Victor Caratini Signs Two-Year Deal With Twins

The Minnesota Twins have agreed to a deal with free-agent catcher Victor Caratini on Friday. They've agreed on a two-year, $14 million deal, according to Robert Murray. At first glance, this seems like an odd fit given the Twins already have Ryan Jeffers. There's still a scenario that the rebuilding Twins trade Jeffers and use Caratini as the starting catcher. The 32-year-old has posted back-to-back strong campaigns with the Houston Astros. Last season, Caratini slashed .259/.324/.404 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI across 114 games. It seems unlikely that Caratini would play over 100 games in Minnesota, assuming Jeffers remains in the picture. His fantasy value will be dependent on his playing time, but Caratini isn't likely to be a strong fantasy option anyway.

Victor Caratini Could be an Option for Phillies

Free agent catcher Victor Caratini could be an option for the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Ken Rosenthal and Matt Gelb of The Athletic. The Phillies are currently in discussions to re-sign long-time backup J.T. Realmuto, but if they are unable to reach an agreement, they could look to sign Caratini. Last season, Caratini appeared in 114 games for the Houston Astros and posted a .259/.324/.404 line with 14 doubles, 12 home runs, and one stolen base. Under the hood, he placed in the 59th percentile in xwOBA and xBA. Rosenthal and Gelb noted that if Caratini were to sign with the Phillies, he would likely operate in a timeshare with Rafael Marchan, which would likely limit both of their fantasy values. Caratini projects to be a serviceable low-end C2 in two-catcher leagues in 2026.

Victor Caratini Could Return Wednesday

Houston Astros catcher/first baseman Victor Caratini (concussion) was able to get in some running and throwing drills on Monday, and he could be activated on Wednesday, according to manager Joe Espada. Caratini was placed on the seven-day injured list on August 27 after taking a couple of foul balls off his mask, but it looks like he'll only need the minimum time on the sideline. Caratini is hitting .262 in his 95 games this season for Houston with 11 homers and 43 RBI. He has already matched his career high in homers and tied it in RBI in one of his best offensive seasons in the majors. The switch-hitter will likely be back in the mix at catcher and first base later this week, sharing time with Yainer Diaz and Christian Walker.

Victor Caratini in the Concussion Protocol

Houston Astros catcher Victor Caratini (concussion) is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the visiting Colorado Rockies and is in the league's concussion protocol, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic. With Yainer Diaz (hand) also missing another day due to an injury, the Astros called up backstop Cesar Salazar, who will make the start and catch left-hander Framber Valdez on Wednesday. It's possible that Caratini will land on the seven-day concussion injured list, which would mean Salazar would stay around for at least a week to serve as Diaz's backup. The 32-year-old suffered a concussion after recently taking a few foul balls off his mask. The veteran switch-hitter has been a nice complement to Diaz for the Astros this year and has matched his career-high total of 11 homers while batting .262 (78-for-298) across 95 games. UPDATE: Caratini was placed on the seven-day concussion IL.

Victor Caratini Starts Rehab Assignment

Houston Astros catcher Victor Caratini (hip) has been sent out on a minor-league rehab assignment with the rookie-level Florida Complex League Astros. Caratini has been sidelined since June 20 with a left hip-flexor strain. It's unclear if Caratini will only need a few rehab games in the Florida Complex League this week or if he'll eventually move his rehab assignment to a higher minor-league affiliate. Either way, the 30-year-old veteran backstop could be back with the Astros' big-league squad early in the second half of the season after this week's All-Star break. When healthy, he'll return to being a backup catching option for Yainer Diaz, leaving him very little fantasy appeal. In his first 105 at-bats in 2024, Caratini hit .248/.287/.429 with four home runs, 17 RBI and 13 runs scored in 39 games in his first year with the team.

Victor Caratini Starts Running And Throwing

Houston Astros catcher Victor Caratini (hip) started running and throwing while rehabbing in Houston, manager Joe Espada said on Sunday. Caratini is set to join the team during its series in Minnesota on July 5-7, when he'll continue his rehab, a step that could include batting practice on the field. The veteran backstop suffered a left-hip flexor strain sliding into home plate on June 20 in Chicago and was facing around a four-week recovery period. That timetable puts his return around the All-Star break, but likely after. The 30-year-old was slashing .248/.287/.429 with four home runs and 17 RBI in 115 plate appearances this year before getting hurt. As long as starting catcher Yainer Diaz remains healthy for the Astros, Caratini will be an afterthought in most fantasy leagues.

Victor Caratini Could Land On Injured List

Houston Astros catcher Victor Caratini (quadriceps) is getting his left-quadriceps injury looked at by team doctors on Thursday. Manager Joe Espada said Caratini was "pretty sore" on Thursday morning and termed it a potential injured-list situation, but the Astros will wait on the test results before making a decision on their backup catcher. Caratini was pulled from Wednesday's contest against the Chicago White Sox early with the injury and could have to miss the next 10 days. If Caratini is forced to miss additional time with his quad injury, Cesar Salazar and Cooper Hummel would be in line to serve in backup duties to Yainer Diaz. Caratini is not much of a fantasy option, even in two-catcher leagues, with limited playing time and a .248/.287/.429 slash line with four homers in 105 at-bats this year.

Victor Caratini Hits Pinch-Hit, Walk-Off Homer Tuesday

Houston Astros catcher Victor Caratini played the hero in Tuesday's 9-8 extra-innings win over the Guardians. Caratini came into the game to pinch-hit in the bottom of the 10th inning with the game tied, two outs, and a runner on third. He lined a fastball just over the right-center wall to end the game. The 30-year-old has hit well in limited playing time, slashing .314/.368/.571 with two HR and eight RBI in 38 plate appearances. He will likely need to get more frequent at-bats before he can provide meaningful fantasy value in deeper two-catcher leagues.

Astros Reportedly Sign Victor Caratini To Two-Year Deal

The Houston Astros reportedly signed free-agent catcher Victor Caratini to a two-year, $12 million deal Tuesday, per MLB's Theo DeRosa. The team has not confirmed the deal. The Astros needed a backup catcher to Yainer Diaz with Martin Maldonado also a free agent and will seemingly turn to the 30-year-old Caratini. Caratini served as the backup catcher for the Brewers in 2023, slashing .259/.327/.383 with seven home runs and 25 RBI in 226 plate appearances. While the lineup change will benefit Caratini, it likely will not be enough to make him fantasy-relevant except perhaps in the deepest of two-catcher leagues.

Victor Caratini Traded To Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired catcher Victor Caratini in a trade with the San Diego Padres. In exchange, the Padres received outfield prospect Korry Howell and minor league catcher Brett Sullivan. The Brewers also received cash considerations in the deal. The trade comes just a day after Brewers catcher Pedro Severino received an 80-game suspension for PED violations. Severino had been slated to be the team's backup catcher, but now Caratini will fill his role, serving as a backup to Omar Narvaez.
