season against the Rays on Sunday, striking out two and walking two in an inning of work. While the Rangers bullpen may be in flux at the moment, the fact that LeClerc picked up the save is not necessarily an indictment of Alex Claudio, who had pitched 3.1 innings over the previous two days. LeClerc was the first alternate to Claudio, however, which may indicate that he is next in line for the spot.
Alex Claudio Picks Up Save; Worth A Look In All Formats
Rangers relief pitcher Alex Claudio picked up his second save of the season Friday against the Royals, tossing a clean inning with a strikeout. Claudio has been one of the most consistent performers in the Texas bullpen this season, notching a 2.70 ERA with a 1.09 WHIP over 46 2/3 innings. The only real caveat here is that Claudio is a lefty, and we have seen managers get gunshy when it comes to sending a bad platoon matchup out with a slim lead in the ninth inning. Still, if Claudio can pick up some steam he may take the job outright, despite the impending return of Keone Kela from the disabled list.
