Bailey Ober's Velocity Continues to Tumble

Minnesota Twins right-hander Bailey Ober's average fastball velocity was down even more in his Grapefruit League start on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic. Ober averaged 89.9 mph in his first spring training start, then 88.8 mph in his second start, and now he's down to 88.2 mph. None of the 58 pitches that Ober threw on Tuesday cracked 90 mph, and he also failed to record a strikeout and generated just three swings and misses. The 30-year-old veteran only has three strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings pitched so far this spring, and his low velocity is a concerning trend that fantasy managers must pay attention to. In 2025, Ober barely averaged over 90 mph on his fastball and career-worst 5.10 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with 120 strikeouts and 31 walks in 146 1/3 innings over 27 starts. Ober missed some time with a hip injury in the second half, which could have contributed to him falling apart after a decent start. He's trending down ahead of the 2026 season and is currently ranked as RotoBaller's No. 97 starting pitcher in fantasy.

Bailey Ober Focusing on Mechanics in Camp

Minnesota Twins right-hander Bailey Ober was bothered by a hip injury last spring, and it lingered all season long, leading to "compromised mechanics, decreased velocity, and a career-worst 5.10 ERA in 146 1/3 innings." Ober has yet to appear in a Grapefruit League game in spring training, instead "ramping up with live bullpen sessions," according to Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic. "Physically, I'm feeling good," Ober said. "I'm throwing more bullpens this year, just making sure everything mechanically is lined up." The 30-year-old veteran also worked with a hip specialist in the offseason and is hoping to bounce back for the Twins in 2026. Before he battled injuries last year, Ober had three straight seasons with a sub-4.00 ERA, and he also had a career-high 191 punchouts in 178 2/3 innings over 31 starts in 2024. With better health and increased velocity, Ober could return to form and be a great value pick late in fantasy baseball drafts.

Can Bailey Ober Rebound After His Disastrous 2025?

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Bailey Ober had a season to forget in 2025. Across 146 1/3 innings (27 starts), the 30-year-old posted a 6-9 record with a 5.10 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 120 strikeouts. Ober's strikeout rate plummeted from 26.9% in 2024 to 19.2% in 2025, and he allowed a whopping 1.85 HR/9. On the plus side, Ober's control continues to be a major asset. He allowed just a 5% walk rate in 2025 and owns a career walk rate of 5.3%. If Ober can push back up closer to his 24% career strikeout rate in 2026, he could be in line for a bounce-back season. Coming into 2025, Ober had posted two straight 140-plus inning seasons with a WHIP of 1.07 or lower, so he has the potential to be a real asset in the category for fantasy managers. Ober should also hold a secure spot in the Minnesota rotation, particularly after the Twins lost starter Pablo Lopez (elbow) to Tommy John surgery earlier this month. With a current average draft position of pick 296, Ober may end up being a value selection for fantasy managers in 2026.

Bailey Ober Activated and Starting Against Guardians

Minnesota Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (hip) was activated from the 15-day injured list on Saturday and will make the start for Game 2 of the series in Cleveland against the division-rival Guardians at Progressive Field. Ober is returning for the first time since July 2 due to a left-hip impingement. The 30-year-old won't be a recommended streaming option in his return since he's been too inconsistent in 2025 with a 4-6 record, 5.28 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and only 74 strikeouts in 92 innings over his 17 starts. In his final minor-league rehab start, Ober got up to 65 pitches and five innings, so he should be pretty stretched out for Saturday's appearance. The matchup against Cleveland is a nice one, though, as they rank 27th in baseball with a .676 OPS. Ober has been good against the Guards this year, too, with a 1.69 ERA and five strikeouts in his two starts against them.

Bailey Ober Expected to Make Next Start in Majors

Minnesota Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (hip) is expected to make his next start in the majors. The Twins haven't chosen a date yet, but it could come during the team's upcoming series against the Boston Red Sox or Cleveland Guardians. Ober, on the 15-day injured list with a left-hip impingement since June 29, has been rehabbing in the minors. He made a start for Triple-A St. Paul on Friday and coasted through five innings of one-run, two-hit ball with six strikeouts and one walk. While Ober was an effective starter for the Twins from 2021-24, this season has been a different story. Across 17 starts and 92 innings, the 6-foot-9 hurler has struggled to a 5.28 ERA with a 1.41 WHIP, 74:22 K:BB, and a paltry 28.7% groundball rate. The wheels came off over five June starts, during which Ober combined to surrender 30 earned runs on 38 hits over 30 frames. The 30-year-old will attempt to turn around his fortunes when the team reinstates him during the upcoming week.

Bailey Ober to Make Rehab Start on Friday

Minnesota Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (hip) will start his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, according to The Athletic's Dan Hayes. Depending on how Ober feels and looks on Friday, it might be the only rehab start he needs before being activated from the 15-day injured list. The 30-year-old was shut down in early July with a left-hip impingement. The 30-year-old hasn't been much of a fantasy asset in 2025, though, going 4-6 for the Twins with a career-worst 5.28 ERA (5.29 FIP), 1.41 WHIP and 74:22 K:BB in 92 innings over his 17 starts. Ober endured a particularly rough month of June before going on the IL, allowing 30 earned runs on 38 hits (14 home runs surrendered) while striking out 24 and walking eight in 30 innings over five starts. Fantasy managers won't be in a rush to pluck him off the waiver wire when he returns in the second half.

Bailey Ober Continues to Throw Bullpens

Minnesota Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (hip) has been able to throw multiple bullpen sessions since landing on the injured list July 2, MLB.com reports. Following his start on June 28 against the Detroit Tigers, Ober landed on the injured list with a hip injury. He proceeded to take an anti-inflammatory medicine, and since then, his hip has felt better. He threw a bullpen session Wednesday and has now thrown a handful of times off a mound as he works to get his mechanics back in order. Ober has struggled mightily this season, with a 5.28 ERA in 92 innings pitched. Fantasy managers had high hopes for Ober coming into the season, because he was coming off two solid seasons with the Twins, where he owned a 3.43 and 3.98 ERA in 2023 and 2024, respectively. His struggles this season have resulted in a worse K/9, higher HR/9, and higher opponents' batting average on balls in play (BABIP). The silver lining is that it appears his injury will not sideline him for long. Still, fantasy managers will want to see him have a good outing or two before confidently deploying him into their starting lineups again.

Bailey Ober Throws a Successful Bullpen Session

Minnesota Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (hip) threw a successful bullpen session on Wednesday. This happened days after he had anti-inflammatory medicine to help ease the pain from the impingement in his left hip. He will continue to do this while attempting to get his mechanics back in order. Entering the season, it was believed that the right-hander would take a big step forward in his production. Instead, he has struggled from the get-go, posting a 5.28 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and 74 strikeouts over 92 innings. However, there is some belief that his regression is related to this ongoing hip injury. Ober is worth stashing in leagues with IL spots, with the hope that a healthier version of him can return for the second half.

Bailey Ober Continues to Throw While Sidelined

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Bailey Ober (hip) continues to throw in order to maintain arm strength as he works his way back from a left-hip impingement that put him on the shelf on June 29. He dealt with the issue for most of the season, which could help explain some of the ineffectiveness that pushed him to a 5.28 ERA, 1.41 ERA, and a 12.8 percent K-BB% -- all career worsts. The 29-year-old is expected to ramp up his activity next week and could make a return to the rotation in late July. With fellow pitchers Pablo Lopez and Zebby Matthews on the shelf as well, the Twins will welcome his return, although fantasy managers might want to take a more cautious approach and see him have some success before throwing the righty back into their lineups.

Twins Placing Bailey Ober on 15-Day Injured List With Hip Impingement

The Minnesota Twins are placing right-hander Bailey Ober (hip) on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with a left-hip impingement and recalling left-hander Kody Funderburk from Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move, according to Minneapolis Star Tribune's Phil Miller. It's unclear who will take Ober's start on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays. The hip injury could help explain why Ober has coughed up seven runs in three of is last four starts to raise his season ERA to 5.28 and his WHIP to 1.41 in 92 innings over his 17 starts for the Twins. The 29-year-old hasn't been of much help in fantasy with only 74 punchouts and a 4-6 record. Given his struggles in 2025, the Twins probably won't be in a rush to bring him back to the rotation in the second half of the season until they're sure he's 100% healthy. In addition to Ober, starters Pablo Lopez and Zebby Matthews are currently on the IL.
