Shortstop Andrelton Simmons officially announced his retirement from professional baseball on Thursday. Simmons wraps up a lengthy MLB career after spending 11 seasons with the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels, Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs. The 34-year-old last played in the majors with the Cubs in 2022, when he went 13-for-75 (.173) with no home runs, seven RBI and four steals in 34 games. The four-time Gold Glover began his career in 2012 with the Braves and spent the first four seasons of his career in Atlanta. Simmons was mostly a glove-first player and didn't have much power at the position, never reaching the 20-homer plateau. He finishes his 11-year career with a .263/.312/.366 slash line, 70 home runs, 444 RBI and 72 stolen bases in 1,225 regular season games.
Chicago Cubs shortstop Andrelton Simmons was granted his unconditional release on Sunday after being designated for assignment on Saturday. The 32-year-old could never really get going this year, posting an ugly .177/.244/.187 batting line to go along with seven RBI and four stolen bases over 75 at-bats with the Cubbies. There's a chance another club signs him down the stretch but he doesn't offer any fantasy value at this stage of his career.
Chicago Cubs shortstop Andrelton Simmons (shoulder) was reinstated from the injured list on Saturday and then designated for assignment. Simmons, always a standout with his leather at the 6, was hitting just .173/.244/.187 with no home runs, seven RBI, eight runs scored and four stolen bases in 85 plate appearances over 34 games for the Cubbies before his injury. The 31-year-old had been on the injured list since July 11. If he's not claimed off waivers by another club, Chicago can return him to their organization in the minor leagues. The Cubs will move forward with youngster Nico Hoerner at the position. Even if Simmons latches on with another team and is on the major league roster, he's miles away from fantasy relevance.
Frank Schwindel Activated, Andrelton Simmons To IL
The Chicago Cubs activated first baseman Frank Schwindel (back) from the injured list on Thursday and placed shortstop Andrelton Simmons (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain in a corresponding move. Simmons' injured list placement is retroactive to July 11. Schwindel will return to a .237/.282/.386 slash line with eight home runs, 33 RBI and 27 runs scored in 228 at-bats, but he's not in the starting lineup on Thursday against the New York Mets. Simmons has played sparingly of late and won't be able to return until the start of the second half of the season on July 22. The glove-first 32-year-old has yet to clear the fences in 2022 and has gone just 13-for-75 (.173) with seven RBI and four stolen bases in 34 games for Chicago.
Andrelton Simmons Getting Closer To Rehab Assignment
Chicago Cubs shortstop Andrelton Simmons (shoulder) is scheduled to face live pitching on Tuesday in Arizona, and he's likely to go on a minor league rehab assignment soon. Simmons remains on a throwing program and has reported feeling around "85-90 percent" with his arm, according to manager David Ross. "I get video of him pretty regularly," Ross said on April 15. "Looks good. Throwing's going well. Ground balls are going well. He feels good. He feels like he's at 85 percent with the arm. So, I don't think he's that far away. It's just getting back to the swings." Until Simmons returns, Nico Hoerner will continue to be the Cubs regular shortstop.
Chicago Cubs shortstop Andrelton Simmons (shoulder), who is dealing with right shoulder soreness, is expected to throw in the next day or two. Simmons was scratched from the Cactus League lineup on Saturday, but his injury doesn't appear to be serious enough to endanger his status for Opening Day in early April. The 32-year-old could be splitting time at the 6 with Nico Hoerner this year in his first year in Chicago. Simmons is a defense-first player, giving him very little fantasy appeal in deep mixed and NL-only leagues as middle infield depth. He hit just .223/.283/.274 with three home runs, 31 RBI and 37 runs scored in 131 games in his lone season in Minnesota last year, and Simmons has only reached double digits in home runs three times in his 10-year career.
Chicago Cubs shortstop Andrelton Simmons (shoulder) is "dealing with right shoulder soreness," according to The Chicago Tribune's Meghan Montemurro. Also per Montemurro, the shortstop's "progress has been slowed since he reported to camp." Simmons joined the Cubs as a free agent after spending last season with the Minnesota Twins. The veteran hit .223 with a .283 on-base percentage, three home runs and a stolen base in 451 plate appearances with Minnesota. Simmons looks set to split time with Nico Hoerner at shortstop this season for Chicago. He's probably only an option for fantasy managers in deeper leagues as a defense-first player.
The Chicago Cubs signed free-agent shortstop Andrelton Simmons to a one-year deal worth $4 million plus incentives on Friday. Simmons is a glove-first commodity and isn't much to look at from a fantasy perspective. The 32-year-old veteran slashed .223/.283/.274 with three home runs, 37 runs and 31 RBI over 131 games for the Minnesota Twins last year. Simmons won't be guaranteed everyday playing in 2022, either, with youngster Nico Hoerner emerging in the Cubs infield. In 10 big-league seasons, Simmons has never hit more than 17 home runs, which came all the way back in 2013 in his second MLB season with the Atlanta Braves. At a fantasy position that is ripe with power bats, Simmons doesn't hold a candle to the upper echelon at SS.
Yankees Show Interest In Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Andrelton Simmons
The New York Yankees have expressed interest in a trade for Texas Rangers shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The slick fielder may be expendable now that Texas has added both Marcus Semien and Corey Seager in free agency. New York has also been connected to free agent shortstop Andrelton Simmons. The Yankees had been speculated as a potential landing spot for one of the top free agent shortstops, of which Carlos Correa, Trevor Story, and Chris Taylor remain, but it now appears they will not make such a splash unless contract demands decrease. Prospects Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza lurk in the minors as potential shortstops of the future, and Gio Urshela and Gleyber Torres remain fallback options on the Yankees roster.
Minnesota Twins shortstop Andrelton Simmons went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in Thursday's loss to the Chicago White Sox. Simmons was part of a strong fifth inning for the Twins, as his 102.8 MPH double scored Gilberto Celestino to make it a 3-2 game. The veteran shortstop is now 5-for-15 with a home run, double, three RBI, and six runs scored over his last five games. Simmons should only be considered n the deepest of formats, considering his lack of power and low batting average.
