Amir Garrett Working On Improving His Fastball

Cincinnati Reds reliever Amir Garrett is working on improving his four-seam fastball this spring. Already armed with an elite slider, Garrett is looking to add another wipeout pitch to his arsenal as he attempts to ascend to elite-reliever status in the league. According to Statcast, Garrett notched 68 strikeouts with his slider last season, compared to just six with his four-seam fastball. Garrett told reporters, "I want to have my fastball to be able to put somebody away." An improved fastball will help Garrett's slider become even more effective when he's on the mound. While he's currently blocked by incumbent closer Raisel Iglesias, Garrett is shaping up as Cincy's closer of the future and he could get a crack at the role in 2020 if Iglesias falters. For now, Garrett has plenty of fantasy value in leagues that count holds+saves as a category.

Amir Garrett To Make Rehab Appearance Friday

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Amir Garrett (left lat strain) has been on the Injured List since July 3, but after throwing a live batting practice session this week, he's set for a rehab appearance at Triple-A on Friday. Garrett has had a fantastic season as a setup man for the Reds. He has a 1.70 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 14 holds. His 35.3% strikeout rate and 2.6% barrel rate rank amongst the top 5% in the league. He should be owned in all leagues where elite setup men and holds specialists are highly coveted as he's likely to return to the Reds within the next week or so, assuming he doesn't have any setbacks.

Amir Garrett Placed On Injured List

The Cincinnati Reds placed relief pitcher Amir Garrett (left lat strain) on the 10-day Injured List on Thursday. Garrett leads all Reds pitchers in appearances this year with 42. He's had an outstanding season with a 1.70 ERA and 14 holds. His 35.3% strikeout rate ranks amongst the top five percent in the league. While he's out, fellow set-up men Michael Lorenzen and David Hernandez will likely see an increase in usage. Neither has had a great year, but Hernandez has 11 holds on the season and figures to have more opportunities to increase that number while Garrett is out.
