Daniel Ponce De Leon Released By Mariners

The Seattle Mariners have released right-handed pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon from his minor league contract. He is now a free agent. The 30-year-old signed with the team this past April and he struggled immensely during his time in the high minors. Pitching at Triple-A, he had a 7.95 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP across 16 starts. Ponce de Leon spent his first four MLB seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals before the team released him in 2021. Over 57 games (22 starts) with St. Louis, he had a 4.33 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP while averaging 9.3 K/9.

Angels Sign Daniel Ponce de Leon

The Los Angeles Angels signed right-handed pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon to a minor league deal on Monday, per the team's official transaction log. Ponce de Leon has spent his entire Major League career to this point with the St. Louis Cardinals, pitching to a 4.33 ERA, a 4.83 FIP, 152 strikeouts, and 81 walks in 147.2-lifetime innings. In 33.1 innings last season, the right-hander posted a 6.21 ERA and a 6.11 FIP while also registering 24 strikeouts, 22 walks, and a pair of saves. With 22 of his 57 career appearances coming as a starter, Ponce de Leon could provide the Angels with some additional depth in either the rotation or the bullpen. Los Angeles' current rotation options include Shohei Ohtani, Noah Syndergaard, Patrick Sandoval, Jose Suarez, Michael Lorenzen, Reid Detmers, and Jaime Barria.

Daniel Ponce de Leon Placed On Injured List

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Daniel Ponce de Leon (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with right shoulder discomfort. Right-hander Seth Elledge was recalled from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. Ponce de Leon left his outing against the Detroit Tigers early on Tuesday with the shoulder discomfort. The 29-year-old has been well off the fantasy radar this year. He started in his first two outings of the year, but since then he has made 15 relief appearances. Overall, Ponce de Leon is sporting an ugly 7.03 ERA and 1.64 WHIP while striking out 17 and walking 13 in 24 1/3 innings pitched. He does have two saves on his ledger this year, but he should continue to go ignored in all formats. It doesn't sound like his injury is serious, but the Cardinals will give him some time to rest up and figure some things out.

Daniel Ponce de Leon Exits Tuesday’s Game Early

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon was removed from Tuesday's game against the Tigers with shoulder discomfort. He allowed one run on one hit across 1/3 of an inning before exiting. The severity of his injury is unknown at this time and the 29-year-old is considered day-to-day. Ponce de Leon has struggled this season, owning a 7.03 ERA, 1.64 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts across 24 1/3 innings. The Cardinals right-hander missed three weeks in May with a shoulder issue. Fantasy managers can move on from Ponce de Leon if they haven't already.

Daniel Ponce de Leon Gets Shelled On Sunday

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon struggled in a very short Sunday start against the Milwaukee Brewers. Ponce de Leon pitched just 1 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits and four walks. Of his 52 pitches, only 29 were strikes, as Ponce de Leon was just all over the place in this one. He was coming off an excellent start against the Marlins, but he just couldn't throw strikes in this one. He'll hope for a better result in his next start, which should come against the Phillies.

Daniel Ponce de Leon Goes Five Strong Innings On Monday

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon pitched well in his first start of the season on Monday. Taking on the Miami Marlins, Ponce de Leon went five innings, allowing just one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three. He threw almost all fastballs, but he kept getting the Marlins hitters to swing under the ball and induced seven fly outs to just four ground outs. That'll work well in a giant ballpark like loanDepot park, but it could lead to some ugly outings at more hitter-friendly confines. Still, it's a positive sign from Ponce de Leon, who will get the Brewers in St. Louis his next time out.

Daniel Ponce de Leon Walks Six On Thursday

St. Louis Cardinals right-handed pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon got the start in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Houston Astros. He ended up throwing 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits but walking six and only striking out three. He's put up a 4.76 ERA in spring and still has a chance to win a spot in the Cardinals starting rotation, at least a temporary one until Miles Mikolas (shoulder) returns. Still, Ponce de Leon's lack of strikeout upside and occasional bouts with bad control make him a risky fantasy play without much upside.

Johan Oviedo Enters Rotation, Daniel Ponce de Leon Optioned

The St. Louis Cardinals are elevating right-hander Johan Oviedo to the rotation on a full-time basis moving forward with righty Daniel Ponce de Leon being optioned to the clubs alternate site. Oviedo has already made two starts this season and produced a 3.60 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. He is ranked as St. Louis No. 13 prospect per MLB Pipeline and has averaged 95.4 MPH on his fastball during his early big league stint. Ponce de Leon has struggled mightily this season, having walked 14 batters in 12 frames, owning an 8.37 FIP through his first five appearances. Oviedo has DFS appeal in the short term, with Ponce de Leon having little fantasy intrigue.

Daniel Ponce de Leon Gets Just Two Outs On Friday

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon was only able to get two outs in his start against the Cleveland Indians on Friday. He ended up with 2/3 of an inning pitched, allowing four runs on two hits and four walks. Ponce de Leon threw 41 pitches, with only 17 of them going for strikes. His ERA shot up to 7.82 and his record dropped to 0-3. Ponce de Leon likely won't remain in the rotation for long, and may have already made his last start for a while.

Daniel Ponce de Leon To Start On Friday Over Flaherty

The St. Louis Cardinals will go with Daniel Ponce de Leon as their starting pitcher as they return from their break on Friday against the Chicago Cubs. The original presumption was that ace Jack Flaherty would be taking the mound on Friday, but the team wants to be extra cautious and give Flaherty an extra bullpen session prior to starting off long rest. Flaherty's next start hasn't been announced yet, but Sunday in game three against the Cubs might be a good bet.
