Chicago Cubs catcher Chris Gimenez is starting at catcher over Willson Contreras and is hitting seventh on Monday. The Cubs had a night game at home Sunday and now play a day game in Pittsburgh Monday, so this is just a normal rest day for Contreras. With the pitcher spot hitting right behind him at eighth and a career slash line of .218/.309/.345, Gimenez is just a punt play in DFS. Contreras should return to the lineup Tuesday.
Victor Caratini Beats Out Chris Gimenez As Cubs Backup Catcher
The Chicago Cubs have named Victor Caratini the teams backup catcher. He has beat out veteran Chris Gimenez. Its a bit of a surprise as Gimenez has experience with the Cubs big free-agent signee Yu Darvish. Caratini hit .243 this spring, but it was enough to earn him the backup spot behind starting catcher Willson Contreras. Aside from daily leagues, Caratini can be avoided.
Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports that free-agent catcher Chris Gimenez has agreed to a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs. Gimenez, 35, hit .220 with seven home runs last season for the Twins. Willson Contreras has a firm grip as the Cubs starting catcher, but Gimenez should have a good chance to earn the backup spot, where he will compete against Victor Caratini. Aside from daily leagues, Gimenez holds minimum value and should be left on the waiver wire.
