Brian Johnson News

Brian Johnson  |  Ryan Weber  • RP  •  Red Sox

Ryan Weber, Brian Johnson Have Become Rotation Candidates

Boston Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said that pitchers Ryan Weber and Brian Johnson are rotation candidates to join Eduardo Rodriguez, Nathan Eovaldi and Martin Perez now that Chris Sale (elbow) needs Tommy John surgery. Johnson, a lefty, has made 25 starts for the BoSox over the last three years, but he posted an ERA just above 6.00 with a weak 6.9 K/9 in 40 1/3 innings, including seven starts, in 2019. Weber has made 11 starts in his five-year career with the Braves, Mariners, Rays and Red Sox, and he had a weak 5.09 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 40 2/3 innings for Boston last year. At best, both of these pitchers will be candidate for depth in AL-only leagues if they're forced into Boston's starting rotation whenever the regular season starts.

Brian Johnson Gives Red Sox A Chance

Boston Red Sox pitcher Brian Johnson finished just 3 2/3 innings, while allowing three runs on six hits to go with four strikeouts and two walks in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Phillies. The southpaw gave up all three runs in the first inning before settling down. He needed 67 pitches in the short outing, which marked his fourth start in August. Since Chris Sale is shut down for the year, Johnson is expected to soak up a rotation spot. However, his 6.58 ERA and 2.04 WHIP in 26 2/3 innings is putrid. To top it off, his longest outing this year is 5 innings during a start back in June, so he isn't even stream-able in a solid matchup.

Brian Johnson Activated on Saturday

Boston Red Sox pitcher Brian Johnson (illness) has been activated from the 10-day injured list on Saturday. Johnson was sidelined roughly a month due to an intestinal illness. He will get the nod versus the New York Yankees in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday. He has a 6.43 ERA this season, but was solid for the Red Sox last season. He's not a reliable streaming option against the strong Yankees offense.

Nathan Eovaldi  • SP  •  Red Sox  |  Brian Johnson

Nathan Eovaldi, Brian Johnson Throw Friday

Boston Red Sox starting pitchers Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) and Brian Johnson both threw on Friday. Eovaldi threw a 27-pitch bullpen session, and his next step could be a simulated game or rehab outing. Johnson threw his second bullpen session, but the team is taking it slow with him after he was shut down with a non-baseball related medical matter. Eovaldi has been out since April and was sporting a disappointing 6.00 ERA in the four starts before his injury. However, he has plenty of strikeout upside when he's healthy and should be in consideration to be stashed in mixed leagues as he approaches his return.

Brian Johnson Goes On Injured List

Boston Red Sox pitcher Brian Johnson was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday "with a non-baseball related medical matter that was discovered during routine testing by the club's medical staff." Pitcher Hector Velazquez (back) was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move. Johnson was in the starting rotation after spending 61 games on the injured list earlier this year with elbow inflammation. The left-hander has an ugly 6.43 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 13 strikeouts in 14 innings over two starts and five relief outings this season. He has use in AL-only leagues when he's in the rotation, but there's no telling how long he'll be out this time around.

Brian Johnson A Solid Streaming Option On Tuesday

Boston Red Sox starter Brian Johnson has a nice matchup against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. The Marlins are second last in the MLB in runs scored, second last in home runs, and bottom-five in batting average. Johnson actually picked up his first win of this season against the Marlins back in April, allowing one run across six innings of work. He has been solid, if not spectacular in most of his appearances and also has the top team in the league backing him up. He is in a strong position to pick up a win and should have decent ratios in the process. Johnson is also poised to take on the Chicago White Sox later in the week which is another favorable matchup for the lefty. He could be a serviceable streaming option this week for those managers in deeper leagues.

Brian Johnson Placed On DL With Hip Inflammation

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brian Johnson landed on the disabled list Sunday with hip inflammation. Johnson was still able to throw from 90 feet on Sunday and said he felt fine, so no one expects this to be a long term stay on the DL. Eduardo Rodriquez will start in his place for Monday's game against the Rangers.

Christian Vázquez  • C  •  Red Sox  |  Brian Johnson

Christian Vazquez; Brian Johnson Head To DL

Boston Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez (finger) and starting pitcher Brian Johnson (hip) have both been placed on the 10-day disabled list, per the Athletic's Jen McCaffrey. Vazquez has a right fifth finger fracture and Johnson has left hip inflammation. Johnson's DL move will be retroactive to July 5. Pitcher William Cuevas was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and pitcher Ryan Braiser was activated to the Major League roster. While the moves will hurt the Red Sox, none of the news is all that actionable for fantasy players, as neither player has been great this season.

Brian Johnson Effective in Thursday's Start

The Boston Red Sox got all they could ask for from lefty Brian Johnson on Thursday. He went four innings, giving up a single run on three hits while striking out two. Johnson was forced into a starting role for the second time this season after an injury to Steven Wright earlier in the week. It is not clear whether or not Johnson will be a fixture in the Red Sox rotation for the near future, but he was solid enough for those brave souls who picked him up for a spot start. He still lacks relevancy in any fantasy format aside from the occasional plug and play.

Brian Johnson Named Thursday's Starter

The Boston Red Sox have turned to lefty Brian Johnson in lieu of the recent injury to knuckleballer Steven Wright. Johnson will make his second start of the season on Thursday against the Los Angeles Angels. Johnson has pitched in a relief role for the majority of the season, which has seen him garner a 1-2 record along with a 4.50 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 36 innings. Although the Angels have not hit lefties particularly well this year, there are better streaming options on Thursday's slate. Johnson should not be in fantasy consideration.
