Joe Ryan Feeling Better, Will Start Against Dodgers on Wednesday

Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (illness) is feeling better on Tuesday and will start on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers and right-hander Shohei Ohtani, according to Dan Hayes of The Athletic. Left-handed rookie Connor Prielipp had been scheduled to toe the rubber on Wednesday, but with Ryan back, he'll be moved back to Friday in a much better matchup at home against the Colorado Rockies. Ryan, 30, was scratched from his scheduled start at Target Field on Tuesday against the Dodgers, but he'll end up only being moved back a day and will still get a very challenging matchup with the first-place ballclub. After making his first All-Star squad in 2025, Ryan has been a must-start in fantasy in 2026, going 5-3 with a career-best 2.99 ERA (2.81 FIP) and 0.99 WHIP with 99 strikeouts and only 18 walks in 87 1/3 innings across his 16 starts. Ryan has only allowed more than three earned runs in an outing in just three of his 16 starts, and he's fanned at least seven in six of his last seven starts.

Joe Ryan Scratched From his Start on Tuesday With Illness

Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (illness) has been scratched from his start on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to an illness, according to Aaron Gleeman. Left-hander Kendry Rojas will make the start on Tuesday in place of Ryan in what will likely be a bullpen game. It's unclear whether Ryan will be pushed back to the team's series finale at Target Field on Wednesday against the Dodgers or if he'll be ready to pitch later this week against the Colorado Rockies. The 30-year-old has been a must-start for fantasy managers in 2026 in his sixth year in the big leagues, as Ryan has gone 5-3 with a career-low 2.99 ERA (2.81 FIP) and 0.99 WHIP with 99 strikeouts and only 18 walks in 87 1/3 innings across 16 starts. He has at least seven strikeouts in five of his last six outings, and he's allowed eight earned runs while walking four and striking out 29 in 23 innings in his four starts in June. Whenever Ryan toes the rubber again, fantasy managers should be putting him back in their starting lineups.

Joe Ryan Listed as Scheduled Starter for Saturday Against Cleveland

Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (elbow) is officially listed as the team's scheduled starter for Saturday's game in Cleveland against the division-rival Guardians, according to Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic. The Twins pulled Ryan from his last outing against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday after just nine pitches with soreness in his right elbow. Thankfully, an MRI exam ruled out any structural damage for the 29-year-old, and he's been cleared to make his next start this weekend in a plus matchup against a Guardians team that ranks 22nd in OPS (.693). Despite the plus matchup, Ryan will be extra risky for fantasy managers and could be on a shorter leash on Saturday after throwing only nine pitches his last time out. The former seventh-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018 out of Cal State Stanislaus has gone 2-3 this year for the Twins with a 3.72 ERA (3.01 FIP), 1.06 WHIP, and 40:10 K:BB in 38 2/3 innings across his eight starts.

Joe Ryan Exits Early From Start on Sunday Due to Elbow Soreness

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan (elbow) was forced to exit early from his start on Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays due to elbow soreness, per Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Ryan faced just two batters before being removed from the game, recording a walk and a strikeout. While the exact nature of Ryan's injury is not yet clear, any elbow issue for a pitcher is obviously a major cause for concern. Entering play on Sunday, Ryan had posted a 2-3 record with a 3.76 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts across 38 1/3 innings (seven starts). Any absence for Ryan would be a significant blow for both fantasy managers and the Twins. Should Ryan miss time, Minnesota right-hander Zebby Matthews could be in line for a promotion from Triple-A to the big league rotation.

Joe Ryan Named Opening Day Starter for Twins

The Minnesota Twins announced on Friday that right-hander Joe Ryan will be their Opening Day starter for next Thursday's game in Baltimore against the Orioles at Camden Yards. Ryan will get the nod after being named an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2025, when he went 13-10 for the Twins with a career-low 3.42 ERA (3.74 FIP) and 1.03 WHIP with 194 strikeouts and 39 walks in 31 appearances (30 starts) over 171 innings. He had a back injury flare up in February, but he's fine now and is ready for the start of his sixth year in the big leagues. Despite not throwing very hard compared to most other pitchers in the big leagues nowadays, Ryan gets plenty of swing and misses and has posted a 27.6% career strikeout rate in his 641 1/3 innings pitched. When healthy, he has a high fantasy floor in a pitcher-friendly ballpark in Minnesota. RotoBaller has Ryan ranked as the No. 21 fantasy starting pitcher in 2026.

Joe Ryan Won't Pitch in the World Baseball Classic

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan will not pitch in the World Baseball Classic, a club official told MLB.com's Matthew Leach. The decision is not injury-related. Rather, the move reflects the fact that the USA coaching staff wasn't planning to use him as a starter, and they preferred a reliever to give them short-length relief outings. Leach explains that the decision was "probably not quite as black and white" as simply rostering a reliever over a starter, but that fans should rest assured Ryan is healthy and the team would have supported his choice to pitch in the WBC. Returning to Twins camp should give him the opportunity to make one or two more starts before Opening Day. He remains the #21 starter in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings for 2026.

Joe Ryan to Join Team USA in World Baseball Classic

Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan will join Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, replacing future Hall of Fame left-hander Clayton Kershaw, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. Ryan was scratched ahead of his first scheduled Grapefruit League start on Feb. 21 with back tightness, but he has since recovered and thrown three shutout innings with two walks and no strikeouts in his lone spring training outing to this point. Now that he's recovered from his back injury, he'll be available to USA for the quarterfinals of the WBC against Canada. The 29-year-old was a first-time All-Star in 2025 in his fifth year in the big leagues, going 13-10 with a career-best 3.42 ERA (3.74 FIP), 1.03 WHIP, and 194:39 K: BB in 171 innings over 31 outings (30 starts). The injury bug has been one of Ryan's biggest issues, like so many other pitches, but when healthy, he's a solid low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 fantasy starting pitcher.

Joe Ryan Plays Catch from 90 Feet

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan (back) was able to play catch from 90 feet on Tuesday, according to Matthew Leach of MLB.com. The right-hander underwent an MRI over the weekend after feeling soreness in his lower back. However, it appears Ryan is not facing a serious injury, as he has already resumed baseball activities. Managers should keep an eye on his status, as he may be cleared to return to the mound in the coming days. Last season, Ryan logged a career-high 171 innings to the tune of a 3.42 ERA with a stellar 1.04 WHIP. He struck out 194 hitters while posting an elite 5.7% walk rate, which placed him within the 87th percentile among qualified pitchers. The 29-year-old remains a top target when looking to improve your WHIP ratio, given his stellar command. He carries solid SP2 upside in all formats in 2026.

Joe Ryan is Dealing with Back Inflammation

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan (back) appears to have avoided a significant injury after being scratched ahead of his scheduled start on Saturday. An MRI has revealed that Ryan is dealing with back inflammation, which seems like a minor issue. There is no word on when Ryan will be able to take the mound again. The assumption is that Ryan is day-to-day and should be back to throwing off the mound soon. This is overall good news for the Twins who have already lost Pablo Lopez (elbow) for the entire season due to Tommy John surgery. They'll need to lean on Ryan as the ace of the rotation after posting a stellar campaign in 2025. If healthy, Ryan should be viewed as a top-20 starting pitcher heading into the regular season.

Joe Ryan Scratched From Grapefruit League Start With Back Tightness

The Minnesota Twins announced that right-hander Joe Ryan (back) was scratched from his start in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Boston Red Sox due to lower-back tightness on his right side, according to Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic. We'll have a better idea of the severity of Ryan's back injury in a day or two, but hopefully it's nothing serious enough to put him on the injured list to start the 2026 season, especially after the Twins already lost ace Pablo Lopez (elbow) for the season due to Tommy John surgery. The 29-year-old finally stayed healthy through the 2025 season and made 30 starts, going 13-10 with a career-best 3.42 ERA (3.74 FIP), 1.03 WHIP, and a 194:39 K:BB in a career-high 171 innings pitched. Despite not lighting up the radar gun, Ryan induces plenty of whiffs and has excellent control. As long as his back injury doesn't jeopardize the start of his 2026 season, Ryan should be viewed as a top-20 fantasy starting pitcher.
