Joe Ryan Named Opening Day Starter for Twins

The Minnesota Twins announced on Friday that right-hander Joe Ryan will be their Opening Day starter for next Thursday's game in Baltimore against the Orioles at Camden Yards. Ryan will get the nod after being named an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2025, when he went 13-10 for the Twins with a career-low 3.42 ERA (3.74 FIP) and 1.03 WHIP with 194 strikeouts and 39 walks in 31 appearances (30 starts) over 171 innings. He had a back injury flare up in February, but he's fine now and is ready for the start of his sixth year in the big leagues. Despite not throwing very hard compared to most other pitchers in the big leagues nowadays, Ryan gets plenty of swing and misses and has posted a 27.6% career strikeout rate in his 641 1/3 innings pitched. When healthy, he has a high fantasy floor in a pitcher-friendly ballpark in Minnesota. RotoBaller has Ryan ranked as the No. 21 fantasy starting pitcher in 2026.

Joe Ryan Won't Pitch in the World Baseball Classic

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan will not pitch in the World Baseball Classic, a club official told MLB.com's Matthew Leach. The decision is not injury-related. Rather, the move reflects the fact that the USA coaching staff wasn't planning to use him as a starter, and they preferred a reliever to give them short-length relief outings. Leach explains that the decision was "probably not quite as black and white" as simply rostering a reliever over a starter, but that fans should rest assured Ryan is healthy and the team would have supported his choice to pitch in the WBC. Returning to Twins camp should give him the opportunity to make one or two more starts before Opening Day. He remains the #21 starter in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings for 2026.

Joe Ryan to Join Team USA in World Baseball Classic

Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan will join Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, replacing future Hall of Fame left-hander Clayton Kershaw, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. Ryan was scratched ahead of his first scheduled Grapefruit League start on Feb. 21 with back tightness, but he has since recovered and thrown three shutout innings with two walks and no strikeouts in his lone spring training outing to this point. Now that he's recovered from his back injury, he'll be available to USA for the quarterfinals of the WBC against Canada. The 29-year-old was a first-time All-Star in 2025 in his fifth year in the big leagues, going 13-10 with a career-best 3.42 ERA (3.74 FIP), 1.03 WHIP, and 194:39 K: BB in 171 innings over 31 outings (30 starts). The injury bug has been one of Ryan's biggest issues, like so many other pitches, but when healthy, he's a solid low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 fantasy starting pitcher.

Joe Ryan Plays Catch from 90 Feet

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan (back) was able to play catch from 90 feet on Tuesday, according to Matthew Leach of MLB.com. The right-hander underwent an MRI over the weekend after feeling soreness in his lower back. However, it appears Ryan is not facing a serious injury, as he has already resumed baseball activities. Managers should keep an eye on his status, as he may be cleared to return to the mound in the coming days. Last season, Ryan logged a career-high 171 innings to the tune of a 3.42 ERA with a stellar 1.04 WHIP. He struck out 194 hitters while posting an elite 5.7% walk rate, which placed him within the 87th percentile among qualified pitchers. The 29-year-old remains a top target when looking to improve your WHIP ratio, given his stellar command. He carries solid SP2 upside in all formats in 2026.

Joe Ryan is Dealing with Back Inflammation

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan (back) appears to have avoided a significant injury after being scratched ahead of his scheduled start on Saturday. An MRI has revealed that Ryan is dealing with back inflammation, which seems like a minor issue. There is no word on when Ryan will be able to take the mound again. The assumption is that Ryan is day-to-day and should be back to throwing off the mound soon. This is overall good news for the Twins who have already lost Pablo Lopez (elbow) for the entire season due to Tommy John surgery. They'll need to lean on Ryan as the ace of the rotation after posting a stellar campaign in 2025. If healthy, Ryan should be viewed as a top-20 starting pitcher heading into the regular season.

Joe Ryan Scratched From Grapefruit League Start With Back Tightness

The Minnesota Twins announced that right-hander Joe Ryan (back) was scratched from his start in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Boston Red Sox due to lower-back tightness on his right side, according to Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic. We'll have a better idea of the severity of Ryan's back injury in a day or two, but hopefully it's nothing serious enough to put him on the injured list to start the 2026 season, especially after the Twins already lost ace Pablo Lopez (elbow) for the season due to Tommy John surgery. The 29-year-old finally stayed healthy through the 2025 season and made 30 starts, going 13-10 with a career-best 3.42 ERA (3.74 FIP), 1.03 WHIP, and a 194:39 K:BB in a career-high 171 innings pitched. Despite not lighting up the radar gun, Ryan induces plenty of whiffs and has excellent control. As long as his back injury doesn't jeopardize the start of his 2026 season, Ryan should be viewed as a top-20 fantasy starting pitcher.

Joe Ryan Avoids Arbitration, Agrees to One-Year Deal With Twins

The Minnesota Twins and right-hander Joe Ryan avoided salary arbitration on Monday by agreeing to a one-year, $6.1 million deal that includes a mutual option for the 2027 season, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Ryan will earn $6.1 million in 2026. His 2027 option will be worth $13 million with a $100,000 buyout. Ryan had filed for $6.35 million in arbitration, with the Twins countering at $5.85 million. The 29-year-old is likely to open the 2026 regular season in Minnesota, but that doesn't mean the Twins won't consider dangling him during this summer's trade deadline. Ryan was a first-time All-Star in 2025 in his fifth year in the big leagues with the Twins, going 13-10 with a career-best 3.42 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 194:39 K:BB in 171 innings over 30 starts. Despite below-average velocity, Ryan excels via deception and is fantasy relevant in all leagues with a strong strikeout rate and excellent control. His weakness is that he's a fly-ball pitcher, but that is mitigated at pitcher-friendly Target Field.

Twins Not Planning to Trade Joe Ryan, Byron Buxton

The Minnesota Twins do not expect to move center fielder Byron Buxton or right-handers Joe Ryan or Pablo Lopez this offseason, league sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Rosenthal adds that the Twins' goal is to keep those three players, build around them, and compete in 2026. Minnesota tore down its roster in July and faces an uncertain future as they look to pay down $425 million in debt. Finances will likely continue to be an issue for the Twins, but they don't want to alienate their fan base by trading players lIke Buxton and Ryan. The 32-year-old Buxton has three years and $45 million left on his contract with a full no-trade clause that extends through next year. Ryan, 29, is projected to earn $5.8 million in the next-to-last year of arbitration. Lopez, 29, has two years and $43 million left on his contract. After trading away most of their bullpen in the summer, the Twins could desperately use some additions to their relief corps.

Joe Ryan, Pablo Lopez on the Trade Block?

The rebuilding Minnesota Twins have two of the best trade chips in right-handed starting pitchers Joe Ryan and Pablo Lopez, and could continue their aggressive rebuild by trading them away this offseason, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. Lopez is under team control for two more years at $21.5 million per year, while Ryan has two years of club control and is salary-arbitration eligible after making $3 million in 2025. Ryan, 29, ended his season by giving up five or more runs in four of his last seven outings, but overall, he had a career-best 3.47 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 194:39 K:BB over his 171 innings in his fifth big-league season. Ryan was an All-Star for the first time in his career. Lopez, meanwhile, had an injury-plagued campaign, missing two months early in the year with a Grade 2 teres major strain before being shut down with a right-forearm strain in late September. The 29-year-old is already considered fully healthy, though, and should be a full-go in spring training.

Twins Expected to Keep Joe Ryan

The Minnesota Twins will listen to offers, but are expected to keep starter Joe Ryan, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Ryan has been exceptional for the Twins in 2025, being the anchor for their struggling rotation with Pablo Lopez (shoulder) getting injured on June 3 and Bailey Ober (hip) struggling to the tune of a 5.28 ERA. Ryan has been the answer to weathering the storm, with his 2.63 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and 132/23 K/BB in 116.1 innings pitched. With the Detroit Tigers running away with the AL Central, the Twins (11.5 games back) have become potential sellers at the deadline, with Ryan being the main headline. It appears that the Twins will entertain calls, but unless they get an offer that blows them away, it seems that Ryan will stay in Minnesota for the time being. Although the AL Central looks out of reach, the Twins are five games behind in the Wild Card race.
