Chris Herrmann Belts Slam In Historic Debut

Oakland Athletics catcher Chris Herrmann (knee) made his season debut on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins and he instantly became a fan favorite with one swing of the bat. Herrmann became the first player in franchise history to hit a grand slam in his debut with the organization, with the big homer coming off of Twins RHP Jake Odorizzi. "When you hit a home run, period, let alone a grand slam, it makes you feel like you belong pretty quickly with the team," manager Bob Melvin said. "It was nice to get him off to a good start." Herrmann will be fighting for at-bats behind Josh Phegley, and his fantasy appeal is still limited to deeper AL-only leagues despite the big fly.

Chris Herrmann Nearing Return From Injured List

Oakland Athletics catcher Chris Herrmann (knee) will need to catch consecutive games during his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas before he is activated from the 10-day injured list. He was 2-for-5 in a game Monday for Vegas, posting an RBI single while playing all nine innings behind the plate. He did not play in Tuesday's game. With Nick Hundley (knee) recovering from knee surgery with the big club, Herrmann could return and see occasional starts.

Chris Herrmann To Begin Rehab Stint On Thursday

Oakland Athletics catcher Chris Herrmann (knee) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday, manager Bob Melvin said. He will play five innings in the first game action back after right knee surgery. Once he is healthy he will force the A's into a tough situation, as they already have catcher Josh Phegley playing well and they have been happy with Nick Hundley, too. Even when Herrmann is able to return, avoid him for fantasy purposes until the murky catcher situation in Oakland becomes more clear.

Chris Herrmann Starting To Make Progress

Oakland Athletics catcher Chris Herrmann (knee) was able to do some running drills on Monday, as he continues to make progress in his recovery from a knee injury. Herrmann has also resumed taking batting practice, too. Josh Phegley has seized the No. 1 catcher job in Oakland while putting up All-Star caliber numbers, and beat writer Susan Slusser feels the organization is pleased with Nick Hundley. It's hard to see the team keeping three catchers on the active roster, so it's uncertain where Herrmann will fit in once he is healthy.

Juan Nicasio, Chris Herrmann Activated From Disabled List Monday

Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Juan Nicasio (knee) and catcher Chris Hermann (oblique) were activated from the disabled list on Monday. In a corresponding move, the Mariners sent pitcher Rob Whalen and catcher David Freitas down to Triple-A Tacoma. Herrmann will take his place as Mike Zuninos primary backup, but fantasy value may eventually lie with Nicasio in deeper leagues. His ERA stands at an ugly 5.34, but the reliever does own an outstanding 37/2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 28 2/3 innings pitched. That said, he should be left on the waiver until he proves himself a reliable option in the Mariners bullpen.

Chris Herrmann Placed on the 10-Day DL

Seattle Mariners catcher Chris Herrmann has been placed on the disabled list due to a strained right oblique. David Freitas has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to replace Herrmann. Herrmann has only appeared in one game this campaign and has not played in more than 106 games in a season for his career. He should not be owned in any fantasy formats.

Chris Herrmann Released From Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks have released catcher Chris Herrmann from the roster. Herrmann was in a platoon with Jeff Mathis last season, hitting 10 home runs with 27 RBI in 256 plate appearances. With the signing of Alex Avila, there was no need for the D'Backs to hold a third catcher on the roster. Herrmann does not hit or defend well enough to sign with another team and win a starting job. Barring injury, don't expect Herrmann to sign on for a starting job in the majors this season.

Chris Herrmann Avoids Arbitration

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher/outfielder Chris Herrmann avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.3 million contract. Herrmann was eligible for arbitration for the second time. The 30-year-old hit just .181/.273/.345 last season and isn't much of a fantasy option for 2018.

Chris Herrmann Sitting In Favor Of Jeff Mathis

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Chris Herrmann was pulled from yesterday's game in the eighth inning, and Jeff Mathis will start against the Padres and bat eighth tonight. Herrmann left yesterday's game with right hand soreness, finishing 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored and was replaced by catcher Chris Iannetta, who struck out in his only at-bat. Either Iannetta or Mathis would be the recipient of more playing time if Herrmann were to miss time, and the 29-year-old Herrmann has a .241 OPS over the last 14 days. Iannetta would be the most attractive option for fantasy owners, as he has a .795 OPS this season and has three home runs in the last 14 days. Mathis only has a .502 OPS this season and would only be used in the deepest of leagues.
