Anthony DeSclafani Goes on Injured List With Thumb Inflammation

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (thumb) on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with right-thumb inflammation and recalled right-hander Casey Kelly from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move, according to Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. The veteran DeSclafani has made only 11 appearances (four starts) for the Snakes in 2025 after not pitching at all in the big leagues in 2024. The 35-year-old recently moved to Arizona's starting rotation after they traded right-hander Merrill Kelly away at the July 31 deadline. He didn't go deep in his last two starts against the Padres and Rangers but was decent, giving up only two runs while fanning seven in 7 1/3 innings pitched. DeSclafani will now miss at least the next two weeks, and it's unclear who might take his rotation spot in the desert.

Anthony DeSclafani Starting Against A's

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Anthony DeSclafani is starting the series opener on Friday on the road in Sacramento against the Athletics following Thursday's trade deadline. Right-hander Zac Gallen will take the mound on Saturday, and left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez will start the series finale on Sunday. This will only be DeSclafani's second start of the year, and first since July 6. The 35-year-old veteran has thrown at least three innings in each of his four appearances and has pitched to a 3.86 ERA and 1.07 WHIP while striking out 24 and walking six in 23 1/3 innings since joining Arizona in mid-June. DeSclafani won't be a very promising fantasy streamer against the A's on Friday, but if he looks good, he could stick around in the D-backs' starting rotation after the club traded away right-hander Merrill Kelly on Thursday.

Anthony DeSclafani Joining Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed right-hander Anthony DeSclafani to a one-year deal on Sunday. DeSclafani recently opted out of his deal with the New York Yankees earlier in the week. The 35-year-old has quickly found a new home after making five starts in Triple-A with the Yankees organization. DeSclafani last pitched in the MLB in 2023 with the San Francisco Giants. He posted a 4.88 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 79/20 K/BB ratio across 19 appearances (18 starts) with the Giants in 2023. DeSclafani has a 4.20 ERA across 180 big league outings in his nine-year career. It's unlikely that DeSclafani will be a big difference maker, but at worst he's decent organizational depth.

Anthony DeSclafani Undergoes Season-Ending Flexor Tendon Surgery

Minnesota Twins right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (forearm) has undergone flexor tendon surgery that will end his season before it begins. The veteran was recently placed on the 60-day injured list but will now look ahead to the 2025 campaign. The veteran went from the Giants to the Mariners in the Robbie Ray trade this winter before moving to the Twins in a trade that saw long-time Twin Jorge Polanco head to the M's. Originally slated for long-relief work and starting pitching depth with the Twins in 2024, DeSclafani posted a 4.88 ERA across 19 outings (18 starts) and 99 2/3 innings of work with the Giants last season and owns a career 4.20 ERA in 942 2/3 innings of work, most of which came as a starter.

Anthony DeSclafani Goes On 60-Day Injured List

The Minnesota Twins placed right-handers Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) and Josh Winder (shoulder) on the 60-day injured list on Thursday. The Twins also put right-handers Jhoan Duran (oblique), Josh Staumont (calf), Justin Topa (knee) and Zack Weiss (shoulder) and left-hander Caleb Thielbar (hamstring) on the 15-day IL to open the year. DeSclafani is dealing with a right-elbow strain and won't be an option for the back end of Minnesota's starting rotation for at least the first two months of the 2024 season. The 33-year-old was acquired in an offseason trade from the Seattle Mariners in January. He went 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 20 walks and 79 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings for the San Francisco Giants in 2023. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues can leave him to the waiver wire.

Anthony DeSclafani To Begin Season On Injured List

Minnesota Twins right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (elbow/forearm) will begin the season on the injured list. He will visit Dr. Keith Meister to evaluate the next steps on his ailing right elbow. The right-hander was shut down by the team early in the spring but has recently thrown bullpen sessions. He has yet to appear in a Cactus League game to this point, however. The veteran was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Mariners this offseason after tossing a 4.88 ERA across 19 outings (18 starts) with the Giants in the 2023 season. He was involved in a deal for Mariners left-hander Robbie Ray before being dealt to Minnesota in a trade that saw Jorge Polanco head to the Mariners.

Anthony DeSclafani Throws Bullpen Monday

Minnesota Twins right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) threw a bullpen session at camp on Monday as he continues to ramp up after the Twins shut him down at the starting of spring training due to right-elbow soreness. Minnesota is justified in wanting to slow the 33-year-old down in camp after DeSclafani missed time in 2023 due to a flexor strain in his right arm. However, the Twins are still hopeful that he can fill up a spot at the back of the starting rotation to begin the 2024 regular season. Fantasy managers shouldn't really be interested in DeSclafani after he went 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA (4.35 FIP) and 1.25 WHIP with 20 walks and only 79 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings over 19 outings (18 starts) for the Giants last year. He already didn't miss many bats to begin with, and now he's an injury concern.

Anthony DeSclafani Delayed In Camp

Minnesota Twins pitchers Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) and Caleb Thielbar (hamstring) have been delayed in camp but are ramping up their throwing. Trainer Nick Paparesta said that both pitchers still have time to be ready for Opening Day. DeSclafani is dealing with right-elbow soreness, while Thielbar is dealing with a left-hamstring strain. DeSclafani, 33, was acquired in an offseason trade with the Mariners. It's a troubling sign he's hurt again after missing most of last year due to a flexor issue in his arm. In his 19 outings (18 starts) for the Giants in 2023, DeSclafani went 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 79 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings. His injury in camp could make Louie Varland the favorite for Minnesota's final rotation spot to open the year.

Josh Staumont, Anthony DeSclafani Full-Go In Spring Training

New Minnesota Twins pitchers Josh Staumont (shoulder) and Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) have both been throwing for months after ending last year on the injured list and are full-go entering spring training. Staumont had thoracic outlet syndrome surgery last July but should be good to go for Opening Day with his new club. The 30-year-old could struggle to be effective after the surgery, though, especially since he hasn't very good to begin with the last two years for the Kansas City Royals (6.09 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 57 2/3 innings). DeSclafani made just 18 starts with the San Francisco Giants in 2023 due to a right flexor strain. The 33-year-old went 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 79 K's in 99 2/3 innings last year. DeSclafani will be competing for the fifth spot in Minnesota's starting rotation in camp.

Anthony DeSclafani, Justin Topa Traded To Twins

The Minnesota Twins acquired right-handers Anthony DeSclafani and Justin Topa, along with prospects Gabriel Gonzalez and right-hander Darren Bowen, in a four-player package from the Seattle Mariners on Monday in exchange for second baseman Jorge Polanco, according to sources. Cash is also believed to be involved in the deal. DeSclafani and outfielder Mitch Haniger were acquired by the M's from the Giants for lefty Robbie Ray earlier this offseason. The 33-year-old made only 19 starts in 2023 and may not be ready for the start of the 2024 season due to a right flexor strain. He'll provide depth for the Twins' rotation when he's ready. Topa, 32, had a 2.61 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 61 K's in 69 innings over a career-high 75 appearances for Seattle in 2023. He should be tasked with a high-leverage role in the back of Minnesota's bullpen. Gonzalez, 20, made it to Single-A Modesto in 2023 and has some real promise at the plate as an outfielder. Bowen, 22, had a 3.88 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 59 K's in 55 2/3 innings at Modesto in his first minor-league season.
